It's a subjective thing. In my opinion, a player isn't "generational" is just being very good at their position is all it takes. If Hank and Karlsson are, why isn't someone like Kane too?

You look at points scored over huge samples of games and championships, trophies etc and Crosby an OV are very, very clearly on another plane from anyone else. To me, that's generational. Being head and shoulders above the rest of your generation.
Are Lundqvist and Karlsson not head and shoulders above the peers of their generation?

Thank you.

People forget just how mediocre to bad those Ranger rosters were in the mid-late 2000's.

Hasek should not be the standard we hold goalies to. He's the best to have ever done it. It's like saying Crosby isn't generational because he isn't Gretzky.

Hughes's stats are almost identical this season compared to last season (ushl at 2ppg, us national team bit over 2ppg). How has he actually played? I havent seen anything more special from him than from Kakko, but I havent seen more than few full games in Wjc.

I don't think so honestly. Certainly not to the extent Crosby and OV are.
I think you can make a strong case for both. There’s other players that have reached the same peaks they have, but not for as long as they have, especially Lundqvist, it’s like how the Sedins also won Harts/Art Ross’s during Crosby and Ovechkin’s primes

If you go any other board and ask whether Crosby and Ovechkin were the best two players of their generation, you would get a 'yes'.

Ask the same about Karlsson, and you'll get some mixed opinions, but he would probably come out ahead.

Ask the same about Hank, and you'll get some mixed opinions that end up having him in the top two or three or something stupid like that.

Generational guys are an unquestioned concensus; there is no debate from honest fans about it.

I'm going to be frank here, Devils would be stupid not to pick Kakko ... and I'm not cool with Hughes as a "consolation prize".

It's Kakko or bust for me. Has been all year. Much like Byfield next year.

Howe, Orr, Gretzky, Lemieux, Hasek, Ovechkin, Crosby, McDavid (probably)

Those are the generational players.

Perhaps some older guys as well, but I'm not well enough versed on it to add them.

How is Kakko's character?

Also, does he speak English?
he seems like he loves hockey and plays with energy

I dont think he knows much English though, gonna need one of our new Finn fans to chime in on that.

I'm more interested in our future roster, what do we do with our RW? I know Kakko can play C very well from what I've seen and what others have said, not sure if he can play LW as good though. I wonder if this makes us push after Panarin even harder though, our top 6 could be sick in 3 ish years

You’d also get most of the people say Lundqvist is a top 15 (probably closer to 10) goalie of all time, is that not generational? Going and asking and needing a resounding opinion feels like more of a PR thing of Crosby and Ovechkin being rammed down everyone’s throats since the lockout by the NHL rather than Lundqvist not actually being a generational goalie. The only one even close to him in the same era is Luongo, and I don’t even think it’s that close. You’d probably also get some people who think Price is better, but he’s had one season that was Lundqvist level.

If Kreider goes I think the push becomes harder, but I'm not sure it really matters.

BTW, what was the site with all the iso videos you mentioned yesterday?

My definition of "generational" is different than your's I think. Being the best player of your generation isn't enough. You need to be unquestionably dominant at your position.

Hank was the best goalie of his generation, hands down imo. But he was always playing second or sometimes third fiddle to whoever the flavour of the week was in a particular season.

If you look at the list I posted above, those guys never played second fiddle (except to each other) while they were in their primes. Ovechkin is the most borderline one there, but his other-worldly goal scoring hasn't been challenged.
