I think it's the arbitrary nature of whether a goal counts or not in standard +/- that makes it such a maligned stat.

It tends to punish offensive players and reward defensive players the way goals are counted (e.g. PP players can only earn minuses, PK players can only earn pluses).

You can't really just look at +/- with no other context and make an accurate judgement of a player.

There is that and more. @garret9 has written extensively on it. I don't have time right now but I will see if I can track it down and post the link here. Even simple on ice GF/A is flawed, though much better than +/-.

Goal and an assist for Julien tonight.

Does anyone know who Julien’s linemates are? Does he play with Barkey or Cowan? 1st line?
I’m always a bit sceptical on these players who all of a sudden seem to find their scoring touch, but there’s a couple other players on the team that have consistently scored over the years. Are they lifting Julien up or is he a play driver as well?

First line with Barkey last night. Cowan on the second. He's also on the PP.

Also keep in mind this is Julien's first full season in the OHL.

Honestly he hasn't played with them as much as you'd expect. Prior to the world Juniors Julien mostly played 2nd line and Barkey and Cowen played 1st. I can only think of one game they were all on the same line. Gazizov and Halttunen were his main linemates for a good chunk of the season.

I think depending on what roles open up on the roster it would be those 2 and possibly Chibrikov (not including Heinola).

My guess is there very well may not actually be an open spot upfront next year. I doubt the org will want any of its young players on the fourth line and we currently have all our top 9 under contract or team control.

I was just thinking that too they may want all of McGroarty/Lambert/Chibrikov/Lucuis/Salomonsson on the Moose next year as there is a whole bunch of UFAs at the end of next season

Yeah, I expect we start to see our forward prospects slow baked in the AHL much like what the org has been doing with its defensive prospects for a while.

Ya, our right side seems to have a number of potential UFAs. Guys like Ehlers, Iafallo, Apples and Names are UFAs after next year and Vilardi is a RFA.

Could be lots of room for McGroarty and company to fill spots in 2025/26. Though Rutger looks like he could contribute next year in NHL. Will be interesting to see if Lambert is NHL ready for next year. There’s a 2C role open.

Org needs to decide if they are signing core vets like Ehlers and Connor or do they feel Barlow and McGroarty could fill their roles. Connor’s offense would be very hard to replace.

But a 2nd line of Perfetti-Lambert-McGroarty might be interesting in a year or two. With Barlow in the wings if Connor doesn’t resign.

That's true, I was mainly thinking of who might be "ready" if there was a spot. I can only think of those 3 as guys who could be ready.

Hard to say. I think it would depend which role was open. The most likely role would be a third line sport so likely McGroarty

I think the Jets might move Iafallo and replace him with McGroarty. They could use his cap space to extend Perfetti, and might want to re-sign Dillon and DeMelo. Schmidt buy-out and trade Iafallo gives them enough cap room to extend Perfetti and sign both Dillon and DeMelo.
