Jets Upcoming Free Agents

It was never disclosed what the sickness was. This just makes the comeback attempt highly dubious. We’ll see what happens. It’ll be interesting if nothing else.
Just my opinion, but I think Toews was burn’t out after years of only playing intense hockey, and needed an emotional and physical break from the game. He could have said he had some strange illness, while he was under contract to the Hawks, but I think he was burn’t out, with no will to play.

The best thing he could have done was to take time away from the game, and his passion to play is back, so we’ll see how he does. I think he’ll be a great depth add.

Can't sign with a new team until July 1st. Not sure how that works for a guy who hasn't played in 2 years.

Unrestricted Free Agents (UFA)

UFA's are free to sign with any team, and their previous team receives no compensation. UFA's cannot sign contracts with new teams until July 1 at 12pm Eastern.
That rule is for UFAs on expiring contracts

For Toews that July 1st came and went a couple of years ago

Everybody is commenting like Towes is coming to the Jets “for sure”, but we haven’t heard an official announcement from anyone?

Be great to hear from Toews’s agent or the Jets. He’s not here til he’s signed, and there’s a lot of interest in him, that I’m reading.

Yeah just to clear something up for everyone there is absolutely nothing stopping Toews from signing a contract today, he does not have to wait until July 1st. It's just far more likely that the Jets or really any team that is going to sign him is waiting until after the finals. It's a hype move as much as anything else and announcing it just before or during the finals takes attention away from it.

It's likely that wherever Toews signs whether it's here or elsewhere they will wait until around the draft to make the announcement. If it goes any longer then that there is likely more interest and he's weighing his options.

Another scenario is the Jets are waiting to see what happens with Ehlers and may wait until that ship sails either way to lock it in.

Shame they don’t have an in-person draft anymore. Chevy could have trotted out Toews in a Jets jersey when announcing the pick.

Once people find out how much mosquitoes are in the prairies it might be even worse. At least when we are a frozen tundra the bugs are dormant.
Mosquitoes in the city are pretty rare these past few years. I don't know if it's just been dry, or if the city is really on top of larvaciding, but I can probably count on one hand the number of times I've been bothered in the back yard by mosquitoes the last couple of summers.

Look at Ovi and Perry for example, if Towes if truly healthy now he could still be a solid addition at least for a season or two, it all comes down to his health and if he is in game shape or close to it.

You pick 2 guys out of thousands. Add Jagr and Howe. 4 guys out of thousands.
It is not impossible. It is simply improbable. He might still have a little left in the tank and provide some leadership. A high level of performance is unlikely.

It's hard to say. I don't think he'd come back if he was going to embarrass himself. Is he going to be a dominant two-way 1C again? Not a chance. But having a full 2 years off to train and get your fitness to a high level again could help him make a decent comeback for a 37 year old. Jagr often credits his time away from the rigours of the NHL schedule with his ability to keep playing.

Either way I hope it's with us because if by some miracle he comes back and is a solid player than it's the type of move that could put us over.

All I'm really hoping for is his skating is still solid, he can handle the physicality, his stamina is up to par, his defensive game and IQ is still there and he is still a wizard on the dot. If at least all that is there he is a solid bottom 6C option for us. I don't think that is to much to ask for and honestly I don't think he'd come back if he didn't think he at least had that going for him.

I agree he wouldn't be looking to come back if he didn't think he could still play. I'm all in favour of giving it a try. But people saying he is a sure thing are a little over the top. He is not going to be the player he was 10 years ago. TC will tell if he is able to play at an NHL level or not.

I hope you are right. I would hate for him to make a comeback with the Jets and be another Hendricks with more name recognition.

It's because it's dry.

The city does what it can with the budget it is given. The guy running the program is very good. But I can't give him credit for what nature is controlling.

I think even a half broken, covid infected, half assed 40 year old Toews would probably be a more useful player than Matt Hendricks was at any point in his career. No offence to Matt Hendricks.

As a Dude that golfs alot i have had a can of Off in my golf bag for 3 years and it's full . That's in the city though, the cottage in the evening is a little different.

Any updates on Ehlers ?
None. And I doubt we will hear anything until:

1. He signs with Wpg (doesn’t seem likely)
2. Negotiations and communication between Jets and Ehlers have stopped. Maybe leaked via a Murat or Wiebe - ie: I am hearing the 2 sides are no longer speaking (seems more likely)
3. The jets come out formally and say they tried all they could but expect to move on. ( more likely than 1, less likely than 2)

Interesting, do you have a link where it was stated they aren't talking any longer?

My guess is that we'll hear something definitive later in June. Jets are likely going to keep trying to sign him, but if he rebuffs their best offer they'll look to either trade his rights or a sign-and-trade (probably before the draft). If he's not going to sign, Jets need to look at alternatives via trade (starting at the draft) and/or in free agency. So that likely puts a time limit to the process.

He was done almost entirely due to getting sick. If he's fully healthy and in good shape then I don't see why he can't come back and contribute something.
And his supposed sickness was supposedly cured by a guru in India...well okay then!

Maybe we could re-sign Wheeler while we're at it! And whats Andrew Ladd doing these days!?

I don't think we hear anything regarding Ehlers one way or another while the playoffs are ongoing. TNSE is very, very respectful of processes and while the Stanley Cup playoffs are ongoing I don't believe they'd do anything to remotely distract from the finals (not that anyone anywhere else cares about the Jets). That's whether they sign him or trade his rights. Once the finals are done, I expect the noise will pick up.
