John Moore

We likely will not have to worry about who sits after we play a very physical Maple Leaf team twice in 3 days ...that also like to shoot the puck often from the point . Somebody will be black and blue and will need some rest when it is over....and hopefully only black & blue .:nod:
 
I would say the player Moore reminds me most of at a young age would be Bret Hedican. Incredible skater but never figured out how to translate his skating into offense. We'll see if Moore can do that. I know this. Next year I would not put Girardi on the PP. He's awful there. He has no shot. Moore has a rocket.

How hard is it for a young guy to learn to shoot accurately? Stay on the ice for an extra hour after practice shooting the puck. Do it multiple times a week. Eventually, you will learn how to shoot accurately and even harder than 98 mph. This is no different than learning free throws in basketball.

If Moore learns how to fire 100 mph accurate shots, he will be a first pair defenseman considering his other skills. A guy who can play good defense, transport the puck up the ice and be a danger from the blue line is a first pair blue liner.

Or Moore can be lazy and remain a #6 defenseman.
 
Braydon Coburn. He languished for 2 years with Atlanta before getting a fresh start with the Flyers. Both are big D. Can skate.

That's why I'm all against trading DZ, as well. His shot too isn't accurate, but pretty heavy. Make him practice and it will improve.

Languished is not entirely accurate. He was 21 his first season with the Chicago Wolves playing the same type of role our Mr. Mcilrath is currently playing in the A, and he excelled at it. The next year he played 29 games for Atlanta and was traded to Philly.

If anything I say the guy totally underachieved from the expectations everyone had when he was drafted. They thought he was gonna be a Norris trophy candidate as recently as 2008 ! Same year they said that about Phaneuf and Mike Green.

Practice makes perfect when you have all the time in the world to shoot (free throws in basketball). Shooting in hockey is much harder, you're moving--on skates no less--you're rarely open, you have to think fast. Accuracy has a much to do with thinking quickly as the actual motion of shooting. Defensemen especially take time to develop that skill. I doubt Moore is lazy, even if he never develops the killer shot you think he's capable of.

Look at it this way. Martial artists and other types of fighters also have very little time because they might get hit in the face. But they still learn to think faster by practicing. It's called muscle memory where your muscles move how they should quickly and without you having to think about it.

Think of how you drive. At first, you paid attention to everything and you would get tired driving. After you've done it for a few years, you do everything effortlessly, even when a guy suddenly swerves in front of you. Why? Because your muscles know how to react perfect even to bad situations having had prior experience in it.

He shouldn't be, he's played quite well with us. It probably has more to do with Torts' unwillingness to use the whole bench. Moore is on the 3rd pair and Torts is an old school mind who will burn out his top 4 dmen long before the 3rd pair gets quality mins.

It's really rare for Tortorella to give any significant minutes to his third pairing. Unless the game is comfortably in hand, he'll give about 80% of the minutes to the top four. Moore is currently stuck behind McDonagh, Girardi, Del Zotto and Stralman, so unless he really wows Torts he'll probably continue to get eight or nine minutes per.

What will be telling about Torts' view of Moore is when (if?) Staal comes back. Does he bump Eminger and continue to play Moore? Does he do his normal "scratch one of the bottom pair guys seemingly at random" thing? It will be interesting.
 
Torts is intrigued by Moore. He likes the way Moore skates. They will work with him. Torts is trying to make the playoffs. Its really important for the team to make the playoffs. Its not about job security. Playoff revenue. Teaching and dealing with growing pains will resume next season. The Garden had budgeted the Rangers for X amount of playoff games so its VERY important for them to make the playoffs. What did Torts say about Miller? He will be a very good player for the Rangers in the future but the future is not now. Its a 48 game season in three months. The Rangers don't have the cushion to give young players some rope.
 
I think Moore could very well be a better skater than McDonagh. His stride is effortless and edge work is brilliant. Physical tools are stellar, but he needs to learn the ins and outs of the game.

To say he's a better skater than Mcdonagh is to say he is one of the best skaters in the NHL. I would say his skating reminds me of Mcdonagh, but I wouldn't go that crazy with it lol.

McDonagh is a very good skater, but I don't think he's one of the best in the NHL. His speed, acceleration and mobility are all on the top-end amongst defenders, but his edge work isn't as good as Moore's.
 
Torts told Sam and Joe that he was watching game tape and he couldn't tell if it was McD or Moore out there. They play the same side. Wear a visor. Have a 7 on their sweater. They are both very good skaters. That's a compliment. Torts watches 4 hour of tape a day.

maybe we'll get lucky and tortorella will make the best coaching move of his career: ask moore to change his number. i've been having trouble differentiating the 2 when the sweater wrinkles over the 1/2

Is that why he was giving him 10 mins a game while Girardi and DZ were out there being embarrassed shift after shift?

I love how Moore gives Nash the great stretch pass for the goal at the beginning of the 3rd during Monday's game in Toronto then essentially gets benched the rest of the period.

I know. It's getting frustrating to see. I have yet to see More look like he doesn't belong, yet somehow in a shortened season with less rest, he still cant get more minutes.
 
Moore has been, imo, the best part of the Gabby trade so far. He could bulk up a little, as I have seen him get thrown around a bit...BUT he oozes potential and is very good at most other things. Really looking forward to him learning the defensive game more, because that coupled with his talent and physical abilities(what a great skater he is...amazing at times.) will be dangerous for opposing teams.
