To be fair there have been questions about him for longer than two games. Those questions were answered with wait until the playoffs, that's where he excels. He's nowhere close to excelling.

Considering there are 96 first line spots in the NHL, and he was 39th highest scoring forward, I would say that he is producing at an above average first line rate.
One assist in two games against the two-time defending Cup champions is much too small of a sample size to even form an opinion about a lack of production.
If anything, his numbers tell us that he's overpaid.

All the suggestions of putting Marner with Tavares are just lol. For a guy with a top 5 cap hit in the league you'd figure he'd be able to generate a couple of chances on his own but alas, here we are.
Somebody mentioned earlier, JT is still good on the PP or in the slot where he is not required to skate at all. He's got great hands and a great shot, he is just a shockingly bad skater.
This offseason he needs to lose 15 pounds and get the Leaf skills coaches to do miracles on his body to get him to not lose another step.

I think the most frustrating thing about Tavares recently for me has been on the PP. our entries are usually Marner to Matthews to Tavares back to Rielly or Matthews. But there have been a few times when Tavares gets the puck, is pressured by a defender before he can makes the pass, and straight up loses the board battle.

Is there a reality where we can move him for Scheifele after this season? Don’t care what you have to add.
I just don’t understand how he can regress this much this fast. Is it from having multiple kids recently? An undisclosed injury? He’s not old, so I don’t think that’s the cause. He also sometimes has these flashes of elite play about 7-10% of the time. It’s truly baffling.
He’s essentially a liability at 5 on 5 and is only effective taking faceoffs and being infront of the net on the PP.
Good guy, but jeez this is tough to watch from a fans POV.

I feel in order for us to win the series he'll need to get a few points. Preferably at even strength, although that may be asking too much.

Absolutely and I am thinking it has to be time to give Tavares some looks with Marner. If Tarares can't get going offensively, we pretty much won't beat Tampa IMO. Time for Keefe and Dubas to decide if they want to die on the, "we are not splitting 16 and 34 up" hill.
You'd have to imagine that they could've found one over the last 3 years. Dubas can find talent in a haystack. There's so many ways we could've dispersed that 11mil. Maybe an 8mil 2nd line centre and then upgrade on Clifford and Simmonds to 2.5 mil players for example. Maybe a goalie or two. How's about trading for Devon Toews? We could've looked there.
I hate that we have to screw with other good lines just to get our 11mil captain to contribute anything.
It might be better to apologize to Nylander and Kerfoot and put them back with him.

It was the choice of Leafs management to define the terms of the contract then pull the trigger to sign him. Dubas agreed to maximum salary for maximum years with a no-trade clause for an older player already wearing out from hard use. Bizarrely, for the Matthews contract, Leafs management agree to the maximum salary but with minimum number of years until UFA for rising young star.
Dubas/Shanahan caved to savvy agents. They should be fired for these two things alone based on the damage it is now doing, and will do in the near future, to the Toronto franchise.

Imagine having someone like Danault (I know it's not that simple). But man, having an ELITE defensive center for just over half the price tag of JT that can still chip in offensively. That dude is even more valuable come playoff time. Kings lost 6-0 last night and he played 20 minutes and wasn't even a minus. He gets assigned to play against mcdavid or drais (sometimes both when they stack a line) 5 on 5 right now.

15/64,91,88 would be my second choice. Nylander is not exactly lighting it up either and neither Kerfoot or Nylander can go get the puck like a Hyman. Keefe has some big lineup decisions to make.

We deserve a first round loss if we expect a guy who is in the top 5 in the entire league among forwards in terms of salary to produce and at least look like he's capable of producing offence? The level of excuses for JT is insane. I get he's playing well defensively, so is David Kampf. He makes 9.5 million more than Kampf and does less offensively. You're being asinine.

Tavares and Stamkos have been about even in the series so far, with neither being a factor as of yet.
One should expect both players to be heard from before this series is over.

What a disaster of a signing JT turned out to be.
Without signing him we'd likely still have Kadri, because they'd really have no choice. They wouldn't have traded their #2 center. We'd likely have another top player or several other good players too.
Would be a far better team without JT. But hey, I bought into it when they signed him. I thought he was going to do great things here. He did, but only for 1 year.
He should really give up the C.

Worst captain in franchise history until he proves otherwise. A robotic Mort. He was brought in to get this team over the hump, yet his contract is a big reason why they haven’t.
He doesn’t even get the other teams top dmen or lines to go against, and still can’t do anything 5on5 other than win some face offs.
