Ah yes, he’s got that Leaf stink that won’t come out
It just gets worse…

This man gives Kevin Lowe a run for his money when it comes to arrogance. Atleast Lowe built a finals team from scratch without a drafted generational talent, and won a bunch of cups as a player to earn some of that arrogance. This f***ing bum did nothing.

They’re not a fluke occurrence. Most teams get at least one good player out of the later rounds every so often. Who’s the last good player we got outside the first round? Brodziak?

This team is abysmal at drafting which means we consistently have to rely on trades and signings and we aren’t great there either.
Late picks are largely dependent on development, that's what I mean as fluke occurrence. Chia got flamed on this forum, seven plus later his record started looking pretty good, but he was 50% in the first round and drafted McDavid lol. Many of his late picks developed in other organizations as well

Holland/Wright made three good picks in 4 chances in the first, each player increasing in value after draft +1, which is what everyone is looking for -- in a pool of the most scouted players. Is it a scouting problem?

We also saw the Oilers unwilling to commit minutes to Broberg, Strudwick wanted Kulak traded to make room, and they rushed the hell out of Holloway, he acclimatized to the AHL for 70 mins before he got called up. Our two best prospects.

How is he arrogant when he was thrust into the position and never even wanted to be GM? His decisions have aged very poorly, but he said over and over he didn't want to be GM.

The Captain Hindsight armchair GM'ing that people post ad nauseam on this forum, on the other hand, is really tiresome.

We wouldn't have to keep playing Captain Hindsight if we had a few Captain Foresights in the front office.

I don't see how that's Jackson's fault though. From what I recall of his interviews around the time, they sounded more like team decisions. And, I'm not sure how it usually works, but having an inexperienced interim GM during that period was really not ideal. I guess it was a combination of the cup run, Holland's expiring contract, and needing a GM immediately afterward before they decided on Bowman.

Right, which means they should've had their new GM ready from the get-go instead of what they ended up doing. They put a man in an important position who was in no way qualified to do that job and here we are. It's a failure all around.

The guy knew a thing or two about winning ;)

In retrospect it’s pretty easy to see Bowman was actually the guy and they were just waiting for official clearance to hire him… I’m sure he was consulted on free agency.

Not sure if that makes me feel better or worse.

I still come back to the pro scouts. Henrique… meh… I still have time for his vet (increasingly vet unfortunately) game.

But Arvidsson and Skinner have been total flops… knowing that neither of them would sniff PP1, how is it that the pro scouting would even allow Jackson to spend cash on both of them prior to locking up our youth?…

Jackson was just trying to move and shake, if he’s fed crap info, you gotta place some blame on the chef.

I feel like Holloway for one would still be in Edmonton if we’d been as patient with Holland as he was with our team…

lol no he didn't
Ryan Smyth , Pisani, Jason Smith, Laraque, Moreau were all here before Lowe arrived

Cmon man, give credit where it's due. He brought in the biggest pieces in the run in Pronger and Roloson, drafted our leading scorer in Hemsky, and was GM for like 5 years before that season. Sure, not every single player in the org was his acquisition, but find me a GM who that applies to. That was Lowes team through and through.

He kinda did. Pronger, Peca, Spacek, Stoll, Torres, Samsonov, Dvorak, Roloson were all Kevin Lowe moves.
That's not "scratch"...yes he made GREAT moves in 2005-06, but he took over a perennial playoff team that Sather built and added pieces

I love watching so many posters go from summer of Jackson to him being a fraud, maybe fans aren’t that smart after all

that didn't change under Lowe...then when the "small market" excuses ran out after the 2004 lockout, he made the playoffs once in 3 years as GM
That's true they had the money after the lockout, but the Edmonton stigma was still a real thing when trying to attract free agents to Edmonton. Pronger, Peca, Samsonov, Spacek, Tarnstrom all left after one season and the biggest free agent signing over the next 5 years was Sheldon Souray.

I know Lowe did a lot of brain-dead things in his time as GM, but he also did some very good things that cannot be discounted because of revisionist history or just a flat out dislike of the guy.

and who's responsible for that stigma? people say Pronger but that's B.S...players want to play where they can win and he traded Pronger for magic beans that immediately signaled a mini-rebuild
then traded heart-and soul Smyth 2 years later that signaled a bigger re-build

he was average...some good, some bad... but he's the main reason the Decade of Darkness occurred with bad signings, bad trades and the hiring of Tambo

Lowe was a great GM during that post lockout era and found a starting goalie which our current GM has failed to do lmao. Peca, Roloson, and Pronger were game changing deals. Can't really blame Lowe for prongers personal issues imo.

Will always like him for sticking it up to Burke too. We did start the decade of darkness with him but that was a needed tank and was planned. Just the timing was bad cause all those drafts were not the greatest. He also got us back a farm team in his time as POHO. Tambo was a major fail as a hire though and screwed it up even more though.

I would disagree with that. The main reason that started our spiral down was our franchise player deciding he wanted out after one year, and pretty much every player acquired for that SC run following suit.

Now, not having a contingency plan and going into panic, scramble mode once Pronger wanted out was definitely on Lowe, and once the decision was made to re-build through the draft was made, the actual execution of those draft picks was pretty bad as well.

If Pronger stays and plays out his 5 year deal he signed with Edmonton, we don't spiral as bad as we did, not even close.
