Regarding the overpaying to come here argument: I am pretty sure Olli Jokinen was overpaid back in the days. At least I remember it being the common opinion "definitiely overpaid a bit but doesn't matter as it's only 2 years and they have so much cap space anyway".

I don't think so. He was the top UFA C available that year. If he was overpaid it was only by the amount that UFAs typically get through the auction process. To get the player you generally need to make the top offer so it is always going to trend to the high end of the range.

They're one game above .500 and don't have great underlying numbers, they're definitely not world beaters at the moment. Minnesota would have been the better example to use.

- Names ov was a good pick up and signed here for 2 years because he had played for Bowness coach b4
- Baron was a steal in the Copp trade as well as Lambert
- Best trade and signing was Nino reider …. I thought we picked him up for a 2nd rounder at the deadline and we were going to recoup that 2 nd rounder the following year as he was signed for the extra year… I did not think he would be willing to stay for 3 more years at the same$$… He was a top 7-8 pick in his draft year.

Tampa isn't the team they used to be. Their forward depth is abysmal, with Point injured they have Nick Paul and Mitchell Chaffee on their 2nd line.

Agree but i think Chevy's best trade was Vilardi, Iafallo, Kupari and a second round pick for Dubois. LA couldn't get rid of Dubois fast enough and got nothing for Dubois.

One poster I saw said that PLD is playing much better this season than his point totals would indicate. So far, Caps haven't got much out of him but he still may flourish there.

Vilardi alone could be good return on PLD. Or he could continue to have injury issues until he gets worn out. Kupari still can't find the net and Iafallo was basically a cap dump, though still useful. The best piece in that deal could end up being the 2nd. I like Freij's potential and we need LHD in the system.

I'd say his best trade was Copp for Morgan Barron, Brad Lambert, Elias Salomonsson and Thomas Milic. All futures except for Barron and he was young. But a lot of potential there.

That was a good trade yes i agree but when everyone knew Dubois wanted out, to get 3 players back that are all playing in our starting lineup that is a homerun of a trade especially when the team is playing so good.

They srent but they were comfortably in the playoffs until they faced us. They lost their number 1C that game which really hurts. We've seen how we've looked without Scheifele.

Lol that's one ufa contract. Maybe you can include Mason too. But really the Jets aren't huge players in UFA which avoids them from getting bad long term contracts. Players like Ladd declined the Jets in 2016 or Frolik previously, and supposedly Alzner.

This is where "Winnipeg" may be an indirect advantage of avoid signing bad UFA deals. I've seen many posts of Winnipeg not being a UFA destination, and at the same time, shit on the UFA market or July 1 contracts signed. So if most of the long term UFA deal suck and Winnipeg isn't on the short list of attractive teams, think more should be fine with that

You are right, there aren’t many. I might include Schmidt in the same vein. He wasn’t a UFA but his acquisition, with his contract was a result of not being able to get a NHL UFA defender. He was overpaid and it still cost a 3rd.

I think Chevy does a good job not losing his damn mind on UFAs as well. We always hear how the Jets were in on players but wouldn’t offer enough. Once in a rare while we get to hear an example like Monahan last year or Ladd waaay back when, ok so there might only be two examples. Monahan will probably be good for a year or two but he has quite the injury history that doesn’t make me confident he will be worth. $5.5m X 5. Once you sign that contract it becomes an anchor on all other options that may come at 2C.

Where Winnipeg does well is when they trade for a player and they extend here later (ie nino, demelo, vlad, stastny for example). I think Winnipeg does adequately in the mid level player market.

Helped us from some bad deals with current Jets hitting UFA also. IIRC both Ladd and Monahan passed on big deals from Chevy to go elsewhwre

Sure, under the circumstances it was a great return. It would be nice to be able to say the trade was good without the qualifier of "under the circumstances". Just like it would be nice to be able to say that Stanley skates well, without the "for his size" qualifier.

I think that the Copp trade is a rare instance of that from Chevy. He was going to leave as a UFA and got the TD return. Leaving as a FA is pretty common at the TD, so no qualifier needed.

While PLD did not pan out in LA but if it did that would have been a good trade for the Kings.
#1 Center for a top 6 forward and 2 bottom six forwards at basically the same SC. I give credit to Blake he took a swing and missed but at least he tried and that worked out great for the Jets.
Speaking of PLD I watch a Caps and while he did not show up on the scoresheet he made nice plays and looked ok for now plus the Caps are off to a good start.
I hear Barry Trotz is ready to make some moves if things don't improve in Nashville ... time for Chevy to sniff around?
