Any Ottawa fans in here? They appear to have 3 great LDs, is Chabot available?

Guentzel with extension as a base but willing to add
Ottawa needs a solid starting goaltender capable of playing 50 games a year and a top-4 RD more than anything. It's likely that ADC is on the market and will be traded for one of these two pieces as we are very top-heavy on offense right now.

Why would the Pens trade their top goal scorer for a D? Especially when another team is likely to outbid them for their 4th leading goal scorer? Especially when their 2nd and 4th leading goal scorers are unlikely to play a full 82 games again?
Doesn't seem like a very logical move.
Because defense has been a major problem for this last few years and they are likely letting Dumoulin walk in FA.

There are a handful of decent wingers to be had in FA that could help replace Jakes offense but Pitt needs to prioritize defense.

Also there’s even a chance Jake walks away in FA after next year if we suck again

I can say with full confidence that you are wrong.

Brodie IS the better player.
Petry provided double the production of Brodie last year. Historically, Petry has been a better producer. Penguins need more scoring on the back end, not less. To move with the deal, we'd have to hope that Marner out produces what Guentzel would have to cover the spread.

Think the Pens could use a shakeup, and he could be our best shot at getting a good defenseman back.

What could he fetch? 1 year left on current deal but could also be a part of a sign and trade for better value.

Ideally we are looking for a top pair LD. I’m not sure who is actually available out there but have heard names like Toews and Provorov thrown around this board and I think they would be the type of player/value the Pens would want.

any sort of extension talk happened after July starts so you aren’t getting anything from 23 drsft.

he is not someone you sign more than 4 yrs so sign and trade doesn’t matter.

Guentzel is one of the best, most under the radar players in the NHL. If he is to be traded, it needs to be for something very, very good. Off the top of my head i have no idea what that would be. If PIT was a normal team, I would say trade him for multiple 1sts, and/or young prospects. They are not, however. They still have one of the best players on the planet, and another one who can be dominant when healthy, as well as another superb Dman in Letang. Until they retire or are moved, there is no point rebuilding.

Might as well shift around lesser players, and hope they catch fire somehow.Addison can probably be had for cheap. Not good defensively, but he's only a rookie(IMO, Evason was on a mission to destroy his confidence), and runs a PP very well. I am guessing a 2nd might get him, maybe a bit more?

I don't know what to make of Granlund at this point. He can be a vg, smart player, but it could be that stints at two of the most offense hating teams in the league, NSH and MN, have finally killed all of his skill. Nevertheless, he could be a new player when he comes back next year, and contribute.

Yes but not at the expense of Guentzel. Say you find prime Dumoulin, you are worse off as a team if you do that deal. Far worse off.

If Jake is traded at all, it's in a Neal for Hornqvist swap where you are bringing in a top-line winger with a different skill set.

That Brodie deal is rough. I'm not sure the difference in the packages is Pickering unless the Leafs are kicking in a prospect like Minten or a pick.
Brodie has 1 year at 5 mill left and is still a top 4 Rd.

It would have to be an overpayment to acquire Jake, still young, produces every season and a proven winner come playoff time. Point per game in the post season sure is worth a lot, we see it now with these players that produce in the regular season but have a hard time come playoffs

Sure but at most it would be the addition of Dube just to make the cap work. Calgary wouldn't add anything else. The gap isn't larger than that
So Hanafin + Dube for Guentzel?

That's still going to be a no. That's a classic quantity for quality. The need for Hanafin isn't so great that it's worth the downgrade from Guentzel to Dube.

Guentzel will probably end up being sold for futures as your team starts considering rebuilding next deadline anyways so suit yourself

Even Chabot haters in Ottawa would likely agree Chabot isn't available from a management point of view.

Maybe thing change with new ownership, but I really don't see Dorion and co moving him.

Toronto has way more usage for a player like Hanifin than we do.

He’s not really a huge piece for the Penguins. They want more of a defensive LD.
You are aware that Hanifin has a strong defensive game right?

But if you think it's more of a fit issue then sure. Good luck in your search for a defensive LD potentially available better than Hanifin

I mean Toronto fans seemed ok with it for Nylander and Nylander is at least on par with Guentzel. Something tells me you either underrate Hanifin and Dube or overrate Guentzel
Yes, but Toronto would still have Matthews, Tavaras, and Marner, all of which are proven goal scorers. After Guentzel, we are fairly weak. Nylander is surplus in Toronto. Guentzel is NOT surplus in Pittsburgh.

If you want him in Calgary, you are coughing up more than Hanifin and Dube. Period.
