Jets Upcoming Free Agents

Can you name one arbitration eligible RFA that didn't come down to the wire? It's always the case, and that's league wide

Chevy could present an excellent offer, but Samberg (and his agent) would be best off to let Chevy sweat with the idea of getting him to cough up another little bit
It is not so much to let Chevy sweat, but more to see if another team comes in with a big offer sheet. Sometimes people lose sight that RFAs are still Free agents, just that their current team has matching rights. Most top players want to see what the landscape looks like before agreeing to a contract.

Jonathan Toews is 100% coming to the Jets. The only things holding it is that they're not allowed to sign him just yet, but not only that they need to get Ehlers, Connor, Lowry, Vilardi, and other expiring contracts settled before coming to an agreement. But from what it looks like it'll be a 1-year $2M with bonuses.
Why aren't the Jets allowed to sign him yet. He is not currently under contract to another team?

I think desirable markets do better than a 37 yr old, missed 3 of the last 5 seasons - last 2 of them consecutively, Jonathan Toews.
I think Toews will surprise a lot of people, and he’s exactly what the Jets need in terms of leadership.

Just because your 37, that does not mean your shot disappears, as Ovi is proving, as well as Crosby who’s still in the top 30 in scoring,

This will all depend on Toews desire to still play the game, coz if it’s there like I think, he’ll be a huge add for the Jets.

In a recent article I just read, Towes stated he “ doesn’t want his career” to be defined by how he left the game, and has something to prove, upon his return.

He’s going to be a Hall of Fame player, and the Jets can’t go wrong by giving him a shot.

There is no rule about signing players not currently under contract.

Yeah, there are no official rules but a Toews signing in Winnipeg would be pretty big news league wide and he doesn't want the spotlight off the finals.

On the flip side maybe the Jets wouldn't want to announce it either until after the finals as to capitalize on momentum around the draft.

Yeah seems like the type of guy you sign after the finals and maybe before or on day of the draft to generate hype around the team.

But seriously the league could use some news to keep people focused on hockey. They are letting almost a full week go by between games and most of their audience will be tuning out as summer sets in.

League might want it but the Jets will probably want to wait. If I were them I'd announce it at the draft and have him announce their 1st round pick. Do a double whammy.

If true that is a solid show me deal. I was hoping it would be 1 year instead of 2 but if its 1 you'd be stupid not to do it.

Not allowed to sign until July 1st. But Toews would be getting $2M for tax purposes for a hometown discount.

None of that really has much to do with what I said, but... yes?

Why aren’t they allowed to sign until July 1? He isn’t under contract to any other team.

Can't sign with a new team until July 1st. Not sure how that works for a guy who hasn't played in 2 years.

Unrestricted Free Agents (UFA)

UFA's are free to sign with any team, and their previous team receives no compensation. UFA's cannot sign contracts with new teams until July 1 at 12pm Eastern.

Not sure how this applies to Toews as he isn’t under contract to any team. He is no different than any other player out of work without a contract.

That applies to players becoming UFA after this season. I don't believe it has anything to do with players not under contract this season.
Look at it this way - he would be signing after July 1, 2024.

He was done almost entirely due to getting sick. If he's fully healthy and in good shape then I don't see why he can't come back and contribute something.
It was never disclosed what the sickness was. This just makes the comeback attempt highly dubious. We’ll see what happens. It’ll be interesting if nothing else.
