Player Discussion Joel Armia turnaround year?

  • Xenforo Cloud is doing server maintenance Thurdsay 13th at 9 AM GMT. Downtime is to be expected during the process. Server changes were implemented recently to cope with the traffic surge last week. This seems to be affecting the user login, so please anyone experiencing this, log out and clear the browser cache. I doubt. Danault smelled that this 2021-22 would be a disaster. And he left the sinking boat.

Danault left because Montreal management didn't make a serious effort to bring him back. Blaming fans is a cop out. Tons of fans wanted him back.

He knew darn well that Weber and Price had serious health problems. Geez, he was with them every day. The players are well aware of injuries to their teammates.
 
Armia, Hoffman and Drouin would be 3 of the first guys I'd want to ship out and I could care less on their returns.

We aren't going to win a lot of games in the next year and a half, but I'd rather see this team losing with guys showing effort and heart as opposed to minimal effort and laziness like these 3 often play with.

Fans are a factor in this. There was a lot of movement on the "he's not worth $5M+ for a 3C" and Bergevin agreed with it. I told some posters, you sure you want to agree with Bergevin? :laugh:

He likely knew about Weber yes. But not even Price expected his season to be derailed like that. Sorry, I think he left cause he was disrespected by both the fans and management. Both are factors. Team direction? I think Danault stays if he was respected

There was a movement to keep Radulov/Subban/Markov/etc, Bergevin doesn't listen to fans and sure as hell fans can't make anything happen.

Bergevin made different decisions at different points of time. In terms of Danault, Bergevin agreed with some of the fans who said we can't pay him that much cause he is a "3C". Turns out, it was for the best cause we fell flat on our face and should head down a rebuild road. However, if we had good direction, that was a horrible decision to let him go and overpay Gallagher for him to stay. There was room for Danault and all we had to do is not sign Savard or Armia. Or trade Drouin. Lots of options we could of explored to retain Danault if the narrative was to remain competitive.
 
Seeing the effect that St Louis has had on Caufield I started to think if he would be able to dig out the goal scoring Joel too. IF he stays healthy for any meaningful period that is.

After all he was the best 17yo goal scorer in Finnish league ever, until some certain Laine kid came.

Granted, Armia is a whole different package than Caufield, who is much more like Martin himself.

In the last 3 years of the buyout, those would be the years we'd expect the team to start being more competitive. I would rather have his cap hit on our books while this team will likely suck the next 2 years, in the last year of his deal we might have a better chance of trading him.

A lot of it will come down to Caufield (if he has a great year and gets an 8 year extension) and if Dubois wants to come here when he's a UFA. If he does then I imagine we'll need some money.

Armia is essentially deadweight, and when you have guys like Price, Hoffman and Gallagher who are also deadweight then you have to start trimming somewhere so you can at least give the kids some competent vets to play with.

Dadonov, Byron and Drouin will be gone after this year clearing like $14M and 3 roster spots that can be filled by cheap younger guys like Ylonen, RHP etc.

I want plugs like Hoffman/Armia/Gallagher gone, but don't want to take on additional cap space or additional years of cap hits in doing so.

14m opens up next year but hockey doesn't end next year.

The following year there's Hoffman coming off the books with 4.5m but there's also new contracts for I'm assuming Dach if he signs a bridge, Edmundson, Barron and hopefully a Dubois run.

That being said, that might be too many unknowns and we'll have to maybe wait to see how this year plays out. For all we know, Dach might not work out, Eddy might want to go to a contending team and Caufield might take a step back and Dobois may not want to come here.
