Confirmed with Link: Jeff Petry (50% retained) traded to DET for Gustav Lindström and conditional 4th-round pick in 2025 (later of Detroit or Boston's pick)

I dunno, the series of events that led to all this happening is honestly pretty contrived and hard to realistically foresee. He's got 15 slots and if he had the other 6 Canadian teams plus the west coast teams on it, that's already 12 or 13 spots taken. I think it probably made sense to leave the Habs off the no trade list. With 15 slots you can't protect against every negative outcome and I think it was reasonable to expect there was an extremely low chance of Montreal reacquiring him, and that if they did it would be to flip in this way anyway.

He got traded away from a rebuilding Canadiens team to an aging but still competing Penguins team, the likelihood that the Penguins would go into summer 2023 trying to compete and specifically be targeting the reigning Norris winner at the same position as Letang & Petry, the Habs would find a fit in a three-way trade with the Sharks due to Mike Hoffman being untradeable, and that Petry going back to Montreal was the cap move that made a trade for a resurgent Erik Karlsson work is not something anyone could have reasonably projected or planned for.

Yeah but you can do this with a million scenarios and considering his state of mind when he actually did end up traded, it's not like the left on a bad note.

My point is more that Montreal shouldn't have to take a worst deal because he doesn't want to be there. If you're adamant on not wanting to be in Montreal, put them on your list or report. I personally would have preferred to play him as opposed to getting this return/using a retention spot but if Montreal actually likes the player they got back (which seems to be the case according to a reliable poster) then it is what it is.

In short, if Petry did try to game his NTC, I have zero sympathy for him and I wouldn't bend over to his will and I'm someone who's 1000% into the human side of things/understanding that players have concerns that go far beyond hockey. But that would be something I'd have to put my foot down on.

I don't really care one way or the other as this is more of a nothing burger to me. I would have liked a better return and would have kept him if that's all we could get but at the same time it's just better to trade him then have an unhappy player when we have all these young D's incoming.

I thought for sure Petry would be traded before the season started and I got to think Hughes is not done although goalies might be tougher to move so they could just waive some goalies if there's zero interest in any of them.

Most of which are of the dartboard variety. I guess the good news is we can move some of them in an attempt to bring up the value of our redundant players of which we have a handful. Offer 2/3 of them to Arizona with Gallagher as is.

now that is thinking

It really seems like a favour to Petry which is nice I guess lol.

I guess he had half the league on his no trade list. So our hands were pretty tied there. Hopefully there’s something more to Lindstrom.
It was nice of him. Maybe he's trying to strengthen his (already good) reputation as a player-friendly GM? Definitely not a trade that cements his reputation as a wheeler-dealer.

All the complaints about the retain for next year is anoying AF lol.

Mtl has about 13M of cap space next year, assuming a 4M cap raise, with Petry retained.

That's with only Widman as a UFA, Barron and Xhekaj as RFA.

We can still sign everyone and dream about Nylander
Not to mention Edmundson is off the books next season. No retention would have required games played here at a decent level which I guess was out of the question.

Underwhelming but necessary if the idea was to get rid of him. Expecting the same for DeSmith now.

So in the end, it's 2nd and Légaré for getting rid of Hoffman, Pitlick and keeping 50% of Petry.
Don't forget Desmith and whatever HuGo scrapes up for him. ;)

This is in line with what I expected (not much), and it turns the original trade as "ok". At least we managed to trade Petry.

We spent some cap we don't need for a 2nd, a 4th and spare parts.

If Petry wasn't willing to play in Montreal then he would have had Montreal on his NTC. 'Petry didn't want to be here so the return is lowered' sounds like hogwash to me.

I'd have played him if that's the best we could get.
He did not expect to be in Montreal

I like that the Habs got Gustav Lindstrom. 24y/o RHD with decent NHL experience. He's a good add here. 4th round pick is a little bit of gravy. I like this trade. Good return for Petry. Especially if he really wants to play in Detroit, as has been rumored. Solid. Should make the Habs a better team moving forward.

Does anyone know the conditions on the 4th round pick?

The conditional 4th is likely the best we could have got for Hoffman if we kept him until the deadline.

Why does it have to be special????

Look at the big picture in this trade and the series of trades that led to this. Overall a master class by Hughes, and who can't see this absolutely are whiners and are a detriment to the quality of this board.

Always with the ad hominem.

I find this trade meh and don't really care, but the idea that people who disagree with you are "whiners" just goes to show that many people who defend the team are usually the toxic ones that decrease the quality of the board.

Doubt it. I think more along the lines of Wideman or Kovacevic. Because at initial glance, Lindstrom makes them expendable more than he does Barron and Mailloux.

I don't know a ton about Lindstrom, but I'm getting the vibe from Detroit fans that he's pretty bad, and that his acquisition was the equivalent of receiving literally nothing.
