i do think Stastny was a major loss. him along w/ copp were both solidly 2nd liners. copp was one of the most used fwds while on this team last season (in the league actually), and both provided versatility as C or W options. Perfetti i think offensively should score similarly to at least one of them, but not sure about the rest of his game. i am going to project he's not as good at actually playing at C yet as either of them. that still leaves us another 2nd liner/middle-6er down. then consider when injury strikes, having both of those being able to cover C or W is a major boon imo.

I dont think any1 forgets a year of development toward our "young core." it's a systematic part of the league. every team will have young prominent players w/ 1 more year under their belts..... ie: COL will have another year of development with Makar, Byram, Girard, Newhook, for instance. all = or younger than PLD. Similarly they have v strong players currently their prime, & evidently a regression candidate. same could be said for TBL, DAL, etc. unless the Jets have some quantifiable higher +1 year increase in play compared to all other teams, i don't think it's worth regurgitating over and over.

i see it as in the pool of players arrivals & departures vs last year.... the 2 of highest significance in actual on-ice roles & player quality were Stastny and Copp, who were both departures. Perfetti was on this team last year, but having him full-time will be obviously good for him/us long-term, however, i don't expect him to put up much higher scoring totals as either of those 2 (40-50 pts would be a v respectable rookie year), & i don't know if his game would be well-rounded or versatile as either of them. i think this team is slightly worse in player personnel vs last year, and the objective stats rate it similarly (at least prior to the Gagner signing)
Copp's 9 ES goals in 56 games are pretty easy to replace I think. I think Barron could score 10-12 ES goals in a season. No evidence to support this, but he could be a decent replacement for Copp. Perfetti can't replace Stastny, but Stastny was kind of a square peg with the Jets choosing to play Dubois as 2c last year, and refusing to demote Lowry, because when Lowry and Stastny were together their winger was Poganski, so the depth was the shits. Or maybe that was the coach...

Stastny smarts are irreplaceable. The goals, when I look at the lineup, would have to be both Dubois and Lowry scoring more, plain and simple. And playing smarter. Dubois should be highly motivated for a new contract, and Lowry is a highly motivated player game in game out. He should profit from having Appleton as a winger for a full year again, and if those two can get back to 2021 scoring rates, the Jets are a playoff contender.

If Perfetti goes back to the spot he finished last year, I think he's going to put up a lot more points, physically more mature, and mentally prepared for the next step. He could be a secret weapon on the PP, and what the PP alignments look like will impact output, those are spots Stats and Copp held, but conceivably Perfetti and Gagner could have more success in.

That's my optimistic hat.

An injury or two and this lineup starts to look ugly. I wonder at what point, and who Chevy moves, if or when he needs to sacrifice defense for forward help.

Or should we expect waiver wire additions again.

From what Bowness was saying, I don't think it's necessarily a heavier focus on defense, but rather a focus on a defined system and agressiveness all over the ice.

The one thing that I think measurably deteriorated from 17-18 for the Jets was agressiveness. We became passive and almost timid all over the ice. The 17-18 team was like a pack of wolves, and if we can get back to playing like that in our zone and offensively that shouldn't limit offensive chances it should allow for more.
Agreed on the lack of aggression. It showed in all facets of the game. I'd also add in there is a difference between a team playing a defensive style and players being defensively responsible. And that needs to start with 55.

Who is coaching the defense this year? Both Baumgartner and Dubois have coached defenses but both are with the Moose as far as I know. Is someone getting promoted? Or will one of Arniel, Lauer or Johnston have those duties?

I don't think he's mentioned that. He just mentioned special teams but I'd imagine one of Lauer or Johnston will handle it since Arniel predominantly has handled forwards in the past.

I think any change in system and the subsequent buy in of that system can produce a much higher return than any moves chevy didn't make this summer. Throw Milano into that tire fire of a system we were running last year and it's not gonna fix shit. And for everyone clamoring for a blockbuster, you have to give to get. Even then, the new guy(s) you aquire from a trade still need to be integrated into and buy into the way the team plays.
This says it all -
IMO, we had a few problems last season but the big one was systems / compete (or a lack of).
If we can take the same or similar roster and convince these guys to play more of a complete game, we are way ahead of where we were.
That's a tall order but it's the one that the team tried to address via Bowness - I'm looking forward to seeing how that turns out - and I'm optimistic.

Oh I'm not one who just aimlessly hates Maurice. I thought he was very good for the team for the first 5 or so years here. I feel he ran out if ideas and started loosing his players a couple of years back and the org should have long sense moved on.

Good point about reporters. Hard to judge when we don't get the interview ro hear.
I'm just sayin, there is plenty to aim at with Maurice. He was given everything a coach could want and he rarely met expectations, maybe 2 years if you include his first half year getting them into playoffs. A legit 1C, legit 1D and a Vezina caliber goaltender should be enough for a good coach never mind a supporting cast of some pretty high end players and a deep team spending to the cap. He had one answer with all that. "Put Scheifele and Wheeler out". For that matter he did the same thing with Buff and it would kill him by the 3rd period when there is no need for that when you have Meyers and Trouba behind him.

Seems organization is committed to youth this year. Reason for lack of signings. Getting optimistic about this year.

I believe Bowness is good with the youngins.

Copp's 9 goals in 56 gp were a feat reach solely by Jets top-6ers last year, and that's not even considering the additional games played by Jets Fwds given their full years with the team. its about a 12-13 goal/82gm pace. just looking back at '19-'20: 6 fwds hit that feat goal pace. so i don't know if it's easy to replace as you suggest. I don't know squat about Barron but if he's playing with Lowry i am going to estimate his goals will be quite low. but could be wrong which i fully concede.

yea i agree on Stastny, which is why i find it odd why posters fully dismiss his departure. smarts, leadership, on-ice 200 ft play, couple of our better lines past couple years often had stastny on it, and then both he and copp's versatility playing wing or C at strong levels. maybe Gagner replaces some of that? i don't think he's as good as Stastny though. I don't see much more goal scoring out of Dubois. i think both his 5v5 and PP scoring were out of the ordinary last year (one high, one low), id estimate around 25-30 for him again.

i do like perfetti on the pp too.... but i wonder if vet status might get in the way of that as we've seen before of him being on pp1 though.

agreed, injury in the top-6, notably at C, it gets real ugly. I do feel a bit more comfortable having Gagner in a temp. top-6 fill-in rather than harkins, lowry, appleton for example.

you write all these players will be substantially better, and have career years etc. how often does it work that way?

None have played defense, so it does seem odd. I mean it's probably not a big deal, but it does seem strange to have 4 ex forwards coaching the Jets, and 2 ex d-men coaching the Moose...

Huddy was a multi time Cup winning defenceman and we saw how that turned out.
It was good for awhile, easier to coach when there is talent.

I am sure it happens but I am just not familiar with team having coaches that don't focus specifically on defense, and having a former forward coach defensemen is rare. Having 2 d coaches on the Moose, I think there's a chance Eric Dubois gets more opportunity to work with the group, some of whom he has worked with in the past.

I think the aggression is a big thing. You can be aggressive both offensively and defensively - or not.

It's not that odd in my opinion. It's my understanding that both bowness and arniel are strong defensive coaches.

Yup, also from what we have heard Johnston is heavy into scoring chabce analytics so maybe he handles the offense and brings a more modern element to the team. Lauer ran a suffocating forecheck in Edmonton so hopefully that comes back as well.

It's funny how often we hear the expression "those who can't do, teach" but never the opposite notion, "those who did great, can't teach worth a shit"
I seem to remember reading about this in the past. I think it was applied to the Great One when he tried his hand at coaching. The idea of teaching players to do something that was beyond what they had skills for but came so easily to you.

I just think some have an aptitude for teaching and some don't. MSL is a hall of famer and he was praised for his work. I also think Crosby would make a good coach if he chose to go that route after playing. He's almost always on the iPad with his teammates showing them things.

As I recall, it was considered rather shocking that Wayne Gretzky wouldn't just be the perfect coach, as if he could somehow just distill his greatness into the team's water bottles.

Remember the first year of the shootout and coaches were just putting out their best goal scorers and shocked that they were stinking up the joint while nobodies like Erik Christensen were 29-of-55? Largely they are different skill sets :)

To be fair, that Edmonton team was pretty stacked.

Was impressed by Bowness yesterday. Usually don't buy in to what a coach says publicly, however given 2 months on the job, the buildup to yesterday must've been a bit of a challenge. Having to talk to individual players, gather info how this team and leadership conducted in years passed, and then corroborate the info and make sound decisions... Must've not been easy.

I didn't love everything he said, however it's not because of his doing. he was basically part of the (ongoing) clean up crew of the mess from the previous coach regime and current gm. For that Bowness deserves props.

Now hopefully his addition leads to a stark difference in on ice play and results. Imo that's the highest box to check on his checkmark list.

I just listened to Mark's 23 thought interview. I think it's clear he had enough of Maurice prior to him leaving. He keeps bringing up not knowing why things needed to be done and how he's looking forward to understanding why they do things under Rick. Seems like Maurice wasnt as good a communicator as he appeared.

I heard that too.

It reminds me of an interview Jacob Trouba gave the New York Post during his first season with the Rangers.

He said in Winnipeg there was a lot of confusion associated with their defensive system.

This brings up a larger issue as to why Maurice wasn't fired earlier - management would have heard this in the previous season exit interviews. Pretty sure Scheif was referring to Lowry because he sure didn't show any respect for that guy...

I really think people are underestimating how much this new staff is going to impact performance. I expect:
A better Blake Wheeler without the c responsibility. He will still have a letter, but an a will definitely let him focus on his game
A simpler, more sensible d structure that's easy to follow and has less holes
More understanding of identity and roles
More accountability.

I feel really excited for this season
