Edit: The Emberson trade hasn't been awful either actually.

There is a larger context imo.

We gave up Ceci and 3rd to get Emberson, and lost Holloway for a third. Ceci and Holloway for Emberson is not so hot.

Looking at the whole, keeping Broberg and Holloway was clearly the best option, but Jackson created a financial crisis on July 1st that made it impossible. Had we just traded Broberg and Holloway on July 1st we would have gotten much more than a 2nd and 3rd.

It was brutal mismanagement

That was his biggest mistake imo.

Jackson traded depth for futures, and we had just acquired enough depth to compete. We let go of several players without replacing them and now we are back to old roster issues with no flexibility to fix them. Three years of steps backwards, had just enough depth for two seasons imo

He also showed he didn't understand the roster by allocating money to Jeff Skinner. That was an inexperienced fantasy hockey move. Anyone think Florida would have taken JSkinner for much less than we paid? I don't think they would have answered the phone because of the type of player he is and their interest in winning.
Jeff Skinner was a piece that this team just didnt need. Primarliy because he doesnt bring an element that this team was in deseperate need of. He doesnt at all appear to be the sniper I thought he was and he doesnt really add much of anything aside from that.
He (and his $3M cap hit) has to be one of the players out the door come the new year.

On july 5th 2024 he was hailed as a mad genius on this board--now he is a bum who should be fired-That did not take long.
Not at all. Didn't like his shopping trip one bit They were weaksauce additions with our players unsigned. People tend to like most everything in July because its Canada, and well, July. Edmonton rocks in July, in summer, one of the best places to be. Not as much maybe today. heh
Any comments during summer (and in realtime I disliked the additions) needs a view of this being only a couple weeks after the Euphoria of a cup final and thinking the org is credible or something due to that. Jeff Jackson: hold my beer!

Starting to look more and more like that cup run was lightning in a bottle.

Holland might've been past his prime, but I don't even think he would've made all the panic moves that Jackson did.
Truly it doesn't seem his style. he would have erred on not being able to afford to go on a spending spree and would be correct. Holland obviously had some hits and strikes but JJ takes the cake. Worst offseason since Chiarelli is saying something.

Jackson is being exposed like Bobby Nicks was for not knowing how to do anything but hire has-beens. Complete failure from the very top down to even match last year’s roster, never mind improve it.

Jacksons moves have been horrific thus far. Team killing the way this season is rolling.

To put things in perspective, we have
Derek Ryan
Corey Perry
Ty Emberson
Drake Caggiula

All on our starting roster tonight 🤮

Now I am not a fan of JJ at all but we have 3 forwards out with injury and Emberson is coming along fine. If you think about it, the depth allows us to have some vets available to cover for those injuries.

Ken Holland was below average at his job and he's still the best GM this team has hired in like 30 years.

Cleveland Browns are the only org in sports that comes close to giving the Oilers a race.

The man hired to ensure the Oilers could re-sign McDavid is actually going to ensure that last June was the closest Connor will ever come to a cup

Holland wasn’t below average..had we kept his players like Holloway Foegele and Broberg we would be younger, faster more physical and more offensive
We went from 25 overall to 1 game away from the Cup under him
Now we seem to be regressing

Part of the regression is the lack of youth coming into the lineup because apart from the two players you mentioned (and even then they were late bloomers) he drafted absolutely nothing. Having zero players from his entire draft history is a damning indictment.

That’s not on Holland they trade our 2 best prospects
Besides, he traded a first in one of the best trades this team had made in decades (Ekholm)

But nothing from the dozens of other picks he and his scouts made. This team has struggled with the draft for decades and he didn’t help with it.
Other than XB he got value out of every first.

He hit on Broberg, Holloway and Schaefer and then paired the latter with a first for ekholm.. That's a good five years imo

Late picks are a fluke occurrence. Chia killed it in late rounds, it's rolling dice. Nill knew when he took WJohnston imo. So Holland was decent in 4/5 years. All 4 players were toolsy and raw as well, so it was scouting and projections.
