Big shout out to JT last night .. atta boy that was a great 2nd and 3rd period effort last night .. not sure what flipped da switch but keep it going for game 6 please .. we can't have games 1 -4 we just can't

Johnny broke "elite D" Cernak's ankles on the tying goal better than any NBA crossover ever has.

His work in the corner and behind the net here reminded me of Matts. Tavares is a very strong player. And even if he isn't super quick, he's got hands. Felt like he could keep the puck as long as he needed to behind the net there to find a play to make.

He's been playing the Danault style shutdown role for us so far in round 1. Good to see him impose his will in an offensive situation there.

I have no doubt he'll be a big reason why I get to add another W to my win-counter/status on Thursday.

I believe!

Big respect to Tavares for last game - but fact is, you can't be invisible game 1-4 being paid 11M. I think the criticism was well warranted - but boy did he show up in Game 5
I heard a stat last night that 13 of Auston's 16 career playoff goals have come at home. It's not impossible that he has a big game in game 6 but it's also fair to think that they'll need that 2nd line to step up again.

That was just such an impressive play all around. He didn't try to force anything, just weaved back and forth in the corner until Cernak lost him, which drew in the other TB defenders, leaving Rielly wide open, and then obviously a perfect pass... just so awesome.

How is JT similar to Sundin? Beside they play C and captain, both being #1 overall picks and it stops there.
Sundin came via trading Clark(Captain of the Leafs) away.
JT came via UFA and is arguably the biggest UFA signings ever.
Sundin came with the expectations of Leafs future after Dougie and his crew.
JT came with the expectations to win the Cup right away while he leads AM, MM and WN to their prime.
Sundin endured times where the Leafs were sellers at TDL and didn’t make the playoffs.
JT times at the Leafs sofar were record breaking seasons and 1st round exits.
Sundin was always by far the best player on the Leafs.
JT at best was 2nd best if not 3rd best on the Leafs.

Where are the similarities?
They produce almost identically and relative to their peer production are almost identical.

Basically two guys who are rarely going to "wow" you as best of the best but who are going to be consistent year after year. That isn't a bad thing as very few players can do that. They are to first line centre as Mike Gartner was to 30 goal seasons. Gartner finished top 10 all time for goals yet never was a "wow" guy. They are also both guys who simply aren't emotional leaders or "grab you by the seat of your pants and drag you along" types.

League wide:
Tavares, 58.18%, 6th OA
Kamph, 57.43%, 12th OA
Matthews, 56.57%, 18th OA
Spezza (the bum), 53.49%, 41st OA

Leafs, 55.5%, 1st OA

So you're the coach of the twice defending Stanley Cup Champion Tampa Bay Lightning.
In the five games your team has faced John Tavares in the faceoff dot, you've only won the draw 28.x% of the time. Tavares is leading the playoffs with 71.x%. He was barely second to Bergeron in the regular season. Largely due to that Leafs are first in faceoff win% while the Lightning are 16thin the playoffs. 56.4% to 43.6%. Convince me that is not helping the Leafs cause ...

Tavares lowly 0.80 ppg in these five games (since we're into assessing snippets of data ...) as second line center with second line wingers and ice time against the defending Cup champions would have him tied for second among Tampa Bay forwards. Tampa Bay forwards are all Gods while Tavares is a bum? Facts don't jive.

At the start of the season, both his coach and Tavares said he was taking on more of a defensive role. His offence was likely to suffer. He's playing second fiddle to Matthews. How easily we forget.

I don't think Tavares is having a great series. But I think the posts claiming "no contributions" and "no heart" are over the top.

The first 4 games were god awful by every stretch of the imagination and we needed that 2nd line to be a difference maker for us. They delivered in game 5, that play by JT was amazing, I could visualize Crosby making the exact same play down low.

People may say "meh faceoffs" but he's 13% ahead of number 2 in the league (depending what cut off you assign). That's a massive gap. Coupled with focusing on the D side and one point shy of PT/GP, he's useful. Depth wins. Hopefully he has another big game in him this week.

I'm curious how people are deciding which thread they're going to post in. They're literally side by side for me right now.

We hear coaches talk about puck possession all the time.

Tavares providing the Leafs a very lopsided advantage in puck possession (basically 70-30 -> Leafs get possession 40% more than the Lightning) after a faceoff, that has to have received significant attention & discussion among the Tampa Bay players and coaches before the series - yet they haven't been able to stop it.

Scoring usually falls in the playoffs. There are exceptions to every rule but the weaker half of the league is playing golf. It is tougher to score. The Leafs are playing an excellent hockey team who are not going to make it easier to score. Their goalie is a past Vezina & Conn Smythe winner. Their top dman is a past Norris winner (candidate again this year) and Conn Smythe winner. Stamkos with two Rocket Richard trophies is coming off his biggest point season. They've won two Cups the past two years. They have lots of good checkers and capable players. Expectations have to be set with that in mind. Tavares is scoring as well in terms of ppg as all but one forward on that team. I'd love a hat trick from him every game but it gets real in a hurry - this is a really good hockey team and our team with Tavares is beating them.

First of all, Sundin had a wow factor bc he took over games.
Secondly, JT is not close to Sundin.

They are very different players.
JT is pretty much Crosby lite with the way he plays while Sundin is a juice up version of ROR.

Where was this Tavares all series? Played like the dominant player he should be. When he starts cycling on you, you may as well forget it.

Sorry but Sundin was never a "wow" player but a consistently excellent one. Guys like Matthews and Marner are "wow" guys who will flirt with top 5 for years.

That doesn't mean he didn't have moments that made you go "wow". He's responsible for one of my favourite Leaf goals (his 500th was epic).

Over the same stretches of their careers their output versus peers is almost identical.

Over the same stretch he lead them in playoff scoring once (which to date is one more than Tavares though he's missed a chance). Interestingly, their best results over that period was the year he was injured.

Just bc JT is not similar to Sundin, it doesn’t mean JT is not a good player.

That may be fairly common because of matchups.

9 of McDavid's 13 career playoff goals have come at home.

26 of MacKinnon's 33 career playoff goals have come at home.

turns out it was last night
That's one game. Hope he keeps it up.
