Yes - making their contracts all 2-3 years long
Yea, short term deals that allow for their prospects to develop. You can argue Ed could make the jump this year, and likely only Ed. Johansson likely needs at least 1 additional season in the AHL before he starts to push for a spot. Wallinder and Pelinka round out their next top defensive prospects and they likely need a year to 3 before they push for a spot. It makes perfect sense signing vets to fill in in the interim

Yzerman baby, what are you doin. It will look even worse next year when they have to pay Mo an actual salary.

I don't know if it's just a tough market to sign UFAs or what but that's tough sledding.

i think people forget what he did before the drafting came through in Tampa. Callahan, Carle, Downie, Purcell, Kubina. There were a lot of questionable deals thrown around to veteran help to assist with promoting the young players. The issue is I’m not sure Detroit has a Kucherov or Vasi sitting in the minors.

If only we could've seen Petry play for the Devils in his SCF form...

He hasn’t been the same player since this

To be fair to Petry, he, along with Chiarot and Holl have all looked bad through the first 2 games and Lalonde seems to really like Chiarot for who knows what reason. Maatta was somehow a healthy scratch in game 1 and he is easily our 3rd best defender of players on the current Wings roster.

The bottom 4 consists of Holl, Maatta, Petry, Gostibehere and Chiarot... that is beyond terrible. I guess Holl and Maatta could make a "passable" 3rd pair but none of these players can play on the 2nd pair. Maybe they'll prove us wrong and be better as the season goes along but considering all these defensemen were players other fanbases couldn't wait to get rid of (ok maybe not Maatta)... these first 2 games have shown exactly why... and we are led to believe Edvinsson isn't better than any of these guys, lol.

On the flip side, the forwards are looking great.

Maatta can easily play 2nd pair. He did so last year with Hronek who had his best season ever and Maatta was a big reason why.

Holl isn't great, but also isn't nearly as bad as was advertised.

Granted... 2 game sample.

He and Chiarot both solid buyout candidates.

They may wait a year on Chiarot, though.
Really nice that Hughes turned Chiarot and a 2nd into Alex Newhook.

Petry is brutal.
Give aways, bad body position when defending, unforced unnecessary icings galore, dumb penalties late in games, etc etc
Hab fans thanked Hextall for taking. He stunk in Pittsburg.
I was shocked Yzerman took him.
But he won't last. He's done

It's not so much about having a Vasi and Kucherov in the system as much as it is guys like Gourde, Palat, Cirelli, Gudas, Johnson. All those veterans you mentioned lost their jobs to the kids and the kids were better for it.

Detroit's system is looking pretty good even if no one is looking like a future 100 point scorer or Vezina winner. Mazur, Kasper, Danielson, Soderblom and Berggren are going to be battling it out with Fischer, Kostin, Copp, Perron and Veleno for forward spots. Wallinder, Edvinsson, Johansson and Sandin-Pelikka are going to battle Gostisbehere, Holl, Chiarot and Maatta for spots. Whoever is better will in theory get the spot.

I think they have a lot of these types of players, agreed. I really like a lot of Detroit's depth pieces.

I believe a lot of people are sleeping on them this year tbh.

Yea, there’s only 8 defensemen who have played so far this year that are older than him, and of those only Letang and Burns are still playing at a high level. It’s not that surprising a nearly 36 year old Petry would be a bottom pairing guy by now
been bottom pairing guy for last two seasons .....now he is a 7 or 8 depth injury filler

Honestly, he looked awful in the first two games. He skates like he’s in quicksand, and he takes really stupid, momentum killing penalties. Maatta is a better player than him by a significant margin.

Outside of Maatta, Walman and DeBrincat, I can’t think of much that Yzerman has done (drafting aside, and even then, I have some serious concerns) as GM that I’d consider a success, and even then, it’s too early to rule on DeBrincat. If the Wings don’t make the playoffs by 2025, he should be let go.

Obviously the Yzerplan hinged solely on Petry being a top-pairing defender. And now that he's been scratched for one game it's all over...everything, completely ruined, kaput.

Yep, I just spoke with my source and he said, Steve is currently in a ball in the corner, because he promised everyone that Petry was going to play 25 minutes a night and provide just shy of Nick Lidstrom defence.

that 2021 Cup run took a lot out of all the vets, they're all either retired or dropped off hard

Covid and isolating/cramming games in, a lot of them played while being hurt, it took a big toll on them

Jeff Petry is back in the lineup and has picked up a pair of assists.

If only he could play against Pittsburgh every night.
