Not sure Heinola can demand anything. When you are 9/10 on a depth chart collecting the NHL paycheck beats the minors. I think he probably stays around for another year since he is under contract next season. Maybe he gets waived, but more likely they keep him on as #8 next season? Anyways he is deep depth at this point.

I think they will let him go back to Europe. But time will tell.

Jets fourth round RD prospect Garrett Brown and University of Denver are facing off against 3rd round RW prospect Zach Nehring and Western Michigan for the NCHC championship tonight at Xcel Energy center in St Paul, MN. Game is about to start, on CBS sports Network if ya got it
I didn't see the game.

Nehring's WMU team won 4-3 in 2OT.

Brown had an assist and finished +1 for Denver.

No points for Nehring but he had 7 shots on goal and finished even.

It was a great game. Denver went up 3-0 pretty early. Huge comeback for WMU.

Brown assisted on the first goal for Denver, just a wrister on net from the point that generated a rebound Denver capitalized on. I don't think he's ever going to be an offensive dynamo but he's a good skater, good first pass, big body. He'll make a solid stay-at-home defenceman. Right-shot helps too.

Nehring has developed so much this year. He is huge and knows how to use his size to gain position in front of the net. He didn't score last night but he always seemed to be involved in the play when he was on the ice. Looking forward to seeing him progress even further next year. I assume both these guys will spend at least one more year in college.

Here’s what we have for an 18th overall pick from two years ago who was touted, along with McGroarty, as being a possible future captain of the Jets.

A player who has fewer points per game two years in a row now.

A player who is UNDER a point per game in the OHL in his D+2 season.

A 20 year old who is 4th in scoring on his own team.

With prospects, progression every year is everything. Unfortunately Barlow isn’t even treading water, he’s going backwards.

Lots of young players mature and plateau early, but at least they show a minimal amount of progression every year. They never make the show. Barlow hasn’t even done that.

He showed well with the Moose during his short stay at the end of last season

I agree that his progression is not ideal but I'll wait until he plays some pro games before writing him off

There are plenty of Nic Petans out there too

Barlow is a really strange case, and certainly has thrown up some red flags. But I don't think he's a lost cause. He still has definable skills that translate to the NHL. His shot / scoring ability is the most obvious. He has decent size and strength and he plays an aggressive game, and has been effective on the forecheck and PK. He doesn't have great mobility or puck-handling but he has pretty good vision and is a quick passer.

My sense is that he's just kind of stalled in his 4th OHL season and probably would have been better served moving up to the next level. Being on a loaded team also limits his offensive productivity a bit. His trajectory is similar to Jake DeBrusk, and he kind of fits that style of play. DeBrusk's production stalled at the Junior level after being drafted but his style translated well to the pro game.

Barlow will need to have a very strong summer of skating and developing quickness and spend a year or two at the AHL level to adjust to the pace. But I could still see him having an NHL career as a middle 6 winger who plays a straightforward game with some goal scoring contributions.

I agree with most of this but I disagree that he's a good forechecker. He isn't pratcularly good given his size.

He is going to need to add strength and speed so that he can win those puck races and board battles to up his forechecking game.

Was really happy with the Barlow pick. He has not progressed well. Hopefully a year or two on the Moose will help.

At the time of the draft I was hoping for Matthew Wood (went 15th) or Bonk , but after learning more about Barlow, I thought he could develop into a poor man’s Mark Stone.

Now I just don’t k know what to make of him. Really like his scoring touch, but if the rest of his game cannot be rounded out I don’t know how effective he can be.

I was aboard the trade him train leading to the deadline, but I guess we’ll see how he does with the Moose next year. That said, shame on the organization if they don’t support their prospects with good AHL vets again next season. That’s gotta be hard on the young prospects trying to develop their games.

The 2023 draft was a weird one. Almost all the players drafted in the first round, outside of the top 10, have had down years this year compared to last year.

Have they? I guess there's a few...Buium is down slightly. Parascak had a pretty off year. And Vanacker too.

A bunch of guys switched leagues, so it's not really apples to apples (NAHL to NCAA, European leagues to North America, or just lower Euro leagues to higher)...and even looking at their NHLe's they're not way off.

But you have to expect more variability as you get further into the draft. If they were blue chips, they would've gone in the Top 10.

Things are gonna get weird now that guys can jump from CHL to NCAA and back on a whim. We are going to see some very funky development paths going forwards. The CJHL (specifically BCHL and AJHL) will be heavily impacted as more kids will opt to play CHL now since it doesn't block them from going to the NCAA. But you'll likely see some kids start in the NCAA and if things go bad jump back to CHL and kids and their families might start using the NCAA even more to push themselves into a specific CHL team.

I have no idea how teams and the league will handle this. As it stands if the player is signed they generally have to go where the team tells them to or be in breach of contract but unsigned players have total control over their path and the same UFA loophole exists for CHL players as it does for NCAA players just generally CHL players never exercise that right when they are staring down that signing bonus.

As a side note I'm starting to wonder if the CHL should just start using a recruitment program over the draft as kids have a crap tonne of leverage to force themselves to certain teams now. The downside to that is certain teams hold massive advantages in that scenario but those teams are already hardly ever bad and if they are they usually aren't bad for long.

Does sound like the have and have not gulf might widen. Really unique time that’s for sure.

Yeah it's going to interesting to see how this is handled. From an NHL perspective it might lite a fire under some teams to sign players as quick as possible for fear they may make the jump to the NCAA and to ensure you control their development path better. NCAA teams will be recruiting heavily out of the CHL leagues now as well, I've already seen a few kids who played CHL this year committing to some NCAA schools for next year.

Zach Nehring's Western Michigan Broncos qualified as the #4 seed in the NCAA Division 1 tournament, top seed in their regionals, which starts Thursday in Fargo. Wonder if he gets a tryout with the Moose after the season.

Only his first NCAA year - you think he's one-and-done?

My guess is he stays in college. The Jets will be graduating too many forward prospects out if junior as it is and will need actual roster space to develop them all properly.

Undrafted Liam Malmquist is in his D+6. 5'10", 168 lbs, so not a big kid. From Edina, MN.

His NHLe this year is a career-high 0.230 (leading his team with 45 points in 35 games in the NCAA at U of St. Thomas).

A D+6 of 0.230 puts him between Barron (0.280) and Parker Ford (0.187). Might be a useful AHLer. The Moose need all the help they can get...

Edit: And I think this is what @voyageur was thinking for Nehring - although they can't compensate him beyond expenses or he loses NCAA eligibilty.

Roster space for solid Ahl vets with nhl experience so they don’t get pummelled like they did this year .
