Like most bold declarations, This thread was f***ing stupid.

Jt can still be put in the 1c spot if Matthews ever went down. He still does most things right. He sticks up for his team. He's fine.

He's not going to keep pace with Matthews and that's fine.

How come I never see or hear players talk about him as a captain? I never see him show emotion or be vocal. Spezza is showing more heart and leadership on his sleeve. But who knows what goes on in the dressing room right?

The question I have for John Tavares is, how bad does he want it?

Don't think it's a case of not wanting it, I think it's a case of not knowing how.

He seems like he wants to be a consistent guy but I don't know if he knows how to bring himself out of his comfort zone or find a different level.

I don't know how he has been doing since he has been with the Leafs but consistency with the Isles was never called into question by Isles fans. Overstepping the amount of time he should be on the ice at times might have been brought up but no one questioned his drive. Playing within his limitations he's a game breaker. Trying to be something he's not will just make him look silly. Would have never imagined any fanbase criticizing JT for how he played the game other than pissed off Isles fans who were upset by how he left the team.

What I've seen the last couple of games I watched and since I'm from Tampa I have a passing interest in this series was that he provides a spark to get the team going. It might not be pretty but if JT is around the net he is always a threat to score. He needs to be around that net at all times not running and gunning if doesn't have to. Grind at the corner boards but get back at the net. I can't stand Cooper's smug face BTW. That team will cheat if they are given the chance. The winning goal last year in game 7 was a player cheating off the bench and wasn't caught by the refs. I think the Isles would have had the Cup last year if it wasn't for that illegal entry.

Also was impressed by Matthews physicality. I always thought of him as somewhat a loafer didn't know he had a physical aspect to his game. That also can be a game changer in this series. Hope brings it in Tampa tomorrow. They are going to need that . The Bolts are treating tomorrow as game 7. I think the Leafs can win the series if they show no fear and show up.

Bwahahah another fail. Got us into the game and tied the game.. You on ignore!!! Bwahahah
Tavares has no business being the captain of the Leafs. No heart

That's what it takes in the post season. Draisaitl just buried a goal that went off the other teams stick. You need to be in the right place.
My point still stands and thats Tavares has no heart no jam and refuses to stick up for himself or his team. Piss poor captain. Hes a fine support player and thats it.

What happens at John’s Muskoka cottage… stays at the Tavares cottage.

Did you hear Auston yesterday?… yeah, he’s our guy.

I don't think it's either. I'm sure he wants it, and I'm sure he knows how.

It seems to be more a matter of "can't". Whether it's an injury or Covid hangover, or just mileage (some playing styles wear you down faster), he seems to be a step slower than his always not great speed.

As shown by Rielly's goal, he's still got great hands, as long as he doesn't have to do too much with his feet at the same time.

I cannot agree.

At a critical low point in this series, the guy that comes up with a game changing goal in the dirtiest area of the ice, a stick handle in a phone booth behind the net assist and leads the playoffs with winning 71.8% of his draws against the twice defending Stanley Cup champions is playing with no heart? His coach, sensing no heart in Tavares gave him the 3rd most ice time among his forwards - like he has all series and all season. Doesn't look like his coach agrees with you either. I'll bet coach Cooper would take Tavares on his Stanley Cup winning team in a heartbeat.

Come on, mods.

When he was on the Island he trained with a speed skating coach. I don't know if he's continued that practice in Toronto and might explain why he's not skating as well as you would like. That said he was never that fast.

Gotta shout out to JT as he has been god awful for 4 games .. not sure what Spezz said or did to him but for some unknown reason to me da ice stopped shifting badly against us starting in 2nd period when JT was on da ice .. it shocked me as I said to my buddy what da f*ck is happening here .. completely dominated for 4 games + 1 period and then all of a sudden JT's line is playing ok and ice is not tilting against us .. and then a few minutes later da team started taking it to Tampa .. it was very strange to me .. like da hockey gods decided Leafs were gonna have a different fate
