I like the change.

I predicted Blake would not return as the Captain. Too bad they couldn't get him moved for his sake but this is the next best step. Honestly, I don't know how much it changes anything but its a start.
wonder if it has any bearing on PLD staying, even the smallest.

interesting that an article headlined by chipman looking to drum up 22-23 sales, preceded this news (which i think is seen in good light by jets fans?)

Yes, I’m pretty sure the elder statesman role can be distinguished from active captaincy quite easily. It’s an obvious move and no discredit to Wheeler. It’s possibly of more significance that they’re clearly not moving directly to Scheifele.

After last season Scheifele doesn't deserve an A this season let alone a C but they will give him another chance I think. New coaching and a second chance for Mark probably.

Well they will present it as him relinquishing it for him to save face whether that is how it happened or not.

I don't think there was any chance Blake was coming back as the captain after the public roasting he took last season even if the team wanted it. Its why he was looking to get out. Now I assume the team wanted a change too but there is not way Blake was signing up for another season as C.

I wouldn't be at all surprised if Wheeler himself says something like it was his decision and that he feels it's best that the younger players take a more active leadership role. Wheeler knows his time is coming to an end with the Jets and maybe the NHL in general... he had his shot as a leader... now it's time for others to see if they want it. I can also see the multiple assistants this season, but then picking one to be the captain 2 years from now.

Going to be awkward but it makes some sense
Wonder if they'll trade him now
they wouldnt have had to do all this if they were going to trade him. obviously there's no market for him so they're stuck and he agreed to relinquish the C (because what else is he going to say). My biggest fear is that he pouts all year and puts up 30 pts. I'm guessing they have an agreement to move him at the deadline for best offer if we're out of it.

I cannot see Wheeler and his huge ego sticking around if he demoted. He’s probably being traded or retiring. I certainly do not like to see Shiefele get the C but you never know with this franchise. It would be great to see Connor get an A and let the rest of the players earn the right to become team leader in the upcoming season.

Who knows but in the end I think it is past time the torch was passed on anyhow. I'm curious if Scheifele retains his A.

Wheeler won't be much easier to move at the TD as he will still under contract for next season as well. The following TD will be the easiest time to move him.

While many thought this was needed, it is quite another thing to see the org actually remove the C from such a long standing player. It shows me they are serious about correcting the room which is good.

I see Morrissey, Lowry as foresure in the mix. Other then that I'm not sure.
I'd think at this point, Wheeler doesn't want the C - so more likely he is giving it up over losing it - purely speculation of course.

As for who ends up with the A's, I agree that Lowry and JoMo are almost a shoe-in and the third could be a number of players including guys that might surprise us - I can see the qualifiers needing to be embedded Jet players on long term contracts who have been successful regardless of the current room, have shown themselves to be hard workers (Bowness will want this) and have influence / respect within the org - I'd include 27 and 81 on that list.

OTOH, there is a lot of risk taking letters away from a players like Scheif and Wheels if they feel they should be wearing one - I think Wheels would gladly give it up but not sure about 55.

Very interesting though - and the results will be very telling in how the org is approaching the season and whether they want to drive accountability or pacify.

A - Morrissey - next in line to be C IMO
A - Lowry
A - Wheeler/Scheifele (not both)
A - Schmidt

Yes it was time for a change. I didn't think there was any way to bring Blake back as the captain after last season. Mark will probably be in the mix as an A since I assume they don't want to give up on him in this market yet. They give Mark a chance to move forward with the new leadership group is my guess.

I agree.
