I maybe should have left out the “very” but I do think he’s gotten close.I’m taking into consideration defensive play as well. Which gives him a boost. (I’m not one of those that thought ek was a terrible defender. But Sandy is better at that end and that’s pretty important.)
Karlsson wasn't bad defensively, but he wasn't great. I'm sure it's happened, but I can't remember a single time that Sanderson pinched and put himself out of the play. And it's not like he doesn't step up to create offence, he's still the best on the team at bolting from the offensive blue line to keep a play alive. There's times I see Chabot not even consider it where I know Sanderson wouldn't hesitate.
Karlsson used his speed to get back in the play like no one else could, but there were a lot of times his risks didn't go well. And that's ok, players like that are going to get burned here and there and the benefit usually outweighed the downside. The crazy part about Sanderson though is that he is the shutdown D. Green ain't sending out anybody else in those situations if he has a choice. Those are hard minutes and he is already one of the best in the league at that. First over the boards to kill a penalty, always sent out for a defensive zone face-off against McDavid or Matthews or Kucherov or whoever. Now combine that with the fact he is 12th in scoring right now for defensemen. Since January 25th he's been over a point per game pace and the only D with more in the entire league is Makar. And if you look at the list of the top scoring defenders, how many of them are THE shutdown guy? Not just a player that is still good in that situation, but that team's first option no matter what. Most of them are sent out to capitalize on a weaker matchup to generate offence.
And I have zero doubt that once he gets a taste of playoff hockey, he will not only continue that level of play, he will exceed it. This kid is a gamer that gets better when the pressure is on.
It wasn't something exceptional or noticable if you weren't paying attention, but that OT against Chicago, they had possession and Bedard skated into the zone with the puck. Sanderson's gap control and pursuit of Bedard was so flawless and inescapable, Bedard had to leave the zone - there was nothing he could do. The Hawks tried to regroup and then screwed up along the wall trying to get the puck back up to Bedard, then Stützle picked up the errant pass and it was game over. But that's the stuff Sanderson does all the time; kills any chance and then we get the puck to create our own.
Defence wins championships. I would honestly take prime Sanderson (which is still not here yet), over prime Karlsson for the playoffs. And yes I do remember the 2017 run and it was unbelievable. It's not a knock on Karlsson, it's just that Sanderson is that good. The only concern I ever have when Sanderson is on the ice is if he's been saddled with an atrocious partner that fumbles his perfect pass immediately after Jake made 3 great moves to escape 2 all stars bearing down on him in the corner.
Love this kid and can't believe we have him
