what value ? we have NONE to show for it...please read this
New York Rangers: Comparing the Stepan and Hagelin trades
This article doesn't say it was a bad trade:

This one seemed good at the time. Hagelin was a pending RFA, and the contract Anaheim gave him made fans and management alike find the trade manageable. Emerson Etem looked like a player who had tons of potential, and just needed a change of scenery.
The Rangers selected Ryan Gropp with pick 41, passing over noted talents Daniel Sprong and Oliver Kylington. Gropp’s inconsistent development, and Etem bombing out, took away from what could have been a decent trade at least.

Actually, the entire article seems concerned not with the value of the trades, but who they drafted with the picks.

miller ridley for bobby carpenter was the 3rd worst...what did miller and ridly do for the caps? nothing, and we stunk in 1987 and were going nowhere
You know, I was going to reply line by line. But then I got to this. And then the desire to respond went away. If Ridley & Miller "did nothing", then there is really nothing to discuss here. Wow. Simply WOW! Nevermind equating the loss of a Zubov to a Hagelin. Dare I ask for how long have you been watching hockey? You know what? Nevermind. Ridley and Miller did nothing for the Caps.

so far so good. No freaking homerun swings at the draft, solid best available . leverage the draft depth to get a solid pipeline . If a best available slips then maybe consider using excess picks to move up. I would avoid trading picks but would instead use roster players. Winning the lottery could light a fire under this thing!!

Yes, I agree, I felt we could get more value in return for the McD trade - spot on.

Here's the thing though: Not every trade can be a slamdunk. Not every trade can work in our favor. The McDonagh trade wasn't a steal, but it wasn't a bad trade either. You could argue it was a tad below market value, but I feel it was pretty much what the market dictates.

Compare it to Shattenkirk, Yandle, Pronger and Burns. Those returns are similar to what we got (if I take out Namestnikov and Miller).

I am happy with the trade because of the message it sends. The value wasn't great, but it wasn't bad either. I think people, me included to an extent, got their hopes up regarding the return and we didn't get it. After the great returns in the Holden/Grabner/Nash trades, we expected this one to go the same way. It didn't, but we still got fair value for what we gave up

Pretty much how I feel too. I give JG a solid A for this TDL.

Steve Yzerman clearly had a strategy before the final minutes of that deadline move. I listen to his 22 min. interview on Tampa NHL homepage last evening. And he said he can`t do such deals every year, but he said he was not all in at all when he was question about it concerning a deep cup run for Tampa and it`s certainly a definition, Steve`s own words and a quote from his interview.

I think it was a steal for the Tampa GM, opportunistic and still had most of their top 1st picks in their farm.

If you have not listen to the interview - I really recommend it by the way @Amazing Kreiderman - then u can argue, maybe if we hit this year or next in the draft, and if Tampa wins the cup we will have a second 1st pick in 2019 based on the whole value package.

My brief point is Steve had a strategy, and we end up with a conditional pick in the 2019 draft.

It`s a C trade from A-D category by Gorton, and he should waited until the summer window with both J.T. & Ryan Mc. - we did not had to pull the trigger for that particular trade at all before the deadline, and only reason if u move players before the deadline you need a great return, and I felt the return did not reflect the greatness of this particular deal.

I think the value of the trade, in particular Hejak, could be effected in JG's eyes by what his scouts think of him and Howden to an extent too. To us maybe it looks underwhelming, but maybe the scouts who just found Chytil and seemed to do real well with Andersson too were telling him Hejak is the real deal to them and Howden is a good shot at another Stepan type 2C. If thats the case and he believes them, the value looks a lot better. We'll have to wait and see how they pan out of course.

  • On building at center, "I think so, if you look at successful teams, building up the middle and back end is important.. We are reasonably confident about our future in goal, we have some nice young players there. Comfortable there with how it's going. To improve our defense and improve at center and get some young guys in here, it was important at those positions."
What Rangers GM Jeff Gorton said about the McDonagh/Miller trade and more

This guy gets it.

ok what did miller and ridley do for the caps? last time I checked the Caps have never won a Stanley cup... and with miller and ridley the caps advanced pass the 2nd round only one time.
