I guess I'm surprised at the insane start, but the jets were at minimum were going to be a competent team this year.
A team with Helle, Scheif, Connor, Ehlers, Lowry and Morrissey has a high regular season floor. No idea what the ceiling is though.

As far as Chevy overpays, he's been completely within normal GM bounds.
Shock of shocks, an NHL GM opens up the chequebook for below average middle-pairing D-Men to try and address a positional weakness, and overpays an aging power forward who served as your captain and was the one of the biggest boosters when the team moved from Atlanta.

The one area I think Chevy has really done well is build up our lineup depth to the point of being a team that can run 4 effective lines. We may be short on superstars other than Helly but we have a deep middle class of players.
Same idea with Iafallo. He was the cap dump part of the PLD trade, but while overpaid he is still an effective bottom 6 player, who can be slotted into other parts of the lineup. His bad contracts are not just wasted money.
Wheeler wasn't over paid. He was coming off back to back 91 point seasons and was our best forward at the time. Most legacy UFA contracts aren't worth the AAV in their final couple years. That is the price you pay to hold onto your stars. Both Schiefele and Helly will likely be overpaid in 5-6 years, as will Ehlers and Connor if we are able to re-sign them.
The one bad one I'll give Chevy is the Bogo contract. He never came close to living up to it but Chevy was able to move him for another dissapointing dmen that rebound his game here so it worked out for him.

What about Forbort? He was signed for 1 mil. You not liking him is not the point. He was paid 2.8 mil the year before and 2 mil, with an AAV of 3 mil, the year after. Looks like Chevy got him cheap.
Wheeler was not overpaid. He was signed for a little too long.
Agreed. Chevy has walked the line pretty well. He does have his work cut out for him over the next couple years, with lots of important players with contracts coming due.

I was uncertain of both the floor and the ceiling. Floor might have been last 4 games of 24 and lowered because of the departure of Dillon. Ceiling might have been 110 pt regular season. Then there was uncertainty about coaching.
That's the nature of the business with guaranteed contracts. Schiefele and Helly are signed too long as will Ehlers and Connor be, and then in a couple years we will likely to re-sign Morrissey for way too long as he is pushing his mid 30's. Most top tier players are paid too long if they have an agent half worth their salt.
Yup, no GM bats 100 on contracts as no one has a crystal ball, but Chevy tends to have a good read on things. He'll be tested over the next few years trying to balance the number of legacy deals he's comfortable with and the through their prime deals for guys like Snerg, Cole and Vilardi.
Yup, they just have to find one gm out there willing to make a poor bet cough Trotz cough.
I think the Jets' roster has been generally underrated the past couple of seasons. Chevy took a high-bubble team and added a bunch of quality and depth, especially at F.
Adding Vilardi, Nino and Namestnikov along with the arrival of Perfetti really strengthened the top 3 lines.
The 4th line has gone from a weakness to a real strength with the addition of Barron, Iafallo and Kupari.
On D, Samberg has emerged as a defensive stalwart. Miller was a sneaky good acquisition.
Overall, the Jets have a very balanced and deep forward group now, and the D is good enough. It's just that many pundits and fans didn't really recognize the transformation and quality.
Beyond that, Bowness brought in a very good 5v5 defensive system that the Jets are implementing effectively. They are really well-connected in the system now.
And, Hellebuyck is still Hellebuyck.

One of the reasons I think Chevy has done as well as he has with contracts as he has much more job security then most GMs. I don't think most GMs give a shit about years 6-8 in a contract, because if they don't have a lot of team success in the next 5 years they won't be around to worry about it. If they do have a lot of success they will be forgiven and they will just deal with bad contracts as they have to, Or they move on because they have proven to be successful.

Derek Forbort signed a 1X1M contract with the Jets and then went to the Bruins as a free agent and signed a 3X3
Blake Wheeler was an elite RW and captain of the Jets having just completed back to back 91 point seasons. He was signing his legacy contract and was going to get that or more on the free market.

- Baron was a steal in the Copp trade as well as Lambert
- Best trade and signing was Nino reider …. I thought we picked him up for a 2nd rounder at the deadline and we were going to recoup that 2 nd rounder the following year as he was signed for the extra year… I did not think he would be willing to stay for 3 more years at the same$$… He was a top 7-8 pick in his draft year.

When Chevy makes moves at the TDL, he needs to just keep his 1st round pick off the table, because when he does he usually makes really good value trades.
