Reeds is putting Cowen in a position to fail. Cowen needs to be sheltered but is instead put out against top competition. He would probably look dominant on the bottom pairing.

young player are inconsistant

i dont get why no one understands that

I wish I could share the optimism of some with regards to Cowen, but unfortunately, I am unable to at this time.

He was horrendous to start the season, and yes he has improved a great deal since then, but he still sucks.

It's like he's gone from a modern nuke that would obliterate a 50 KM radius to the nuke dropped on Hiroshima.

Not as destructive, but still pretty damn awful.

Exatly. Like I said on the previous page Cowen is suffering from the Phillips syndrome. Due to our poor and green blue-line, he is getting too much responsibility right now.

He hasn't handled it too bad, but whats the alternative? He's a lefty, and we only have Gryba, Ceci, and Karlsson on the right side. Gryba or Ceci + Cowen would put them in the same situation they are in now. Not enough experience...

He would look great with Methot, but Methot is a lefty as well so that doesn't work. I think a Cowen-Ceci pair would be pretty good once they get a little more experience, but i'm not sure they are ready to be a second pair yet. Still, thats about our best option with what we've got if you don't want Jared on the top pairing.

Methot - Karlsson
Cowen - Ceci
Wiercioch - Gryba

That works positionally, but until they have some more games, thats not a very good blue-line imo.

The optimism for some of us was earned a couple of years ago when he stepped into our lineup and gave a great account of himself as a rookie. That is why people on this board were eagerly waiting for him to come back from in jury last year and help the club out. And in his first game back from in jury he shook some bones with a few hits, and laid a beating on a guy from the other team who tried to step up after one of those hits. It does not take any imagination at all to see what his potential is.

Young guys have off years. Yes, he has been awful. I would say he has been bad in about 75% of our games this year. But you either ride it out, or else you ship them out and deal with regrets down the road when they settle down and become solid D somewhere else.

The league is full of guys like Cowen who came in maybe a bit too early, struggled while showing flashes, and were then dealt for pennies on the dollar and went on to flourish elsewhere.

He needs to have his minutes scaled back to 12-14, sheltered where possible, and try to hit the reset button next season. Too early to write him off, but he has challenges to address for sure.

For all intents and purposes, this is Cowens 2nd year after the Calder Cup run that he played along with Greening, Smith, Condra, Boro, Grybs, Wiercioch. And i think there is a well known truism about that isnt there? Something about sophomore slumps guarantee career is over or something?

He's playing top pairing minutes against the leagues best players and for some reason, whenever he makes a mistake amongst his few mistakes a game still, they all stand out.

I guess he could still develop and become good, but it will be hard and there's no guarantee. Perhaps we should trade him now to a market with the character and patience not to tear down and rebuild at the first sign of adversity.

Cowen's problem isn't inconsistently, it's the opposite. He is consistently bad.

actually no since dec he has been good more often than not

it isnt a surprise the 4 guys coming off a summer of rehab are only starting too look good half way through the season (karlsson cowen spezza and michalek) they need reps to get going and that is what ottawa is giving them

So how does his 6 year contract extension fit into that context?

What six year contract extension are you referring to? Cowen received a four year extension.

He was also waiver exempt up until a month or so ago I believe, due to (a lack of) games played.

It would have been prudent to send him down when we had the opportunity.

Those are the pairings I would like to see as well, Karlsson also needs to be with a defender who can read his play & help him more defensively. It's not just Cowen, Karlsson has been brutal defensively as well as CBC analysts showed last game & it gets shown in a lot of games.

Was him holding out based on his own decision? Or was it what his agent told him to do?

Either way, this is when I started to dislike Cowen. Holds out, gets paid, then comes in and has a total stinker of a season with a few bright spots sprinkled in. Looks like some people believe he may not even be 100% NHL ready or that he should be playing lesser minutes.

I'd like to see him traded and have Boro take his spot, but that's just my opinion. Maybe he'll win me over at some point. For now he's literally the only player on the Ottawa Senators that I do not like. On the flip side, I really liked Boro. Hope he gets his chance.

boro would look twice as bad playing the role cowen plays

Meh. Boro's not the one making on average over $3m a season. If a player holds out for that much at his age, they better perform. The fact that some games Cowen looks like he doesn't even care just pisses me off, but that's just me. He's been a little better as of late though.

Cowen makes 1.5 this season... He's earning his pay

I'm pretty sure the organization as a whole isn't as short sighted as some of you are on Jared Cowen, hence his contract extension and their willingness to pay him the coin that he (or his agent) wanted.

He is a project. I didn't say trade him. I am just not realy sure how anyone can be happy or impressed with his play this season.

He's been terrible.

That doesn't mean he'll always be terrible.

Agreed, for most part he's been terrible this season, just no sugarcoating it. I hope he gets back to what i think he can be. I do however blame the coaches for playing him way too much. It's kind of like they are doing it to make up for the time lost when he got injured so he can catch up and develop quicker, which obviously can't work. Then again, we only have so many D that maybe they don't have a choice.
