Report Card: Moore
The latest in our post-season Blue Jackets player report cards:

John Moore

Age: 21

Position: Defense

Contract status: Signed through 2013-14

Year in review: Moore has not been brought along in an ideal manner early in his career. He’s been “fed†the pro game like a whole watermelon, but it’s a credit to the him that he’s emerged, seemingly, with his game and his psyche intact. … The Blue Jackets expected Moore to spend 2011-12 with AHL Springfield, to build off his strong finish to the previous season and sharpen his game in the defensive zone. Instead, he played more games (67) in Columbus than any other defenseman. … What you notice immediately about Moore is his mobility, his effortless and fluid skating stride. It’s a sight to behold, and he’ll one day be regarded as one of the top 10 “skating†defensemen in the league. Mark it down. … Moore had two goals, five assists and a minus-23 rating, but his plus-minus ratio was really a tale of two seasons. He was minus-3 in the first 41 games, respectable given how horrible the club was to that point. But he was minus-20 in the final 41, suggesting the gas tank was low. … There were noticeable strides made by Moore in his own zone, especially in the first half of the season. He did not get overwhelmed when pressured, and he seemed to want to carry the puck most nights. … Moore had only one point – an assists – in the final 26 games of the season. … When he left Nationwide Arena after this season, there was an understanding by Moore than he needs to continue developing his physique, to get stronger in his chest and trunk. He’s going to be a big-minute defensemen with that skating stride. … Will he ever put up big points in the NHL? Most scouts don’t think he’ll be more than a 30-40 points guy. No shame in that, of course. But his value will be realized most by those who watch him night in, night out. He should be a slightly better version of Jordan Leopold. … Two seasons ago, Moore was given a baptism by fire with AHL Springfield. He and a cluster of other young defensemen made their pro debuts without a coach on staff that had ever played defense. … Through it all, Moore remains one of the most kind, earnest and polite pro athletes imagineable.

When the Gomez trade was made, everyone assumed that Higgins was the main piece, but it turned out to be McDonagh. I wonder if instead of Brass or Door, the most valuable piece here will turn out to be Moore. Reading his scouting reports today is like reading the reports on McDonagh four years ago, very, very similar.
 
when you can skate like this kid can, you have a place in this league. i like this kids wheels. they are top notch. i like him and i liked him alot in his draft year.

i like the leopold comparison too. i made the same the other night talking with jon.

once he starts to understand his position relative to the size and speed of the nhl game, i think he can be a top 4 guy. he needs to work on his gap control and angles some, and he needs to get stronger. his defensive game is there as he thinks the game fine. he needs to develop his body more. those things can be improved on in time.

this kid is more than just a throw in. hes a potential piece that could slot in nicely pending his development. dmen with silky strides like this are worth being patient with. problem is, guys who play d and can skate like this arent always offensive wizards. he may not be paul coffee or nik lidstrom, but he can be damn good.

i think we will all come to really like his skills and appreciate his overall game.

NHL Central Scouting's Jack Barzee: "I watched John Moore as an underage player and I knew he was a must see player for this year; he hasn't disappointed me one bit. His first two strides are like Paul Coffey and he has been labeled as a world-class skater. He is poised with the puck, he gets his shots through to the net and he has gotten a lot stronger this season. He resembles (Calgary Flames) defenseman Jordan Leopold and similar to Leopold at the same age he needs to get a little bit better at playing more aggressive and more physical, but John is going to be a one-two defenseman in the NHL."

works for me.. ad some pounds and muscle and hes a warrior..

i am just happy we have a legit 3rd pairing defenseman that can grow with the rest of our young dman..

tired of the slop fest with Gilroy, hams, even stralman i like but hes not even close to how Moore plays.. I only put Eminger before stralman just bc he plays more a physical game then strals..

Moore is also nice insurance if he can turn into a top dman in case Staal wants to play with his brothers after next year. Not trying to open up that worm again, just saying

May be the only time "Grit" and "Eminger" are used in the same sentence without the phrase "lack of" appearing somewhere.

I feel like the young rookie who is an extremely mobile defenseman IS the centerpiece of this trade.

Then at least get your facts straight. Staal is signed for two more years after this one.

same here in his draft year I was a big fan as well. I still love the Gabby deal. How can't you?

understood it was a close game, but did i miss something is it just torts being torts and falling back on his 'go-to guys'?

i'd love to see him race mcdonagh... i feel like he has a faster top speed. he certainly appears to use his speed more aggressively than mcd to pinch
 
We got the sweet end of the deal by Brassard, dorsett AND Moore. Solid puck moving which we desperately need, good two way d man with a big shot. Solid defensively, have a lot of potential especially playing with this group of already elite d man in Staal, McD, G and the offensive upsides to DZ and Stralsy. We really need to turn a few of these players into "homegrown" talent. People who are suggesting brassard and moore are fillers are overlooking their value down the line. Moore has looked solid and as a #22 overall who was passed on by a few teams in the Defense depth chart, if we had drafted him ourselves, we would be trying to groom him (and Brass) into the core. Playing on the right side, this kid is hopefully here to stay.

His first shift he iced the puck, then was nailed behind the net by Larose and he looked out of place the rest of that shift. Torts didn't give him much ice the rest of the night.

I love it, the guy has one bad shift and gets benched. Boyle has a bad career and gets 1st line minutes.
 
Moore to me has come in and done the most important thing possible. He took awful Hamrlick off the ice who allowed players to stand in front of Hank all alone. You can clearly see he has offensive skill. Getting him in the Gabby deal was a steal. Teams usually don't give those kind of talents away for under achieving players.
