Getting rid of 6.5 million in dead cap space for 3 years after his season is not an emotional decision. In fact, deciding to keep Gallagher for his past contributions is an emotional decision.

Yes he is that bad, he is awful.

I mean if you think we will still be a bottom 5 team for the next 4 years then sure you might as well keep Gally, but they obviously want to start making a push for the playoffs sometime soon. Suzuki will be 29 years old when Gallagher's contract ends, they obviously want to capitalize on his younger years rather than trying to make the playoffs when he's in his 30s.

Gallagher is currently on the 3rd line so no, it wouldn't be mismanagement at all to give Roy/Farrell/Heineman a chance in the top 9. Development isn't top 6 ice time or bust.

Saying it over and over again doesn't make it not emotional.

Lets run through your scenario. You say that Gallagher is awful and you want to give a late 1st to move Gallagher. You want to wait until you know if the pick will be low or not. So:

1) The trade can't really happen before the 2025 deadline unless Calgary and Florida are both dominant, but would either way happen during the 2024-2025 season at earliest.
2) That means the cap space benefit is more for the 2025 and 2026 off-seasons. Montreal is projected to have somewhere between 40 mil and 60 mil in cap space for those offseason's (before accounting for Price's contract). Obviously that space will go down as Montreal re-signs guys, but they don't really have guys up for contracts in the next few years that would require that space. It would be hard for even a guy like Bergevin to bungle that much cap space.
3) We know that current Habs management has no issue giving vets less playtime if their play warrants it (see: Armia, Joel). Hell, Gallagher already played less on the PP last season than he has in his career and its likely that only goes down.
4) Gallagher is on the 3rd line now. I'm not sure why you think he'll be on the 3rd line in 3 years (or even next season).
5) The team would still want veterans around (like literally any NHL team). They have 3 forwards 25 or older in the top-9, and one of those guys is clear trade bait. Gallagher is the only guy over 30 in the top 9. Going with an entire team of early to mid 20s players isn't a thing that any NHL team is going to do.
6) Again, Gallagher is injury prone and other injuries happen too. Roy/Farrell/Heineman will get a chance in the top 9 whether Gallagher is around or not. Its up to them to earn a spot.

So yeah, it would definitely be an emotional decision. Montreal doesn't need the capspace, Gallagher is not going to stop guys from getting opportunities and he wouldn't block Montreal being competitive. Just like how Dustin Brown didn't prevent LA from being competitive.

He has not been fine whatsoever when healthy and I'm not going to keep guys like Roy/Heineman/Farrell in the minors if they perform well and deserve a shot. Of course there is no rush to get rid of Gallagher's contract yet, but giving up a late 1st (would wait and see what the Flames 1st is first) to get rid of Gallagher is a no brainer.
I can’t see Hughes giving up a first to get rid of deadweight — he’s more likely to explore other avenues. The one scenario where I’d imagine Hughes trading such a high pick would be when the team is in contention and there’d be a missing piece he’d absolutely need to get the team to the next level.

For everyone "high-fiving" each other over Armia, I just listened to AC and MSL just said he loves Armia and not to think we'll never see him again.
Man it seems like Marty has been blowing a whole bunch of smoke up our ass these past few days. Anderson is such an improved player our assistant coaches are so well respected and now Armia is one of his favorites. :skeptic:

Habs would have lost Primeau. Cheap goaltending many teams are going in that direction. After Vegas won a Cup with league minimum goalie. St.Louis did it also, few years back.

Agreed. Hats off to you, and I learned something today though I am not sure of all of the whys and hows.

Hughes clearly made a big deal about getting Price on in-season LTIR, saying things like "you can't accrue cap space when you use off-season LTIR".

But then we went ahead and put Dvorak on LTIR before the deadline.

I do see that this method avoids the bonuses for Slaf, Guhle, Barron* and Monahan being counted on the daily cap, though they will be added in at year end based on actual bonuses earned, and we will very likely have the room to absorb them with no effect on next year. (*this might only be true if they are not cut at one point and then return - yes?).

It seems to me now that Price does not need go on LTIR until we somehow use up the space created by flipping Armia and Xhekaj ($321.667) or Dvorak is cleared to return. We can also put Wideman on in-season LTIR and use that space ........ if we plan to waive him once he is healthy.

That being said, is there any harm to Price going on LTIR tomorrow?
Sorry i couldn't reply earlier.

You probably got the answers to your questions by now.
If not, you should check out CapFriendly's LTIR page. I'm sure they explain it better than i can.

I checked out the page. Do you or anyone else know in the Habs specific case, does the club accrue space once the Armia/Xhekaj flip is/was done?

Once we flip Price and Dvorak, will we be able to accrue the difference?

I would love to share a drink with you as we are of a similar vintage.

I went 7 months but I am currently ailed by a sore back. I reached out to an old familiar frend and he welcomed me with open arms.
Hey friend, it’s different for everyone and that’s fine with me. I can be around it no problem, but just not for me anymore. Sorry to hear about your back.

Do what the Leafs did to their goalie, just operate on something to get rid of him.....piece of cake for them........
No way does he give up anything to get rid of Gally....LTIR is knocking on the door.

It was just a random thing man, I am feeling shitty and turned to the comfort of an old friend/enemy.
Back troubles?? Really sorry to hear man....

The gm who would have taken Yoëëlllle Armia have to take 10 glass of wine to claim him. And next morning having an hangover, lol.
So where do me deliver that wine? I'm buying and paying for freight as long as it gives the promised result of a GM finding Yoel pretty again.

Man, my last bottle of wine had so much tannin, you know the dark red stuff that makes red wine so harsh. My gf didn't like that spanish wine. Too strong on the taste. There is half of this bottle and it will take few days to finish. Maybe I can use it in cooking. I'm not crazy about wine anymore or I need to pay extra $$ to afford a good one.

Booze never gave me regrets, I quit hard liquor as part of my crackdown on sugar. My life is good but dealing with pain for the last 4 days made me go back, shame on me I guess.
I tryed a natural trick to remove some of the back pain, something I endure for years. I used a bit of green clay. The thing is : I don't use it often enough so I can't tell you if it works. There is controversy, some says it works, some say it doesn't work.

A lot of Finn's are like Armia. Tons of skill. But They have no push to them. Koktaniemi was similar, even Laine with all his skill there is something missing there

Feels like Armia is an easy target.

I didn’t believe they would waive him, other than a paper transaction, but it seems like Armia will have to play some game for the Rockets.

I’m probably in the minority, but I didn’t feel like Armia had a bad camp. He had an okay performance and created some chances. He wasn’t worse than other players there.

I wonder if they make a deal where he plays only home games. Would keep him close to Montreal without too much of the pain associated with the AHL.

His wife is a nurse, and probably the reason he got hit with covid that many times.

Hopefully he gets some success and comes back motivated in the NHL.

Whether he can turn his career around or not, because of his age, he's not part of the future. So better to put him on waivers than Ylonen or Primeau, who at least have a chance of being a part of the future.

Sure, I’m not arguing that point.

I’m actually happy Ylonen gets a chance to play this season.

Still feel bad for Armia. Sure the money is nice but it probably doesn’t feel good to be in the AHL when you have close to 500 games in the NHL.
