I seem to recall that Roso had at least as many chances as a Jet in a second line role (with better wingers) as he has had currently with Columbus. When players shine in other organizations, it could be for a variety of reasons. Some players can't handle some coaching systems.

Speaking of that, you can really tell that PLD came from a Tortorella-coached team... he's easily the best positioned center defensively on our team.
You mean, sound defensive positioning can be coached?

Morrissey looked more settled with Poolman back
I've never really liked Poolman that much, but man, having him back there made me realize what a quietly effective guy he is.

I hope to GOD that Beaulieu comes out instead of Stanley. I think Beau is a fine PB guy, but Stanley is building confidence and just looks so damned calm out there. Besides, he brings a really sensible level of physicality, which is the one thing we really needed Beau in the lineup for.

I can't wait for the Moose season to start so we can start getting Heinola and Samberg big minutes.

That's some pretty appropriately spread out minutes. I really think Nik's ice time is kept at that level because the team has realized playing him too much limit's his speed which is the main driver of his success. I'd bet that Nik realizes this too and is fine with it.

He's also on the 2nd PP which will bring his minutes down a little. Loved Stastny's game last night, can you play wing ? You bet your ass i can.

From what I can tell both from being at games in the past and watching on the tube, Nik typically gives it his all when he’s out there and provided the timing is right, is usually the first one off the ice.

If as an example you look at his linemates TOI, Scheif has always been one to stay out past his “allotted” shift time and he has 1st line PP time of 1:30 on avg. per PP. Copp works his ass off too and typically gets off the ice when he should, but he is a first line PK guy, so his mins would also top Nikolaj’s easily.

Only area where I think Nik could get a bit more time would be another 30 secs +/- per PP.

Guess all I am trying to say is he does not seem to be in a snit about his ice time and never voices his concerns about lack of ice time through the press like the recently departed ones. He just seems pretty cerebral and we are just so damn lucky to have him. I think having a Dad who is a high level coach has likely helped shape his attitude.

He’s easily my fave Jet.

That powerplay where we just Globetrottered the Sens was amazing. Speedbagged. I don't even know how to describe it. Among the most dominant I've ever seen from this team in 10 seasons. Worth the price of admission right there.
It was fun to watch. The Sens were being hyper aggressive and the Jets were finding the out a lot of the time. Connor especially never seems to make the wrong play when there's pressure on him. The powerplay works a lot better when everyone isn't just forcing the puck to Wheeler. Much more dynamic.

I'm pretty sure they're screwed anyway...

0.877, 0.868 - that's the SV% of Doug Soetaert and Ed Staniowski on the 81-82 Jets.
0.882, 0.836 - that's what Ottawa's getting out of Murray and Hogberg this season.

The thing is, I do remember seeing a graphic that showed Murray was starting to play much, much better.

the jets worry me. i know a W is a W. but still, can't helped to be a bit concerned

luckily it's ottawa who don't have much for finishing talent or goaltending, but against teams like toronto or mtl, that performance in the first would lead to more GAs

Oh, the team is dreadful. I have just followed the team a bit because my best friend is a die hard Sens fan.

Murray had really bounced back the past few games after an absolutely awful start. He was starting to look more like that goalie that we remember him to be a few years ago. Hogberg has fallen off a cliff and could barely be an AHL backup at this point. He loses his net a lot and let's in deflating, poorly timed goals that any NHL level goalie should stop without a second thought.

If the team has to depend on Hogberg at all, I fear there will be a lot of games like that one they had in Edmonton last week that are 5 or 6 nothing in the first with only a few shots against. Nobody should have to endure that level of sucking, even in a rebuilding year.

Meanwhile, hopefully that happens on Saturday when the Jets play them because Adam is coming over.

Waaahahaha!

Color me surprised, I really liked Stastny on Lowry's wing and thought the 11F7D system worked out well after the 1st period, which was all around awful hockey by the Jets minus Hellebuyck. It's weird to me that the biggest complaint with 4 lines was ice time distribution, then somehow cutting it down to 3 lines managed to balance things out. I guess that happens when you're playing ahead too though. Running 3 lines + extras could be pretty sustainable if the ice time doesn't get out of hand. Gives us 3 very strong lines rather than the 4 good pairings + 1 player to drag the rest of the line down that we did in PLD's debut.

Speaking of PLD, not a great game but deserves some credit on DeMelo's goal. Announcers commented that it should have been icing but he had beat it out and forced Murray to play it, then he had a good screen, not that it really mattered with the puck pinballing in. He also made another few nifty passes but it's clear he's not completely comfortable yet and that's understandable.

I know I'm gushing about Appleton a lot lately, but he's earned it. We need to find a way to keep him at the expansion draft.

Preaching to the choir, but if we're going 11F7D we really should be finding a way to get Heinola and/or Samberg in there. Have they even been sent down to the Moose yet? Season starts on Monday.

What I saw from the team was a lot of gaffes that looked as if they were the product of guys playing together that were unfamiliar with one another. That's why I don't really like 11/7.

We have our team nearly healthy. Lets get some sensible lines/ pairs and give them some time to gel and play off each others tendencies. I think we'll start seeing sharper execution once that happens.

It was an off-night where the talent we had just snuffed theirs out. That's what good teams do. They win games they shouldn't have.

That said, we were absolutely hemmed in against Ottawa and were outshot 10-2 in the first 10 minutes and outshot 17-6 by the end of the period. Helle stopped 2 clear breakaways while the game was still on the line. Failed breakouts, turnovers, chaos in our own end. Way too cute with puck protection. Failure to gain their zones. It was ugly, imo.

It was really only a favorable bounce that changed the Jets fortunes.

Yes a W is a W but I am not happy with that performance and I doubt management is either.

That's the type of game where it felt like if we were playing against a better team we might have lost by 10. Especially in the 1st.

Nice to see them get the win though, it's important to get the 2 points. We've got a stretch coming up where we play the Habs and Leafs a ton. That could define the season.

For not playing since game 1, Poolman had a good game. Already miles better than Forbert and Beaulieu IMO. Poolman can skate, and can transition better. I'd love to see Demelo/Pionk/Poolman on the right, and JoMo/Heinola/Stanley on the left.

Oh yeah, Murray's not a career < .900 goalie...I just found it astounding that a modern goalie tandem could be putting up a comparable SV% to an 80s team! Soetaert and Staniowski faced the Oilers 7 or 8 times that year and Gretzky put up 212 points himself lmao!

They work really hard and the first period was a testament to how well they can play when on their game.
But, as a young team, they get discouraged easily and that's the hurdle they need to work on.
Coaching will play a huge role in getting these guys to stick to their game plan

Agree. I find myself rooting for the Sens -- they're young, shy on top-end vet talent, and suffering from some inconsistent goaltending. But they work hard and play fast and deserve to win a few more than they have -- just not against us, of course.
