Player Discussion Jake Evans (Part II)

To be honest, the player i like the most in this team is Even. He does not have elite skill like Suzuki or wrist shot like KK, but he does well his job. Smart, hard work, speedy, always at the right place, he makes it so easy. He is by far better than Tatar in the shutdown line.

100%! It's guys like this behind our skilled young players that will turn this team into a solid team. He skates, good IQ, physical and can handle contact, and plays a good 200' game. Poehling, Ylonen, Tuch, are others who are coming in future seasons.

Jake Evans, or known as the guy I was most wrong about AFTER he was drafted. So many bad bad posts about him......I surpassed myself.

But in order to eat the crow I need to eat, here's what I want....don't sign Danault, make him your regular 3rd C.

We didn't feel the need to do it this year and ended up with a completely ineffective 4th line for 2/3 of the season.

I agree though that he's a player. Should look better with normal intervals between games. But there's no harm in signing a 13th forward who can fill in as the #4C if need be.
Of course - as long as it's not a repeat of the Staal/Thompson situation where we're just tossing Evans aside in the name of the experience intangible.

He only played 3 games - so 3-0 with him in the lineup and 1-3 without
correct, game 5 tatar was still in. Sorry.

Though i still think he made a huge visible difference when he played. He is a player able to take the puck deep into their zone and as a result create sustained pressure. Not just dump.....and backtrack

Lets call it the ''Ryan White memorial award'' ;)

Because he shut down Matthews 3 minutes a game while Danault shut down Matthews 20 minutes a game? So he is ready taking Danault's spot full time? What about wait and see next round or take a look who's available free agency next summer?

Evans and Poehling over Danault and Staal, for sure.

Think you might be dismissing Poehling a bit too quick for the 3rd center role.

It is funny seeing posters talk about his speed, skating and then thinking back to when he was drafted and how impressive it is that he must have put a lot of work into that between 18 and 25 to improve his speed/skating to where it is now. It will be very interesting to see what he can turn into for us, he's exactly what you want to see from a prospect, just gets better every year, works hard, is smart, has skill, goes to the AHL and becomes one of their best players in his rookie year, has a strong 2nd pro season that after a brutal start he caught fire the rest of the way. This year he's earned a full time NHL spot.

His concussion history is very concerning...

These guys who play on the edge and have fought their entire professional lives to move up and prove people wrong often put themselves in more dangerous situations. Evans goes hard into the boards wildly at times. He feels like he has to to keep his spot.

I still think he has more offensive upside than Lehkonen or Byron. So on the one hand I'd like to see what he can do as a winger with two offensive linemates. On the other hand, I wouldn't mind seeing him and Danault form the core of a shutdown line, Gainey-Carbo style.

He didn't make a sudden quantum leap in his skating he simply played too passive of a style and never used it. Both he and Julien alluded to this earlier in the season. I always thought that it was just a strength issue as he has always had good mechanics but he never really played as an F1. He was always more concerned with covering defensively as the high forward and rarely was engaged in a foot race on the backcheck as his positioning was so good. He was far more inclined to fill passing lanes than to lead the forecheck. Offensively he has always been very cerebral and played primarily as a distributor. Playing at lower levels he was smart enough to be very effective without exerting a ton of energy. Bouchard entirely re-shaped his game as an up tempo F1 while still filling his responsible F3 duties.

I was never a huge fan of his because he played at such a slow, passive tempo and was under-sized. I had no idea that he had this engine under the hood and now that he is using it he is an entirely different player.

I know the stat watchers scoffed at me for suggesting that we protect him earlier in the season.....I wonder if they feel the same way now?

Or Danault-Evans could form two thirds of a great shutdown line, Gainey-Carbo style, while KK, Suzuki, and Poehling continue to develop.

It's like saying "Don't re-sign Danault, make Greg McKegg your regular 3rd C."

I like Evans a lot, but come on...

And when did Kotkaniemi become our #2C? I have yet to see him being effective in that capacity.
Maybe we shouldn't be striving towards playing low-ceiling, mostly, defensive centers (Danault or Evans) so much against Matthews.

Maybe we should be striving towards building a team that worries less about trying to shut down Matthews for 20 mins...

And instead, force Matthews to have to defend for at least half of those minutes by having him play against guys who are also threats offensively?

To me...that's where the Habs need to be going.

And that's no disrespect to Danault or Evans

I wonder...how is it like? How is Evans like McKegg? And how are you not unable to understand that if we sign Danault it's for 5M$ per year for numerous years? For absolutely NO OFFENSE to show for? How is it still comparable to McKegg?

Well one step before another, Poehling should be our 4th line C. And in the end yeah, might be competing with Evans in the future.
