The most hilarious part of this is that Knoblauch uses a zone, so we are going back to system everyone was blaming for the record.

Woody just ditched the zone lol It's a surrealist clown world in this organization
And 2 guys behind the bench now, one is essentially a minor league guy and the other is essentially a car salesman in his post player days.

Let's hope Katz has got it right this time.

You didn’t hear him. He uses zone but more aggressively in the D zone and much faster out of the zone. Woody was zone but passive

I think KK is a lot like JW. He’s a smart hockey guy that can read and adjust. Can communicate with players and has great potential. JW is not done in this league at all I believe (although I felt he was done here and needed to be changed out). I believe JW and Dave M had their legs cut out from under them from within the dressing room. KK May get a bit more leeway as the cut man is his guy. I am just so disgusted with the management of this org right now. It’s a complete disaster.
To be sure, management has not been the worst in the NHL but at the same time its been very mediocre. Like someone said about Holland, he's the best GM the Oilers have had in the last few decades but that doesn't mean he's a very good one.

What frustrates me is that the boys didn't work very hard for Tippet and not very hard for Woody either so let's hope for 3rd time lucky.

Why is holland still here? lol
The Oilers think keeping a failure on board for months while everyone rips him to shreds is less embarrassing than publicly relieving him of his duties one day and everyone forgetting about it.

I can’t believe for a minute that Tippet or Woody didn’t demand hard work as part of execution of their game plans. That’s a coaching theme that starts when you are in Tom Thumb. This gang is entitled and feels they are above hard work.

I played with players like that and I worked in business with dogs like that too. They are everywhere. Eventually you have to rid yourself of them.

I don't see a problem with Coffey as assistant coach.

It's assistant coach. Coffey has coached hockey before, and he was a skills coach too. He could work out great. If he doesn't, it's even easier to move on from him than from a head coach.

Woody ditched the zone, so whatever differences he outlined don't matter because we are back to a zone tomorrow.

I don't think the zone was ever an issue, but around here people did.

How many NHL a teams employ a player as assistant coaches that have been out of the game for 30+ years and have only coached at the U15 level, as a key assistant coach with a first year rookie mid year replacement NHL head coach? Don’t bring out bullshit about being a position coach in his CV. That means he jetted in and out and spent 40 minutes in the ice with a few players every few weeks.

I think pretty highly of Coffey. I felt this team needed a head coach with Cup experience and poise. They went the other direction with a green banana with a lot of head coaching experience but not at NHL level. Think the coach but also the players will positively lean on Coffey's experience. So much of the issue is between the ears for this team. I'm hopeful Coffey can help tap into this support.

The Katz relationship makes it murky for sure. But Oil determined Manson needed to go as well and no way they were going to find a d-coach willing to do an interim basis until end of year. Coffey was available and know this team's personnel. Martin St. Louis went from coaching Pee-Wees to NHL players. I feel Coffey to assistant coach is reasonable, all things considered.

The second point I make in what you bolded is a belief that coaching is a smaller piece of the puzzle. There have been rotating good coaches here and results are temporary. The malaise is largely a player issue imo (almost always is versus the disposable coaching voice).
We completely agree that the coach really wasnt the problem.
I am skeptical about the Leadership group and their ability to commit to structure.
No issue at all about Coffey taking over the defence.

My issues lies with the murkiness of this arrangement. The fact that Coffey is such a close advisor reporting directly to Katz. What this means is that there really is no clarity in terms of the Management structure. Having Coffey in that role provides an opportunity to bypass all the appropriate channels that were previously in place. The chain of command which existed 24 hours ago is now essentially irrelevant.
This hire effectively removes the Managerial leadership which was previously in place.
So this move muddy's the water regrading the entirety of the Management team.
In terms of Hockey Operations...this ship now (essentially) has no Captain. Its rudderless.

IMO this is an untenable arrangement and yet this is the direction the owner decided was best.

The fact that Coffey and Mcdavids old coach are being brought in is frustrating, but seeing that Schwartz is still employed really makes this go from frustrating to infuriating
I just checked hockey db. Knoblauch’s playing career at UofA overlaps very nicely with that of Schwartz. They are probably besties. He’ll never get fired now.

I think we essentially agree on the topic.

Tippet came in with a "rep" that said he really knew defensive systems but you would never know it in watching the team and I don't know what Woody ever had for a system but that didn't work out too well either.

The Oilers are not really a young team so motivation and understanding what it takes to win it all should not have been a problem but it seems that it was--- so I really don't know whether Woody got cut off at the knees in the dressing room. Well, let's hope the boys go on a big roll over the next month.

Neither me or you know what Coffey's role will be expected to be, or what expertise he brings to position. We just know the very surface level understanding of what Coffey would bring. We can assume that Jackson and others know a lot more than we do on this one.

Plus, as I said, this is an assistant position. The role that Coffey could have is wide open. I don't know what all the assistant coaches of all time have been like, but I'd bet that there have been a fair number of them similar to Coffey. There have been teams with a lot of assistant coaches. There isn't a set path for this

Count me in as not impressed with Paul Coffey, assistant NHL bench Coach with a first year, rookie NHL head coach.

Coffey has been in Katz ear for so long as an expert advisor. Probably had so many conversations where he ripped this or that coaches approach or this or that players performance in that time. Well time to put up or shut up, now the defence is on him, no where to hide. Katz will see whether he’s the expert he purports to be or just another big ego OBC that talk big and can’t back it up.

Personally I’m curious to see how this plays out. I remember when MacT/Lowe were running things and I always wondered why couldn’t we get some of the superstars like Mess or Coffey to run things instead or come in and help. That was a long time ago and I’ve since soured on OBC, but that childish hope for a glory days saviour for this team is still there a bit I guess.

Well...we know that Coffey has a direct conduit to the owner.
That reality essentially removes the proper chain of command in the organization.

Even though I think that Holland and the players failed Woodcroft (more than the other way around) I have no issue with Knobby as coach. By every account he is a young and bright coach.

I do however have an issue with installing a friend of the owner in a position like this because it affects a lot more than his role as a coach.
