He has been amazing last few games.
I can’t imagine him improving much more. He’s very close to peak Karlsson.

another thing to point out is that he was playing his off side and did not look out of place at all

it does open up options for the team next season if needed
Should have been done on the Senators last season when we had Chychrun. Lost opportunity due to absolutely atrocious coaching.

I ****ing wish we had Peterka. His chemistry with Stu at the WJC was so obvious. Big missed opportunity there.

JJ-Stu-Giroux
Tkachuk-Norris-Batherson
Cousins-Pinto-Amadio
Perron-Greig-Gaudette/Gregor

If he's on the market we better pursue him seriously.
Bone headed GM and scouting staff at that time.

I wonder who Stu thinks is #1
Probably Makar. Maybe Quinn Hughes though.

Not sure how he could rank Sanderson ahead of either right now. But I don’t think he’s wrong he could get there given the recent pop in his offense and his defensive game.

Sanderson’s maturation as a superstar alongside Tkachuk and Stutzle goes a long way in my belief that we are now on the precipice of being a contendeR. He is a faster version of Scott Niedermayer, with a crazy arc as he yet to reach his full potential. I was making predictions on Chara being a future Norris winner (got laughed at by friends), making the same case for EK65. But this is an easy one to make, that Sanderson will also win a few. Hopefully all with the Sens, alongside a few cup rings ;).

Sorry, he's good, but not even close.
I maybe should have left out the “very” but I do think he’s gotten close.I’m taking into consideration defensive play as well. Which gives him a boost. (I’m not one of those that thought ek was a terrible defender. But Sandy is better at that end and that’s pretty important.)

Karlsson wasn't bad defensively, but he wasn't great. I'm sure it's happened, but I can't remember a single time that Sanderson pinched and put himself out of the play. And it's not like he doesn't step up to create offence, he's still the best on the team at bolting from the offensive blue line to keep a play alive. There's times I see Chabot not even consider it where I know Sanderson wouldn't hesitate.

Karlsson used his speed to get back in the play like no one else could, but there were a lot of times his risks didn't go well. And that's ok, players like that are going to get burned here and there and the benefit usually outweighed the downside. The crazy part about Sanderson though is that he is the shutdown D. Green ain't sending out anybody else in those situations if he has a choice. Those are hard minutes and he is already one of the best in the league at that. First over the boards to kill a penalty, always sent out for a defensive zone face-off against McDavid or Matthews or Kucherov or whoever. Now combine that with the fact he is 12th in scoring right now for defensemen. Since January 25th he's been over a point per game pace and the only D with more in the entire league is Makar. And if you look at the list of the top scoring defenders, how many of them are THE shutdown guy? Not just a player that is still good in that situation, but that team's first option no matter what. Most of them are sent out to capitalize on a weaker matchup to generate offence.

And I have zero doubt that once he gets a taste of playoff hockey, he will not only continue that level of play, he will exceed it. This kid is a gamer that gets better when the pressure is on.

It wasn't something exceptional or noticable if you weren't paying attention, but that OT against Chicago, they had possession and Bedard skated into the zone with the puck. Sanderson's gap control and pursuit of Bedard was so flawless and inescapable, Bedard had to leave the zone - there was nothing he could do. The Hawks tried to regroup and then screwed up along the wall trying to get the puck back up to Bedard, then Stützle picked up the errant pass and it was game over. But that's the stuff Sanderson does all the time; kills any chance and then we get the puck to create our own.

Defence wins championships. I would honestly take prime Sanderson (which is still not here yet), over prime Karlsson for the playoffs. And yes I do remember the 2017 run and it was unbelievable. It's not a knock on Karlsson, it's just that Sanderson is that good. The only concern I ever have when Sanderson is on the ice is if he's been saddled with an atrocious partner that fumbles his perfect pass immediately after Jake made 3 great moves to escape 2 all stars bearing down on him in the corner.

Love this kid and can't believe we have him

Sanderson was already playing like a veteran during his rookie year, the plays/moves he was making at NHL speed was already impressive then. You knew he was going to be really good, but I had no idea his overall game (now including offense) would be so good already!

For real lol, like Sanderson is incredible but it also just highlights how even more ridiculous Karlsson was.

Karlsson was an all timer, a top 10 defenceman ever at his best.
I'd argue top 5 of all time at his absolute best. Very few players could control and take over a game like prime Karlsson, the guy massively tilted the ice every shift.

To me he's kind of like a Orr/Lindros/Forsberg type of player where as dominant as he was, unlucky injuries prevented him from really showing what he was truly capable of.

Sandy is getting there. He still needs some polishing up, and makes some odd decisions here and there, but he's still incredibly young.

But no way I'd put that kind of pressure and expectations on him to be #2 in the league. He may very well get there, but I'm not setting that as an expectation.

Sanderson, Tkachuk & Stutzle are the three best players on this team & depending on who you like the most any of them can be their best player on any given night. The second tier IMO are Batherson, Giroux & Chabot followed closely by Pinto, Cozens, Greig & Jensen, then Perron, Amadio & Zub. Where they really need to upgrade on is their 4th line & I was hoping he would do that at the trade deadline, but I guess now it will have to way until the summer. Yakemchuk should help the 3rd pairing be better whenever he arrives. I imagine Zetterlund fits in with Cozens & Greig. Greig's game keeps growing too, he's going to be really good.

Ullmark should probably be in there somewhere although right now I would add Merilainen before adding the two NHL goalies. I have much more confidence in him for some reason then the two NHLers, he doesn't allow as many shit goals as the other two. Hopefully, Ullmark will return to form down this stretch they need him to get into the playoffs & then up a notch during the playoffs.

Sandy isn't in the same tier as EK. They're different type of defenders and I don't want to have unrealistic expectations of Sanderson.

Sanderson can probably never change the dynamic of the game the way EK could, heck Stu might not even be able to and he's got the most raw talent out of our roster. But he doesn't need to. Sanderson just needs to keep using his high defensive IQ to play amazing defence and keep on developing his game.

If he can hit a few 70 point seasons, great, but for now I'll take 50 points in a higher scoring era and elite shut down D.

In my opinion I don't see Sanderson ever winning a Norris Trophy.
He has a lot of incredible point getting defensemen ahead of him and he will be in competition with them for many more seasons. I have no doubt that at some point he will be considered for a Norris Trophy, but winning one will be tough.

Unless he gets an outlier win like Doughty did in 2016 when he got 51 points. That year Karlsson had 82 points.....clearly the voters did not want to see our Erik win the trophy two seasons in a row....what a ripoff. Even if Sanderson is one of the 3 finalists in the future for a Norris Trophy he may not win because of voter politics.

This year Jake is tied for 12th in defensemen scoring with 42 points.
Makar with 75 points
Werenski with 68 points
Hughes with 60 points in 50 games

I think Sandy wins a Norris within the next 5 years. In fact I would bet a good amount on it, especially if Staios keeps improving the roster.

Been amazing to see him slowly build his game up after quite some time of inconsistency.

He just oozes class, so happy we get to see him after witnessing Karlssons years with us. Like others have stated, it’s hard to compare the two of them considering their differences.

For some reason, I’m enjoying watching Sanderson more than Karlsson considering his defensive game. Felt like Karlsson was more dependent on having Methot next to him than Sanderson is dependent on Zub.

That doesn’t take away the joy of watching EK at all, absolutely loved him. Sanderson just more complete with his skillset.
