Seems to me he was decent in Vancouver. Problem there was he was paid too much, and people were expecting him to match or improve on the 50 point season he had the previous season with Columbus. At 750k playing 3rd line minutes he should be a useful player. Good signing.

I think Maurice preferred a specific type of depth player as he wanted his depth players to do specific things. Yes he would have wanted good players in the style template he preferred but Gagner doesn't match the straight line grinding types that Moe liked on his third and fourth lines.

It's no surprise that Florida has gone out and gotten him those types of role players since he signed on there.

I think he had a specific template that he liked and Bowness may have a different one.
Notable players that Maurice was playing in the bottom six in 17-18 that aren’t on the jets anymore include Little, Perrault, Tanev, Copp, Roslovic, and Armia, I don’t think Maurice hated having better or non roll players in the bottom six when available.

“Sorry Little, Perreault and Roslovic since you’re in the bottom six now and aren’t straight line grinders you’ll have to sit in the press box” - Maurice (probably)

I’m sure his blood was boiling when he was forced to play a skilled player like Hayes on the 4th line in 18-19.

When he had the talent he used it.

It’s pretty simple if you don’t have cap and have to spend the minimum on bottom six players you aren’t going to get players with more skill. this year is probably the only year teams will get good depth players signed cheap because so many teams are at the cap and the cheap teams are already above the cap floor.

Florida is getting these players because they’re having cap problems.

Do people actually think Maurice turned down or told Chevy he doesn’t want better bottom six players?

The team has continued to lose its good depth players since 17-18, this is the first year the Jets actually have cap space to strengthen the bottom six.
I agree -
It's silly to assume Mo would not have wanted this guy on the team at this price - he brings all the things Mo usually wanted in his vets - especially strong PK and good locker room impact..
The fact that he can also score a few goals would have been a positive with Mo and to think otherwise under the assumption we know what Mo wants, is quite a stretch.

Edit: Nice pickup up for the Jets - didn't see this one coming.
Good example of adding something at a low rate, that we really needed.

Good sign, good price.
Just when they were about to bag Chevy, someone yelled "Wait!!, there's a pulse!"

Basically filling the old Wellwood role. 4th line/healthy scratch that could play some spot duty in middle six. Back to the future!

That isn't at all what I was getting at and you know it. Every coach if they have a surplus of legit second line caliber players will balance their lines out.

I was talking purely about the style of play of cheaper depth pieces. Gagner signed for league minimum so cap isn't at all a factor here. Our league minimum guys under Moe all fit a similar template.

Those aren't players Maurice picked for his 4th, they're players that Maurice didn't consider good enough for top 6 (he was wrong about Perreault / Copp, and Little was only moved down once Stastny got here) but were too good to bench.

I guess Maurice not being dumb enough to bench Little and Perreault is a point in his favour maybe?

But players like Sam Gagner don’t typically sign league minimum contracts tho, typically for league minimum you get league minimum results.

This is a special offseason that’ll see lots of good depths players taking cheap contracts because this is the third year of a flat cap and players salaries have continued to go up, the NHL seems to have ran out of cap space finally and it’ll probably be like that for another two or so offseasons.

We aren’t Toronto we don’t have good players on the back end of their careers willing to play in the bottom six for peanuts.

If Chevy was able to sign better players for league minimum Maurice certainly would have loved having them.

Our fourth line and much of the jets bottom six have been players playing for practically league minimum for the last three years, you can’t expect to get good players at that price under normal circumstances.

Do you truly think Maurice told Chevy he’d rather have players that are bad skaters and that he wants his entire fourth line to put up 35 points combined in a season versus, three players that are better skaters and will combine for 80 points?

Those aren't players Maurice picked for his 4th, they're players that Maurice didn't consider good enough for top 6 (he was wrong about Perreault / Copp, and Little was only moved down once Stastny got here) but were too good to bench.

You have no idea what players Maurice ever “picked” for his fourth line, we know what league minimum players Chevy managed to sign for our fourth line.

League minimum players aren’t good, are we surprised our league minimum fourth line wasn’t good?

I honestly love this signing.

Would've liked to see Brassard sign too, but anyway I like this one more than the Rittich one.

I'm Confused . I get that he's a good penalty killer. Good "depth " player and good in the locker room. But hasn't the reason the top 6 has been played to death is because of lack of scoring punch in the bottom 6 especially the 3rd line?

He got 13 goals in a virtually full season. Lets say he plays 76 this season. That's what? 11 goals pace? That's Lowry production or worse. And many say we should move him to the 4th line as it is.

Don't get me wrong. Im not poo pooing this signing. I guess I'm not as impressed about it as most here. I don't see how this addresses our lack of bottom 6 scoring issues.
