Actually ya, I'd rather keep the pick, use it for something else because this trade doesn't move the needle one bit. An upgrade on Kulak isn't what we need.

The type of upgrade we’d need could cost us an expansion draft slot unless a signifiant asset is also outgoing.

Don't know much about him, but from what I've read, he's a defensive Dman. Especially with Chiarot coming back soon, is this really what this team need? As of right now only Petry and Romanov can effectively move the puck and Romy is a rookie and will have his struggles. For a team that has so much trouble getting the puck out of it's zone, I'm not sure I understand this move... but what do I know right? lol

Very good pick up.

Mete is an AHL dman
Kulak is waiver fodder
Ouellet is an AHLer
Leskinen belongs in Finland
Chariot is hurt

Regardless of needing a top4 puck moving dman, which i concur....one of you complainers please enlighten me on how or why we dont need a bottom pairing D. Needed it as much as the puck mover.

Bergevin got us Toffoli, Anderson, Allen, Edmundson, Perry, Staal, brought over Rom. Thats GM of the year work. Enough with the Berg hate. Cant change the whole damn team(despite being on the way to do just that really)

When will our organization learn that we need puck movers and offensive dmen who can be a threat? We must acquire the most offensively inept dmen/forwards in the entire league. Sick of it.

Because they are hard to acquire and everyone wants them. Petry would probably get us 1rd pick + top prospect ++

Trades cannot be evaluated in a vacuum though. They need to be evaluated based on the needs of the team. Whatever it's current needs (prime time players or vets) of 2-3 years down the road (prospects or picks). I don't see how Jon Merrill fits in any needs we have. We currently need more than him. Kulak is fine as a bottom pairing guys and adding a real need (top 4) would push Chiarot where he blongs (3rd pairing). 2-3 years down the road we will need space for the kids. It's not a terrible trade like Jordie Benn was not a terrible trade. It's just a useless one in the grand scheme of things.

Well the hope is Merrill > Kulak/Benn

Just like Benn > Nesterov/Joe Morrow/Brandon Davidson

And you don't usually count on changing the course of the franchise with a package of Hayden Verbeek + a 5th.

Wish this GM would try and actually improve our roster instead of the patchwork trades for 6/7 dmen
He did improve our roster though.. He had a great off-season.

His mistake was probably staking 10m on Price. We just don't have a super star because we never get 1st OA and our 3rd OA don't turn out to be half as good as Huberdeau.

Even if he is it's not what we need.

bone fide top 4 LHD - Weber
Edmundson - Petry
Romanov - Chiarot
Kulak

Should be our defense. In which case Jon Merrill over Kulak brings not much to the table. Jon Merrill is another bargain bin move trying to fill a need with something cheap like the guy buying a bargain bin direct to dvd to fill a weekend after his girl friend left him.

Never seen someone double down on bis mistakes like this guy. He keeps getting on reclamation projects, long shots, hail-Mary's, plugs and washed up vets because he doesn't want to "give up assets". He refuses to admit he's wrong and tries to fix his mistakes with more mistakes and the bigger moron Mol$on sits and watches, year after year.

How many million dollars did he waste just to not pay Markov or Radulov what they wanted? How many plugs have come and gone and haven't managed to replace them yet?

We need a lot more than a top 4 defenceman... Thia team can't score goals.

It’s a philosophical issue - I expect something will give in the next 1-2 seasons.

With TBay only winning Cup after bringing in grit, if Leafs don’t win Cup, I suspect analytics focused hockey team building will be put on the back burner, reverting back to traditional structure, and the Dubas types will no longer be hired by NHL teams.

Our GM doesn't understand hockey
So you’ve been watching Red Wing games all year??

How many Vegas games have you watched to give me a true analysis of this player?? I’m sure you’ve been watching plenty of midnight games on weekdays.

Funny he was picked up by Vegas, a team most here like to use as a launching pad of ridicule when comparing GM’s and then was signed by Yzerman which is self explanatory.

Besides what you’ve read you know nothing of this player, just stat watching a reckon.

Yes, if you put a guy in a role above his head.

Danault's season last year was fine for a middle-sixer, and Edmundson is fine as a second pair guy. That is what 3.0-3.5 Mil gets you - not a top line player, and it's not fair to require it at that salary.
Sorry, but it's perfectly fair to expect a 2nd liner to be 1st line caliber, a 3rd liner to be 2nd line caliber, a 2nd pairing dman to be 1st pairing caliber, and a 3rd pairing dman to be 2nd pairing caliber.

He can try still work to be done . I also expose. Webber and Price in some sort of deal if willing to waive ntc to Seattle . This alone puts the habs miles ahead

Well that’s just it....we need D with expiring contracts, not with term as the expansion draft is something most are not considering

Yes Detroit let go a d-man for an ahl player and a 5th pick in a real weak draft
I bet Detroit just got totally roasted in that trade.
Cmon man. He's just depth , he's signed at minimum and hes 30 , extra d-man type of trade. He's nothing special.
