For every big win this team has, has followed up with an equally disappointing loss, especially to teams behind us in the standings. The definition of a treadmill team. I want us to make the playoffs and go on a run but I’m not blind to see this team has some deep rooted cultural problems, if we collapse and lose out on a playoff bid atleast we know major changes are happening, so I’m not going to get my self worked up over this team either we make a run or we tear it all down that’s how I see it at this point.

They are playing like the bubble team many thought they were. No real difference then the other bubble teams fighting for the last spots. They all have big wins and crushing losses over the past number of weeks.

15 minor penalties killed this game. I never shit on refs but if you're gonna let them play, let them play.

I realize 8 of the 30 PIMs were offsetting but that still leaves over a third of the game played on special teams.

Not going to blame the refs. Blame the players who took the penalties. But too many penalties sure disrupted that game.

2nd lowest CA/60, 3rd lowest SA/60, 3rd lowest xGA/60 and 31st in SV%. Tremendous defense. Terrible Markstrom.

Their offensive numbers are Top 10 as well (2nd CF/60, 2nd SF/60, 8th GF/60, 5th xGF/60).

If the Flames didn't have sub-Pavlecian goaltending they'd be fighting for top spot in the Pacific.
Which proves my point ... Markstrom won the game for the Flames.

The Jets defense is the shits...
Yes it is - and that's nothing new.
It's been stated by myself and others, that our blueline is our weakest link. Some agree - some don't - not trying to rehash that.

What makes it worse is that our defensively inept skill players (forwards) are tasked with making things easier on them - that's always going to be a burden for this group.
What's ironic is that our PK is good - but that's likely because there is less movement required and no ones paying any attention to the gap (when on PK) that we give away on rushes.

Anyway, that's why Bones has been preaching team D since day one - he's aware.
If we are not playing as a 5 man unit in all zones, we struggle - like last night.

can you explain how the DTW meter got it wrong? As far as I can see, the DTW meter says The Flames win that game 32 out of 100 times. Presumably, last night falls under one of those 32 out of 100 times does it not?
Ok, since you asked.
I use an abacus, slide rule, TI30 and an algorithm on my Commodore 64 to figure it out and the DTW didn't match up.

But the simpler explanation... the team that won the game showed less than 50%.
And DTW didn't match my eye test. I thought Calgary looked marginally better.

Losing to Calgary when they lost night before to Chicago at home is just sad.
This team deserves to miss the playoffs because of this game alone.

The word "deserve" is a relative term. Whether the Jets "deserve" to make the playoffs must be weighted against if the teams they are fighting with for that last playoff spot "deserve" to make the playoffs. Flames lost to the Blackhawks the other night, Preds have been basically riding Saros, do either of these teams "deserve" to make the playoffs over the Jets? It is not so clear.

Hellebuyck has been way below average for the last 6 weeks, and combined with the lack of finish and the ineffectual powerplay since basically the start of 2023, it's been more than enough to torpedo the Jets.

Hellebuyck is currently 6th with a +0.44 GSAA/60 and a .918 SV% (all situations) for the season to date. Pretty good! But...

...Over the last 6 weeks he's 24th at -0.08 GSAA/60 with an .898 SV%.

From the start of the season up 6 weeks ago, he was 3rd with a +0.65 GSAA/60 and .926 SV%.

The powerplay over the last 6 weeks is 31st in the NHL with an abysmally low conversion rate of 13.2%.

The big wins over Detroit and New Jersey had me thinking, well, if they can get their SH% back up and get decent goaltending and maybe get the powerplay working we could be in business. But alas...
That's the biggest reason for the Jets collapse ... their PP has killed them.
Look at the Oilers since the Ekholm trade .... they are 15-2-1 and the biggest reason is their PP.
20 for 57 .... that's a 35% clip. Oilers will probably break the record for PP%.
If they Jets would have just an average PP ... they would had at least 3-4 more wins.

Extremely frustrating. For some reasons I let them to get my hopes up only just to get disappointed later on.
Yeah, it's always frustrating when guys do that to you. The trick is not to get too jaded and refuse to let your hopes rise again.

When you have no expectations, you can’t be disappointed

Jets got goalied - again - by one of the weakest goalies in the league.

Does any other team get goalied as often as the Jets? Just asking.
Over a season? Yes. Lately? No.

Markstrom the night before vs Hawks .826 SV%
Markstrom vs Jets .971 SV%
Markstrom vs NHL (57 games) .881 SV%
See the difference.
Bad players can have good games.

I wasn’t terribly impressed with Markstrom. He was flopping all over the place leaving big gaps in the net but the Jets didn’t take advantage.

Jets sticks looked cold to me.
I was being nice and didn't want to show my bias.:D
Jets missed so many scoring opportunities, Markstrom didn't really have a hard night, most goalies don't facing the Jets perimeter shots and shots to the chest!
True the sun shines on a dog's ass some days.

Well, no expectations, no disappointments is a real thing.

Too jaded? I'm a Jets fan, impossible.

Not particularly, I expected as much. If I had high expectations from this team, it would have been disappointing, but I don't.

It's a hope vs expectation issue for me.

I have no expectations that they will accomplish much of anything this season. But I do still have hope that they will win out and get to the playoffs. But my biggest hope is that they clean house this off-season, which I don't expect will happen if they win out.

I hope that is clear but expect it is not.

The fact that our team has more ups and downs than a yo-yo suggests that team morale is extremely flammable and bi-polar. Confidence seems great at times but fragile. What happens or doesn’t in the locker room each game probably has a lot to do with it, and it may be as much what isn’t said as what is..

The last two wins generated a lot of hope around here, and it ain’t over by a long shot. If the team wants it badly enough, anything is possible, but all the lines need to have at least one primer on the blast cord.
Let’s see who can bring the spark in the remaining games.
The yo yo effect is explained by the ammount of parity in the league. That's why so many extensively poor teams have beaten so many extensively good teams and why their is a log jam at seasons end( as was predicted)........in this kind of situation little things make a big difference like effort and desire at any momment, and consistency seems to be the trait of just a hand full of teams.......we are not one of them nor is Calgary or the Preds. Should be a really interesting few games that remain......just flip a coin!

I asked a two separate friends of mine who both seemed ok marriages that didn't appear awesome what their secret was. In both cases although worded differently it was "lowered expectations". To be clear neither guy was selling out they were just aligning their expectations to the limited abilities of their spouse.

A solid life lesson I am trying to absorb

According to Moneypuck:

WPG 62.5%
CGY 31.8%
NSH 5.8%
So the Jets are still odds on favorite to get swept in the first round and end up with a mid first round pick (from either the US or Europe cuz Jets scouts don’t look for players in that hockey backwater of Canada) who may one day be a solid fourth liner.

Meanwhile, teams who know how to lose properly will end up with Bedard or someone else with first line or top pairing potential 😂.

Jets fans, welcome to the lower middle of the pack for years to come.
