Post-Game Talk: Jets 4 - Coilers 3

I think it's the absence of Pionk that's driving most of Morrissey's extra time. Not sure how much tinkering with the bottom pair will matter.

Morrissey is now 3rd in the league in 5v5 ice time, and 5th in all-strengths TOI.

He looked pretty sharp in the OT last night, though...but yeah they gotta let him catch his breath.

Making his case for a Norris nomination. Seems other players seem to be getting more noise though.

Pionk means more to this team than some think. No matter how you look at it he's our second best defenseman offensively and it's making Morrissey have to play more minutes.

You don’t think the team’s play is concerning? They haven’t looked this sloppy all year. Lose badly to the Canucks and barely beat the Oilers without their 2 best players.

This team isn’t so good that they can just flip the switch. Last 2 games have looked closer to the team that played in last season’s playoffs than the team we watched all season.

So now on 2 days rest they’ll come home and torch the Sabres making everything golden again until they play teams playing with playoff intensity and fine tuning their playoffs style game.
I mean the canucks game most of the team was actually fine but the few bad players were really bad and that included helle pretty much every chance they got went into the net

this game we pretty much gave them nothing for the first 40 mins but 2 bad goals allowed let them to stay around, we really should have had a big lead going into the 3rd, we had like 5 odd man rushes in the 2nd we didn't convert on

Yeah we have sagged a bit but not by as much as what people are saying. The biggest issue is Helle and the pp are going through a bit of a rough patch.

The good news is that we still need to get wins to stay ahead of the Stars. They have some games in hand and we still play 1 more time so we still need to keep winning.

The recent concerns / struggles IMO are, 3rd line contribution, Helle letting in some softies, and the PP has gone ice cold. Nowhere near panic time yet, but we'll need all 3 of those to improve for the playoffs.

The butt hurt over mcbrokens injury is quite hilarious.
It was an absolute nothing burger of a play.
Reminds me of Dillon assassinating Kaprizov last year in a nothing crosscheck that happens 20 times a night.

That Oilers board is in total sky-is-falling mode. But to be fair, the Oilers have basically been the Cleveland Browns of the NHL since Pronger left nearly 20(!) years ago.

I can't imagine how many heads would explode here if we let, say, Chibrikov and Salomonsson get snapped up on fairly modest offer sheets (returning one 2nd and one 3rd round pick as compensation combined(!)) so we could sign declining 30-somethings like Jeff Skinner and Victor Arvidsson.

Ken Holland's inability to do something to fix their goaltending situation is a bit like the Pavelec situation here - except if back in 2013 the Jets had the Pens lineup and just squandered Crosby, Malkin and Letang's prime with garbage goaltending.

Nino got a beauty assist night. That was a positive. Jets have gone 70 games this year without giving Ville a single PP rep. Hopefully the homestand gets him a look.

The 3rd line's been bad since Lowry returned from injury.

Yes, but it's still not enough. The line overall isn't contributing much offensively as a group, and while that's not their primary purpose, they're not adding much else. Defensively they're not as strong as they have been in the past, their not adding physicality (outside of Lowry), or energy, etc.

I have more confidence that the 4th line will do something positive at the moment than the 3rd.

Thanks for this. Pretty much confirms the eye test.

Still a lot to work on with this team.

PP has to get moving again
Helle looks like he's getting tired, I wouldn't mind seeing a rotation at least until the last 3 or so games
Let Heinola play and maybe even Coghlan if you aren't confident in the 3rd pair. You can't run Jomo into the ground before the playoffs even start.
Third line has to man up and get going.

Agree on all of your points.
PP is off. Vilardi not up to early season form. Scheifele getting too cute with passes which have been intercepted a lot recently.
I just checked goalie stats and Hellebuyck ar 76.1%, Comrie at 23.9%. Not as skewed as I thought but Hellebuyck not as sharp so a more even distribution to season's end sounds good.
Coglan looked pretty good in his limited time, IMO but Heinola and he seem to be "forgotten".
I think that Appleton is "off" (from injury?) and that is throwing off whole line. The team as ample replacements but will coach make a move?

Yep, Cog is the first guy I'd put in. He looked very good in limited opportunities.

Missing Pionk is a factor for sure. Partly because of jomo ice time and Pionk's offense.

DeMelo seems banged up. Namestikov was pulled. Appleton looks hurt. Maybe time to rotate some guys in, Kupari 4C, Barron replace apple,

Give salo a game on RD 3rd pair. Give Lambert a game if Names is hurt.

Rest helle a bit. The season load is starting to show.
