No thanks at 5 years
I don't think it's automatic that he would chase money, nor is it automatic that other teams are going to give him 4m+. I mean it's not like we are only ones to know that his S% is unsustainably high, every GM is going to look at him career year with a crazy high S% and have the same doubts we all do about what his production will be going forward. The career year is at best adding a few hundred K to his caphit.Obviously he's going to chase the bag. This is his chance to cash in on his career. It's been building up to this point. He's not going to give a "team-friendly deal" -- he's never had a chance to make a not-friendly deal in the first place, it would be insane for him to leave money on the table.
Let him sign with the Kraken or the Islanders for 4.15m a season or whatever it ends up being. I wish him the best. He's always welcome back at 50% retained
That puts him at 33? There’s a lot of 3rd and 4th line vets in that neighborhood. Besides, in 2-3 years they probably trade him anyway.Unfortunately, given his age, that's too long. Tough to hand out that length of contract for a 3rd/4th liner. I totally understand why he'd ask for it because it's his last deal but if he isn't willing to move, then we need to walk away. Nothing personal, it's just business
If we're trading him in a couple years, then there's definitely no point in signing that type of deal. That puts him at 33? There’s a lot of 3rd and 4th line vets in that neighborhood. Besides, in 2-3 years they probably trade him anyway.
Why not? If he’s still capable, teams might want term, especially if it’s reasonable moneyIf we're trading him in a couple years, then there's definitely no point in signing that type of deal.

Why not??
If the caphit is kept low by going with those extra years then he would be easily tradeable if Beck/Kapanen ever replace him. It's also a fools game to predict when a player's age will cause a decline, plenty of players and in particular the speedy defensive guys are still at their peak for all their early 30s.Because its almost guaranteed that it will end up a bad contract.
Evans turns 29 this summer. So he'll be 29, 30, 31, 32, and 33 years old during that contract. Those are years when players decline.
Furthermore, we have Beck/Kapanen who will need that opportunity at 3C. So then you'll have Evans making good money playing on the 4th line. The habs will also be low on cap space in the last couple of years of that contract when they have Demidov, Hutson, Laine, Suzuki, Caufield, Slafkovsky, etc. making a ton of money. It will make keeping other better players on the roster harder because we have a 4th line center making like 4M.
The top dollar amount means either a high cap hit, which is bad and a no-go for a bottom6 player with a career high that starts with a 2, or a long contract, which is bad and a no-go for a bottom6 player who is 28 and not particularly fast, big, or tough.I don't think it's automatic that he would chase money, nor is it automatic that other teams are going to give him 4m+. My guess is that Evans will care about term more then cap hit. Getting term means more guaranteed dollars, and most players will care about the top line dollar amount more then caphit. And that's doubly so for guys who have had serious injuries in the past, Evans will no doubt have at the back of his mind that it just takes one hit like the Scheifele to end his career and there's no next contract. So securing the max term and as a result highest total contract value is what he'll care about even in the case of trying to chase the bag.
Yes, and his value is all time high right now.If we're trading him in a couple years, then there's definitely no point in signing that type of deal.
Or it just means one year longer then whatever the agent feels they could get on the FA market. If his agent believes he'll get 3 years at 3.5m per as a FA, and we offer 4 years at 2.75m per, then it's more money then he would get as a FA while not being a particularly high cap hit or a long term contract. The top dollar amount means either a high cap hit, which is bad and a no-go for a bottom6 player with a career high that starts with a 2, or a long contract, which is bad and a no-go for a bottom6 player who is 28 and not particularly fast, big, or tough.
I wish him well in his chasing the bag. Hope the Habs are smart enough to not risk it, and if they do risk it, I hope they're lucky enough it doesn't hurt.
Or he asks for 4 years at the same 3.5 cap hit and the Habs don't bite and he goes to FA knowing the rising cap means a lot of freewheeling and spending will come. Evans career high points: 29
Evans actual points: 25
Only 4 points remaining to tie his career high points
Only 5 points remaining to have a new career high points (30)

High shot % year
career high 29 points
closing to 30
This is why you dont give that 5x4 to a player like him. Yall gonna regret it in a year max.
I approve of this lineup for the exception of leaving Armia out. I'm confident that he will be extended and the skillset that he has will be crucial for a contending team aspiring for the SC.I would sign Evans 4*4. Even if he regresses a bit , we need him for depth. He’s also useful on the wing , we’ve seen it in the playoffs.
Next year team is looking good , with the addition of 2 1st round picks
Caufield-Suzuki-Demidov
Laine-Dach-Slafkovsky
Heineman-Evans-Newhook
Anderson-Beck-Gallagher
Hutson Matheson
Ghule Carrier
Xhekaj Reinbacher
Struble
Montambault
Dobes
What are the top 4th line centers pulling down. We should NOT be paying Jake Evans much more than that.
Jake Evan will not be our 3C if we are to contend let alone win anything. HuGo knows this and should act accordingly. I would give Evans a decent raise for two seasons but then reduce the AAV after that as his role will surely change. 2x 3.5M-4M 3x 2.75M-3M. NO CLAUSES This would allow us some protection on the back end. Like it or take a hike Jake.

I disagree he's never been a good 3C and he's been playing the role for three seasons running now.I don't know bud. I think he is a very good 3C. Look across the NHL at all the 3C's.
Funny on how things have switched this year. Glad to see our herd valuing guys like Armia. Because if we were to have a bottom 6 that is all youth, it's going to delay our march up the standings.
Prospect pool is full and we have more picks to come. Let them earn their way up and force your hand. We have to stop penciling in youth (other than Demidov types). These are not transition years and we should not be wasting prime years of Suzuki on a value contract.
