Rumor: Jared McCann available?

I mean yeah for sure, but I don't see them doing that. And honestly? Palat hasn't been THAT bad the last ~2 months or so. His newborn daughter was in the ICU at the very beginning of the year and ever since she came home, his play has been noticeably better. Now, his contract still sucks, but yeah. He isn't a total anchor on the ice. At least not yet.

I don’t see them taking Palat because he would likely block the trade and if he didn’t there’s zero chance Seattle would want him.

They aren’t going to trade McCann, and get zero cap flexibility, plus a cap dump that will cost them 10m in salary. IIRC Francis hasn’t taken salary dumps in the past.

And Palat is an anchor. I doubt we could move him in the off-season to one of his 10 approved teams even if we retained salary.

His 22 points in 55 GP is a product of playing with our best forwards and it took a 16.7% SH% to get him to 12 goals.

He’s playing with our top players because he was 6m offensive void when he was playing in the bottom six.

Palat’s definitely declined since last season and will presumably get way more worse over the next two seasons.

I can see them taking Haula, he’s a cheaper, much more useful player but we would need to replace him next year.

That make no sense for the Kraken. If the Kraken move McCann, I would expect them to be looking for a blue-chip prospect likely to step in by 2026-27 at the latest.

Apart from that, it seems like a pretty dismal return to me. If the best piece in the trade is a 1st round pick in the 15-20 range in a draft lacking depth, it's certainly not worth it for us.

Okay.

It looks like Haula has a full no trade clause through this year that turns into a 6 team no trade list next year. So he’s not going anywhere until next year. I think we’re stuck with our turds for now.

Put him on waivers and let Grier take him for free. A page from Chris Drury's playbook.

Fitzgerald hands out NTC's and NMC's like candy.

Only way you trade Nemec is if the organization knows he's not a long term fit...Two years of any player aren't worth giving up a guy who can potentially play another ten with your team...Very shortsighted and McCann is good and needed but will want that last big contract which means he's gone in two years...

the Devils window is now. and I would not give Nemec away for just anyone.

1st, Blue Chip prospect, would probably get it done.

Something like a 1st and Lekkerimaki from Vancouver. But as a Canucks fan I wouldn't do that.
What do you mean by "blue chip"? Most teams don't trade their top prospect unless they are getting a superstar back. McCann is really good, but he's not a superstar. The good news for Seattle with him, is that he has long enough on his contract that it isn't going to be only contenders interested, a deal for McCann could make sense for nearly every team in the league that could make room for him as a top six LW.

And how many teams would trade their "superstar" for a blue-chip prospect? Also, a really good player like McCann on a steal of a contract for another 2.5 years would be worth a blue-chip prospect in my mind. This is not a situation where the Kraken have to move McCann. If McCann is truly available, there will very likely be a bidding war and I would expect atleast one of the teams to offer a blue-chip prospect.

I gave an example of "blue chip" in my post you quoted.

Ones in a who are building and want younger players and draft picks?

What would be the objective from Seattle point of view, to trade an offensively productive guy, not too old and signed to a good deal?

For future?

For immediate help, but younger?

I mean, Seattle won't receive an equivalently productive but younger guy, on his ELC and under control for a few more years in return, you realise that?

You have to give somewhere, you can't have the butter and the butter's money...

So if it's for future, it probably means a good 1st but not top 10 (10-20) + a good young prospect (not a blue chip) + young NHL player.

I personally don't see the Devils trading Nemec. They'll probably let Kovacevic go to UFA way before...

So in my mind, he's off the book.

As a Habs fan I'd do Calgary 1st + Mailloux + Heineman (he's been surprisingly good)

For

McCann

My point was, how often do you see superstars really get traded? Yes, it does happen but not that often.
How often do you see a team trade their top prospect? It isn't often either.

Part of my issue is with the use of the term "blue chip". Typically, blue chip means a future star. A can't miss player. So maybe I'm splitting hairs. I'm not saying he wouldn't get a good prospect back, but I don't think teams really ever trade blue chip prospects.

I can see the Canucks looking into bringing him back. A package like this would work for both teams:

To Vancouver: McCann, 2025 4th

To Seattle: Klimovich, Bains, Briesbois, Juulsen, 2026 5th

Blue chip is such a subjective term when using it to describe prospects. I see posters using that term or A+ prospects a lot, often prospects they’re describing are nothing but B level prospects IMO. Hard to respond to requests for blue chip prospects without very specific examples from the buying/bidding teams.

McCann is a very solid player with a couple more years of term, but no GM in the world is trading the next McDavid or Crosby for him that’s just absurd. He will absolutely return a late 1st++ or a very good prospect++, good returns.
