I don’t want them to keep Evans at all cost especially depending on his ask for his next contract. Depend also on what they could get for him. But he’s a good stop gap between the younger guys and the present. Some vets are still needed.
We need to keep Evans because Dach is so trash. We can't afford to let him go.

Ah yes call up Beck, because he's a guarantee to be better like Dach was a guarantee to be better, right?

We need good players not 2nd round picks.

/thread.
You can make that type of comment all you want, they’re not winning this season or on the short term. They’ll decide what they do with him.

Dach and Evans don’t have the same role, btw.

Yeah clearly since Dach is an AHL winger right now and Evans is a 4th line C.

It doesn't matter if they're not winning this year, we need to start accumulating roster players and not just futures. Evans is a good one, hes young, he's homegrown and he's not going to get worth a whole lot. All good reasons to keep him around. We're not scorched earth anymore, we're building. Evans is only 3 years older than Suzuki. It's good to have players that grew up together.

Evans is a 4th line center who will want to sign and be paid as a 3C and the average 3C runs anywhere from 3.1M - 4M.
The truth is we might have to bite the bullet on Evans to acquire a 2C which has clearly become far more of an issue at this point.

He's not gonna ask for 3+ that's crazy he has 100 career points. He's a 2-2.5 range player.

If he wants to be overpaid, sure let him walk, like every other player.

3M is fine for a dependable player like Evans. It's not 2013 anymore, the cap has raised and will do so again sooner than later.

Saw another one of your comments which was about the Habs needing to get to the building phase. Well, he's far from a core building block, but when you have such a dynamic defensive forward who you can consistently count on, it's worth something. Especially at center. 3M salary for a few years will not be the reason why they can't afford something else. Dogshit players like Anderson, Dvorak will be though, inflated contracts like Gallagher, Armia also. With that sad roster, if a generous but fair contract to Evans is what makes your long-term plan crumble, you're in big trouble.

We don't even know if Beck or anyone else in the system will be as reliable as Evans (excellent checker with faceoff ability). The team sucks ass in most defensive metrics and in a situation that somehow couldnt possibly have been foreseen, the youngsters are actually in over their heads or just surviving, and the vets arent leading by example with constant blunders. Evans is one of the "vets" who actually show the way. Hell, I'd take a 3rd line with all Evans clones at the 3 forward positions if I could, it would probably be one of the best defensive lines in the league.

If the Habs paid Evans 3x3 I would be ok with it.
I am a bit weary though of contracts afforded to guys like Byron and Armia that didn't age well.

He's playing really well this year. Once Laine comes back, I actually think we'll see a Caufield-Evans-Laine second line which is a crap load of talent for Evans to play with. If Dach and Newhook stay at W or can't take his sport as 2C, Evans is going to have himself a 40-50 points season

He's gonna cash in this summer. I expect a 20M contract or even more, something like a 4.25 x 5. I don't think the Habs can afford him at this price though

His reliability, speed and lack of physicality make him better suited for the 2C on the Habs. This is working well too because the bottom 6 is pretty physical at the moment which complements the top 6 relative softness quite well. I think at this point the team needs to string some wins and play sound defence so the 2C spot is pretty much his

Dach has a season long injury and people call him trash for not being back in top shape 15 games in.

Classic trash fans.
Dach has a long leash, actually, but he shouldn't be given special treatment. The team goes before the player. Dach will have to figure it out.

He will, sure. But players take a long time to come back from injury and get their timing back. Judging too early is dumb and potentially damaging if the decoders were to fall for the same trap.

He's playing in the top 6, so he is being given every opportunity right now to get back at it. Playing wing also gives him less responsibilities.
