It is a disgrace that it has taken this long for a huge number of hockey fans to take note of the Slavster - **** you, Gary - but I have also long said he’s quite overrated by his fan club (which includes me). The lack of offense is inexcusable. Peak Ekholm was just as valuable, for example.
The lack of offense is by design, not inexcusable lol.

No, I think you might be right, they're both game by game.

Slavin having "more" offense doesn't mean he's better at offense, it's just that offense scores you more brownie points. The team that scores more goals wins.
Yeah but counterpoint: it goes back to the start of the season, not just 2 months. Your rebuttal? We've switched sides lol

MY BRAIN HURTS

So in the time it took you two to confuse each other, I went to the website where those cards originated and found that it has <checks notes> Johnathan Kovacevic as not just better, but a LOT better defensively than Slavin. Like, a LOT better.

I’m just gonna rest my case on that.
Kovacevic is very, very good.

But I wouldn't go that far.

I’m assuming that was him trying to say the quoted chart was irrelevant because of that.
I don't know if I like "irrelevant." You have to take each piece of data with a grain of salt and look at other pieces of data, as well as viewings. I don't agree that Kovacevic is better.

Just worth pointing out, I feel, that Kovacevic is an excellent defender, so that wasn't completely pulled out of an ass.

Anyone that says anyone other than Makar is the best defender in the NHL is flat out wrong.

Just like Bobby Orr was the guy in the late 70’s of his time, Ray Bourque was the guy in the 80’s/90’s Lidstrom was the guy in the 2000’s and Karlsson was the guy in the 2010’s. Cale Makar is that of the current day.

Why make a thoughtful argument based on the eye test and statistical analysis when you can just go to www.imright.com and pull up a stupid WAR chart to do it for you!?

WAR is ridiculous in hockey. It works for baseball.

Can Jacob Slavin make a case as the most valuable dman in the NHL?

To me as a goalie who played competitive hockey all my life I really appreciated the defensive guys.

Watching the 4 nations I really had a chance to watch slavin (and every other dman there and I’m a leafs fan who is Canadian so there is zero bias here).

To me a player who single handedly stop 3 goals is more important to a team than a guy who scores one. Makar for an example while still very good defensively is still not close to his level as a shut down defender. He lead the Americans in TOI and without him they likely would have lost 4-2. A guy that can run a top PP like DeAngelo or a prime Tyson Barrie is so much easier to find than a defender that can log 25 minutes of good 2way hockey.

I guess the big argument I have is the Vancouver Canucks imo would be so much better with DeAngelo and Slavin in and Quinn Hughes out

Am I the only one who sees him in the Makar conversation?
I'd take his d partner in the tournament over him ten times out of 10

I wasn’t going all the way down that rabbit hole, but I agree. In the past decade we’ve swept away the vestiges of terrible data like +/- and GAA, and replaced them with more terrible data like PDO and WAR.
