I’d agree with you if he didn’t already have a season plus worth of games under his belt. He has peers on this team that are in similar situations and they’re making him look stupid. He has size, a solid shot , supposedly a nasty side. He uses none of it. I personally don’t think it looks good for him in regards to an nhl career, at least not here in NJ. Our management is saying the minors aren’t an option. It’s sink or swim time and he’s not a good swimmer, it seems.
I have a son his age. I’m not defending his play. I’m saying he just isn’t mentally ready for the grind of the NHL from my observation. I have to deal with a 20 year old all the time. He’s smart and capable and very talented in his chosen field. That said he still doubts himself and needs emotional support and can take adult criticism personally. If Zacha has lost his confidence and his heart isn’t in it then all the benching in the world will just reinforce the negativity. Send him down and maybe he grows up maybe he doesn’t but you can’t rush maturity. It happens differently for everyone. Professional sports leagues are the antithesis of supportive. It’s dog eat dog in every facet including your own team and young players that need extra attention are just a drag on a coach who just wants the players to execute the game plan and have no time to really mentor or develop a player. Take a kid with a fragile confidence and have him second guess himself with no real way to correct the mistakes and these are the results.
