Elite offense and top end skill is always more rare, and more valuable than elite defence. Always.
It's definitely not more rare unless you consider good defense to be elite, and if so, because it's not, that goes to show how much rarer elite defense is. But the problem is you pay 11M for the same player quality you would pay 7M for if he were defensive. Look at Krug, Faulk, Petry, Montour, Dunn, Ekholm, Lindholm, Parayko and McDonagh's salaries lol. Those 4 defensive dmen are by far the 4 best players listed, easily even twice the player whichever of the others is the best, it's like 4 elite players compared to 5 depth/UFA replacement level players, but they make the same money if not even less. Why is Danault, an elite shutdown center, making as much as Bjorkstrand, Mittelstadt, Teravainen, below average PP specialists? Players only get paid for their hockeydb page, defense comes free. But it's a literally equal part of the team.

I think scoring is too situational and the game too dynamic to extrapolate out like that, personally.
It's just another angle to look at, another data point. I like more available information instead of less. There will never not be too many variables. There's always interference that you have to account for, and a lot you can't even account for.

...the problem lies when people stop believing in the eye test as well and just spout skewed stats that don't take into account the plethora of other variables that can sway stats one way or another...

Slavin isn't even the best Defenseman on his own team.

As a single player? No. But every single contending team, especially those who go far in playoffs need a player like him. There are plenty of PP1 guys, but how many excellent defencive D-man do exist?

It's about supply & demand imo.

I mean how many Norris trophies does Slavin have?

Fewer than Burns last I checked.

Burns has also played in Stanley Cup Finals games.

Something Slavin has never done (and likely never will).

I'd rather have a 40 year old former Norris Defenseman that knows how to win over a 30 year old pylon that's never won jack shit in his career.
