When you look at Monty's development and how he looked when he first came to the Habs vs how he looks now, you should noticed one big thing. Compete Level and never giving up. He's resilient in terms of rebounding after bad games.

Hopefully Dobes has the same energy to keep improving.

Monty, Primeau, Dobes, Fowler. Their time don't overlap all the same but the opening is there for 2 of them to be part of our contender mix in 2+ years.

Montambault - 26 yo
Primeau - 24 yo
Dobes - 22 yo
Fowler - 19 yo

I think we will be ok in nets.
It's funny because even when Price was winding down people gave up on Lindgren who is now also an above average starter. Even Fucale is doing extremely well in the KHL and may find his way back since they're dead set on expanding to 40 teams.

Just like the whole team, he had a rough start to the season. Over his last 34 games he's put up a .918 save % which is very impressive for a rookie playing behind a pretty young defense.

To put into perspective how good that save % is, here is a list of highly touted prospects/high draft picks this year.

Wolf .923 - 35 games
Askarov .915 - 38 games
Wallstedt .912 - 42 games
Cossa .912 - 33 games
Silovs .907 - 33 games
Commesso .906 - 33 games

The young D does affect the goalie though (if your not Price). Being able to overcome this is great development IMO.

Most goalies have 3-5 good years and then they fade. Every season, there is a new top 10 with a few repeatable goalies in that mix. Very rare to have goalies who are in the top 10 for 5-10 years in a row.

I like our strategy with shoring up our D because if we have a good group of forwards and D, you can win without a guy like Price.

Technically he should take Primeau spot and challenge Monty this year.

Actuality is they will let Dobes simmer and then sign Fowler. At that point, whoever loses this battle between Primeau and Monty will be traded so Dobes can go up a level and Fowler can have two years in the AHL.

His tracking was fantastic last night too.
Big time, he made everything look easy. He was already so much better at it in the second half last season and he's still improving in that department. It's almost hard to believe how lost he looked in his first few games in the AHL compared to last night, it's really night and day. Big props to the kid, he put in the work and got better at his craft. He seems very coachable all around.

I always thought Primeau didn't get enough AHL games. They had him riding the pine during the Pandemic as the 3rd goalie, and then they kept bringing him up at the backup when Allen was injured. He should heven playing big minutes in Laval all those years.

I have no problem with Dobes playing big minutes in Laval this year over playing limited minutes as a backup.

Every goalie I've talked to says you g goalies need to play, and play a lot when they're young - to get into their bubble. It worked for Price when Gainey traded Huet, to let Price "entrer dans sa bulle."

You are not wrong, while 138 AHL games (including playoffs) seems ample, I think another full season was needed in Primeau's case.

Next season Dobes will be 24 and perhaps we will know what his upside is.

Dobes followed a similar path so far to Primeau. Stellar NCAA career followed by AHL starting position. Primeau had more ups and downs there than we would have planned for, but his ups were good enough to keep hope alive. Consistency will be the name of the game for Primeau, but I still think he is very much in the mix, same as Dobes. Now if Dobes has less ups and downs, he could surpass Primeau, but that's a good problem to have.

Not much you can do when waivers come into play. The pandemic screwed up optimal development for a lot of people.

My suggestion has always been that goalies should at least get a 4th year before waiver eligibility. They need to treat that position differently because a lot of goalies get kind of stuck since teams don't want to waive them.
