I cant get over how horribly Botts managed the roster in the offseason.

Sobotka, Pommers, and Tage all took roster spots from RoR, Smith, Nylander, Oloffson...

Then...he doesnt even give the young guys a real shot until the season is in the dumpster.

Finally, he keeps a coach employed who continuously hinders the team.

Dude should've been fired yesterday.

Can you imagine where this team would've been if some lottery balls didn't bounce our way and we didn't land Dahlin? We would've been in the mid-60s again.

He won't be fired this offseason, but Botts is on the clock. I think anything short of 85+ next year and he's gone.

Or what if Skinner didn't waive his NMC to come here.

It’s gotta be playoffs or bust for him next year.

I’m still hopeful that he could still go this year

We're again in a crappy spot. Phil absolutely has to go. But Botts could be gone next summer. So what happens with his next hire when a new GM comes in (and presumably will want to pick his head coach). Ugh.

That scares the hell out of me. Who's his scapegoat this offseason?

I think our main assets to play with are:
- Risto
- Late 1st
- 1 UFA signing (not counting Skinner)

Get 2F, 1D.
Partner for Dahlin, 2C, and top 6 W

Ristolainen for sure.

Reinhart should absolutely be under similar protection to Dahlin and Eichel, and we’re at the point where even Reinhart haters have to admit he’s one of our two best wingers by a country mile.
We need Reinhart to drive his own line. Im not saying he can't but he has to be given the chance with decent linemates.

It took the two luckiest things that can happen to a GM (winning the lottery when a generational talent is on the board AND having a top line player say your team is the only place he'll go)... to mask how truly terrible Botts is, and even with that most people could see through it.

Mask? Have you looked at his career record as GM?

The Scandella trade isn’t great because the dude got vertigo and went from our best defenseman to our worst after the concussions that caused them?

Really hard on the GM for not having the clairvoyance to predict that one.

Silver lining - Smith, Nylander, and Olofsson were not exposed to this coach for long. With Botterill, I am happy with the Montour and Skinner deals, but those are far outweighed by the rest of his decisions. I normally would want to give a GM a longer leash, but Botterill has already hung himself with his two years on the job. (He acquired Scandella, Hunwick, Sheary, Sobotka, & Pominville. He mismanaged Beaulieu as an asset. He went into the season without a proven starting goalie. He kept Thompson and Middlestadt up when they clearly were in over their heads. He created a crater in the middle of our lineup by trading ROR for scraps, then failed to replace him. He left Phil Housley as coach...).

I mean if the GM was that bad then how in the world do you know if Housley is that bad? It's not like Housley took over a playoff team and then destroyed it.

No, he took over an 80-point team and made it appreciably worse in almost every way, with the roster additions made by the current GM. So yeah, Phil's bad. We see him regularly not ice his best lineup (matchups, use, pairings, lines) which is basic competence for an NHL coach.
