Hughes is the closest thing we have seen to McDavid. Also, right now he is 5’10 166 pounds, he has plenty of time to put on weight and grow before he steps into the NHL. And fwiw, Crosby was drafted at 5’10 180.
Yea but Crosby is built like a stump from top to bottom. Everything on that guy is thick. Isn't Hughes said to be a bit on the thinner side of things?

Don't even see Hughes as a 1 over all pick.. He's playing like a around 7-10 range! I'd say Lafrenierre

They are both great in different ways
would take either anytime

I will skew to Lafr. just based on current size potential
sorry but in NHL size matters over long run

Size is the most overrated hockey attribute.

A lot of small players play bigger than players with size.

They key is speed and skill.

Crosby was listed at 5'10 193 at his last WJC.

How so? If we're talking in terms of raw numbers Lafreniere had a better rookie season than McDavid did and they were both the same age when they made their junior debut. Not saying Alexis is gonna be the next McDavid but saying "Hughes is the closest thing we have seen to McDavid" is a bit silly.

Mcdavid had exceptional status and played in the O at 15. He racked up 99 pts in 56 games as a 16 year old. Lafreniere had 80 points in 60 games as a 16 year old. So yea he out produced Mcdavid in Mcdavids 15 year old season.

Gimme hughes tho

By that logic then, Tavares and Taylor Hall out produced Lafreniere. Especially when you factor in how scoring translates from each league. You are also comparing Lafreniere's 16 year old season against McDavid's 15 year old season.

Lol, what? McDavid's draft -2 season (rookie season) he had 66 pts in 63 games, in his draft -1 season (this upcoming season for Lafreniere) he had 99 pts in 56 games, in his draft year he had 120 pts in 47 games (2020 draft year for Lafreniere). Lafreniere's draft -2 season was this past season (also his rookie year, exactly like McDavid), in which he had 80 pts in 60 games.

People generally compare CHL players by birth years. McDavid's was his 15-year-old season, his 16-year-old season was his D-1.

Uh no you compare their draft years because they're basically the same age, there's just 4 months of difference. Saying McDavid was 15 and Alexis was 16 is laughable, it's mis-information just to support your narrative.

Alexis is an October bday and McDavid is January. Alexis started his rookie season (draft -2 season) as a 15 year old (season starts in September) and he turned 16 one month later. McDavid started his rookie season (draft -2) season as a 15 year old and he turned 16 in January.... so what?

Then what do you do in the case of someone like Hughes, who is closer in birth year, rather than draft year to Lafreniere. Or someone like Crosby and Mackinnon? Crosby was 6 weeks older, and MacKinnon was about a month. In general, people go by birth year when comparing CHL talents against each other. Still, if you want to go by draft year, I'd say Lafreniere's D-2 is still significantly less impressive than John Tavares's, and probably less impressive than Taylor Hall when you factor in how scoring translates from each league.

You literally always compare by birth year

I get the feeling you think he tops out as a Hall/Stamkos level prospect.

I would agree with that. I don't think he is top echelon level guy.

I just compared their ages relative to their 1st junior season, they both started their rookie seasons as 15 year olds. What are you even arguing about? Lafreniere turned 16 1 mont into his 1st junior season, McDavid turned 16 4 months into his rookie season. Whoopty doo?

Mcdavid was the lone ‘97 playing in the entire chl that season. Lafreniere wasnt the only ‘01 playing this past season

Lmao and if he was born 1 month earlier he would have been a 96, SO WHAT? It's simple math.

Is what it is. I wont argue anymore and I think we are both right. But, u cant honestly think Lafreniere is even close to Mcdavid

You're definitely not right but you're free to think how you want. Also i clearly said "Not saying Alexis is gonna be the next McDavid but saying "Hughes is the closest thing we have seen to McDavid" is a bit silly" in my 1st post, all i did was provide factual evidence of their production during their rookie season.

I prefer Hughes myself....I love how exciting he is on the ice....he is a very good playmaker and scorer....lafreniere I like, but I found the 5 times I watched him last year he put up a lot of points in the game but never stood out much unless you really paid attention to hi....he is smart and moves to the right areas, I find he needs to work on his past placement but hands soft hands, an amazing ability to find loose pucks...but would not shock me if a guy like Quinton byfield could pass lafreniere.

Hughes is clearly better but Lafreniere projects better to me with his stature. I think you can get away being a somewhat undersized center (stature wise) like Crosby....but we're talking a generational level talent with incredible lower body strength. Tough to tell how Hughes will fare at the next level in that regard.

Either way, I'd take Hughes without much of a second thought right now.

Are you sure? I've dealt with a fair share of French, and French-Canadian peoples, and have never encountered this.

I wish his first name was Xavier. Lafreniere is probably the closest name to Laflamme (that I can think of). Being a young phenom...

Someone give him #70!

Yes, I am sure. I have cousins and friends called Alexis.

For one I was shocked when I moved out west to find out that girls were named Alexis.

But I guess it's the pronunciation part of the name that makes it flip that way. It's very masculine when pronounced in French.
