I'm back to posting my own post-game thoughts - just not on Twitter,
doing it on BlueSky in an attempt to slowly move away from the
hate-machine.
Quick thoughts as I peruse this thread: the Avs had both a lot of odd-man rushes and sustained pressure from bad breakouts or attempts at clearing the zone - and that's how they poured on a ton of shots on Hellebuyck (73CA at 5v5 alone!!!), although not many of them high-danger (until it was special teams).
The first can be cleaned up by ensuring the 3F isn't hesitating when they are supporting their pinching defence. I saw so many instances of players beginning a curlt the blueline thinking a Pionk or Morrissey or DeMelo (or whoever) was going to keep the puck in and they could get into the open-ice in the slot - only for it to not happen and for COL's speed to kill them through the neutral zone. Maybe we can attribute this a lot to nerves, as I have heavy doubts that Bowness would intend for that kind of play in his system (for players not named Scheifele or Connor, of course).
The bad breakouts and failed attempts at clearing the defensive zone are the same problem - COL's fast on their forecheck and the Jets fail at presenting options for their defencemen. The middle of the ice is wide-open, but good luck finding a Winnipeg player there ready for a one-touch reception-and-pass to get out of the zone, and instead throwing it to an Avs player instead (or attempting to clear it off the boards - which just ends up hitting an Avs player, and again giving them possession). I expect the 5-4 pairing to be better as maybe Dillon's got his goal of hitting everything that moves in this game, so that Pionk isn't his usual chaotic self. 2 needs that forward option to pass to, whereas 44 can escape pressure himself (more often than not). The 64-54 is where you need to insert Schmidt or Miller instead of Stanley - 64 had a nice little streak going but he's not looked good for three straight games including tonight, and was exposed by the Avs by forcing Samberg to make the plays instead from his off-hand.
Finally: agree with folks that Toffoli wasn't great, especially when he's taking
shots like these. The 27-23-73 line is the obvious mismatch for COL's deteriorating depth - yet they didn't manage much against a trio of Wood-Colton-Kiviranta and got outshone by Mittelstadt and his line (who absolutely eviscerated the 81-55-13 line and both 44-2 and 5-4 pairings). This line is primed to be the difference maker, IMO - if everything else goes "according to plan", then it's 27-23-13 that should be scoring. Can't count on Lowry to always outscore MacKinnon, nor for Namestnikov's (and his line's) only 5v5 slapper to be a goal. (They should replace Gustafsson for Perfetti, btw.)
