Maybe he has decided to move to Europe after this year. But it could be that he considered playing in Switzerland when his contract ran out. The "will almost certainly' is not definite. However, maybe that was something he considered last year before he was traded. He has picked up his game, playing well, enjoying the NHL again, motivated.

Jeff Carter reportedly set to leave the NHL at the end of the season | Markerzone.com

"A great NHL player will join our league," said NHL scout Thomas Roost on MySports. "NH L veteran Jeff Carter, Stanley Cup winner from 2012 and over 1000 games in the best league in the world, will almost certainly play in Switzerland next season. The frustrating thing about this information is that I don't know which team he's going to play for, I'm guessing Bern or Davos."

Its a beautiful country so I don't blame him. Only seen it briefly from Lake Como, but ya it seems like a heavenly place (with lots of chocolate and good looking women...).
Meh, I find it conservative, boring and overpriced. Skiing is better in France and Austria. There are hot girls all over Europe. The Swiss are to busy counting their Nazi gold to be good hosts.

But hey, to each their own.

NHL/Swiss league have a transfer agreement. Jeff Carter is under contract to an NHL team until July 1st. Jeff Carter nor anyone that represents Jeff Carter, or anyone from a Swiss team nor representing a Swiss team may engage in any talks until said time that Jeff Carter is an UFA and not under contract to an NHL team.

The only two links that come up when you google this is this forum, and markerzone.com. If this was actually a thing, then someone in the know would have picked it up already.

And.... families never wants to relocate?

Usually with young kids in school......no

I'm not dismissing this but I am just saying this is highly unlikely, especially considering Carter just said the Pens rejuvenated his love for the game and wants to continue to play. I was basing that off of either with Pittsburgh or at the very least the NHL

You can't sign a contract but I don't think you're not allowed to talk contracts. I only skipped through the transfer agreement when I read it but I don't think you're not allowed to talk. NHL teams do that as well.

Roost is scouting for Biel and NHL Central Scouting. So what happened is probably that Carter was offered to Biel but they missed out. Roost then used his NA network to verify that Carter is indeed heading to Switzerland and that it was a Swiss team beating them out. Would be a logical explanation for why Roost was confident enough to break the news.

He's made his money.

I'd live in Switzerland if I could. North America blows.
Nothing like playing in the show. This threads ridiculous.

Carter's already won a cup, he's accomplished as much as he's going to accomplish. Of I was him I'd go play in Switzerland in a heart beat.
Instead of the NHL... No. Maybe after he is done and can't play in the league. He ain't leaving if he doesn't have to.

Why did a lot of european soccer stars choose to play in the MLS when they could have made considerably more money playing in Europe? For the new experience. When you have made a fortune and won the championships many wants to try new things while they are still able to. I do not see why this should be different for other athletes.
A lot of that is tied to growing their brand. I can't think of many guys who left top clubs in Europe for a pay cut. Some of the designated players in the MLS are paid crazy money. Insigne is making 3 to 4x what Napoli offered him, on a long-term deal. This is a captain of a respected team, who was just a starter in Euro Cup final.

Now, will bigger names maybe come over for less money than they could make at mid to lower table EPL clubs occasionally. But, guys rarely leave CL clubs in the top 4 or 5 leagues on massive wages to take a paycut in the MLS.

That is not Bern, Bern is not located at a lake.

This rumour actually makes a lot of sense. From what I have read about Carter he is really a family person. There is literally no place where the quality of life is better than in Switzerland. It is really really safe, the distances are really short and he can be home in his own bed literally every single night - he also will not have to fly anywhere in the country, every away game is by bus and the furthest he will have to travel is 6 hours (if he signs in Davos - otherwise the max might be 3-4 hours).
Also Roost is usually very good connected and reliable.

Have a look at the places he could end up:

Maybe you are right now about MLS. But I am pretty shure it was different some years ago. Anyway, Jeff Carter has a salary of only 2 mill. this year. Good but not massive. And he is UFA. Will probably not be offered more next year. Maybe less.

Too many factors that make this seem really unlikely.

-Carter himself said he wants to play a few more years and I doubt he was referring to going to play in a random European league.

-He's still really good in the NHL and has opportunities to win another cup.

-He's not from Europe and has a family in the States.

-others already stated He's under contract in the NHL and can't negotiate until July.

Now if he was Swiss and definitely slowing down to sub par play...I could buy this.

Not sure where he ends up but if he wants to continue his career the NHL still offers him the best place to play. If the price is right he can sign with the Pens and be part of the Sid, Geno, Letang 3 year run for the roses.

Looks like his kids are 5 and 6, which is a perfect time to do it. You can homeschool with relative ease at that age, it's not like you have to teach chemistry and Greek philosophy to a 15-year-old. The kids are so young that they make new social connections effortlessly, and they're young enough to organically learn a new language which they will have for the rest of their lives. Meanwhile they're living in one of the safest and healthiest places in the world, with a very high standard of living, and within a day's train ride of the great European cities. Meanwhile Daddy is home almost every night and never goes more than a couple of hours away at the longest.

It's a pretty idyllic lifestyle move. Good for him to cash in these chips while he has the opportunity.

I mean, there are worse places to get paid to play hockey. I get it, Jeff.
The value rubbing shoulders with folks who can advise on how a rich [soon to be former] athlete can benefit from the Swiss financial system, will pay far more in Carter's future than a few more bucks to bang up his body stateside. Play a couple of easy seasons, open up some shell corporations. Lots of synergies for a player to play in Switzerland. :naughty:
