The thinking is Hutch starts Friday. Babs would start Soup Friday.

I was in favour of that method because the team had a clearly defined starter and backup goalie situation during his time as coach. For the here and now, Campbell/Hutch might be approached differently than Campbell/Mrazek would have been. I like the idea of going for that win in the first game. OTOH, perhaps Campbell could benefit from an extra day of rest considering he's appeared in every game thus far? Either way, both of the upcoming opponents appear to be off to good starts.

Campbell is the Best goalie we have had since Riemer
Not sure if this is a troll post, but if he keeps it up, he’s got a good chance to be the best Leafs goalie since Cujo/Belfour. At the moment Freddy holds that crown (he sucked his last 1.5 seasons with us, but was quite good his first 3), but Campbell is playing better than Freddy ever has, he’ll pass him if he can stay consistent.

Mrazek signing was another Dubas special. Waste of a signing at 3.8. Campbell on the open market will get minimum 5.5 on a 4 year deal if he is not signed by the end of the season. Cal Peterson got 5 per year with the Kings with less starting experience and Campbell put up very comparable numbers when he was also on the Kings. Campbell has been played even better since joining the Leafs.

I think Campbell is a fantastic goalie, but does anyone else think he needs some work on his rebound control? I think he can be considered elite if he improved that area of his game.

I hated Babcock's approach to B2B games because he never weighed the importance of the opponent. Intra-division/conference games are way more important than Western conference ones, of course. This week, it makes sense to have Hutch start vs SJ (on a B2B and 3 in 4 nights) and Campbell vs PIT

I agree with your point about the increased importance of games against teams that are closer to being competition for a playoff spot. Part of me does like the idea of really putting that best foot forward with Campbell in net against a tired SJ team though. We'd also then be the "tired team" against Pittsburgh (even if it's to a lesser extent in comparison to the SJ team we'd be facing the night before) meaning that win could be tougher to come by. I ultimately do expect your approach to win out on this particular B2B.

Hutch is on a bit of a roll, really.

Since we got him:

AHL

18-19 (AHL): 23gms, .910
18-19 (NHL): 5gms, .914
19-20 (AHL): 4gms, .943
19-20 (NHL): 15gms, .886 (plus 1gm, .944 for COL)
20-21 (AHL): 2gms, .975
20-21 (NHL): 8gms, .919
21-22 (PreSeason): 1gms, .929

He did have the one disastrous stretch when we needed him the most- with Freddy and the team floundering under Babcock in 19-20, we needed a backup goalie and he flopped. But even then he went from disgraceful under Babcock (0-4-1, .879) to just bad under Keefe (5-5, .895).

Wouldn't want to count on him as a fulltime backup of course.

Riemer was easily a better Goalie than Freddy (pre-neck injury). Freddy had some moments, but Campbell is playing at a level not seen since Riemer.

Early days but Jack is leading the league in goals saved above expected (might have to click the tweet to see he's above Gibson)

He's so, so good. I am almost always wary of goalie contracts but he's been so consistent since arriving and his age isn't as big a concern for me given how little workload he's had in his career. We have to keep him in the fold.

Reimer has never at any point been a starter. He's had very respectable numbers as a back up and is a goalie that goes on hot runs. He plays a style that is not sustainable or reliable.

Freddy before the last 1.5 yrs was a top 10 goalie in the league and was sustaining a starters workload year after year.

Helllllll no. Freddy’s first 3 seasons with the Leafs were easily better than any 3-year period of Reimer with the Leafs. Reimer was always a 1A/1B type - never exceeded 37 games with the Leafs, never exceeded 44 in any season of his career, was never clearly enough ahead of his tandem partner (of which he had many) to be a legit #1. Freddy was a legit #1, and a pretty strong one at that. He declined a bunch with injury and likely getting off his game mentally, but his first 3 seasons with us he was roughly a top 10 goalie in the league.

Campbell, with the Leafs, is playing better than any Leafs goalie over a similar sized stretch since Cujo/Belfour days. Neither Freddy nor Reimer (nor Bernier) were ever this good. But it is a very small sample size so far - just 39 games so far (32 RS, 7 PO). But if he can keep this up for a few seasons, he’ll easily become the best Leafs goalie since Cujo/Belfour.

This is accurate. Fred is the only goalie to be a true #1 for us for an extended period since Cujo and definitely the best goalie since the Cujo/Eddie era.

I thought Fred was going to top this list as number one, but he lost his way and never found it.

Jack is off to a great start and climbing fast, but he has work to do.

In my totally subjective and personal memory it is:

Cujo
Felix
Fred
Ed
Jack
Reims

Freddy is so underappreciated by our fanbase.

He got closer to a vezina than any goalie we have had in the last 20 years.

Fred finished 4th in vezina voting in a year where he was 10th in sv% amongst starters, and 7th amongst starters with 60+ gms played.

That means he was overappreciated, not under.

To be fair, the poster said our fanbase, and last I checked, we don't vote on the vezina.

It was nice to see the league recognize him though.

Honestly this video
gave me new appreciation for Campbell. I'm big on chemistry and personality and the seems like a great dude with a head on his shoulders that guys will play hard for .

He also had the 2nd most shots against that year though which would indicate he had one of the heaviest workloads. We all know how bad our defense was before last year.

1. Come on zeke you know sv% is half a team stat and half a goalie stat and can’t be used alone to grade a goaltender. The guy with the best sv% doesn’t always win the vezina.

2. Since when did our fanbase vote on the vezina? I didn’t say he is under appreciated by the league.
