Shouldn't a brawl have at least one fight?

I have seen a lot of brawls and that was not a brawl. There was no fighting. A brawl is where all five guys on the ice are fighting.

I guess the Canadian slamming the Norwegian on the ice and hitting him while he was down doesnt count as a traditional hockey fight

Canada and USA are the two "dirty" teams in this tournament if you had to pick 2

Hmm, not happy with only picking 2, I'd like to pick 3, and add Russia to the mix. :D

Canada and Norway have nothing to do with Jack Johnson, back on topic please.

He said Canada was a classy team, and I brought up the 4 Canadian misconducts in the Norway game.

This is entirely on topic.

It's on topic if you mean it fits in with your own agenda of bashing team Canada at every opportunity.

I mean really, going back to the '72 series *LOL*

Maybe that's in keeping with Jack Johnson's definition of class. ;)

Personally, I don't think there is such a thing as a classy team. There are classy players (Francis, Selanne, Bourque, Lidstrom, etc.) and unclassly ones (Avery, Bertuzzi, Niemenen, Chelios, etc.).

I kind of find it hard to categorize any kid as "classy," since that adjective really only comes with age and experience. Jack Johnson isn't a bad kid by any stretch. He's a hard nosed hockey player that let's his emotions get the best of him in an emotional sport. Is he a bad sport? Maybe, although I think plenty of his peers (on all teams) acted a bit childishly in this tournament.

I didn't bring it up, I just replied to it.

...which is what this thread is about :amazed: what a bizzare coincidence!

In my opinion, Jack Johnson is a solid prospect who, in his first WJHC, and perhaps his only WJHC, has played quite well. The hit on Downie has become overblown. The hit was quite dirty, whether Downie himself is a dirty player is quite irrelevant, but Johnson is correct in that he did not really connect with him. If he had really connected with him, Downie would not still be playing in the tournament. I'm not saying that Downie was not hurt in some way, or that the fact Johnson did not connect fully with his head somehow absolves him from blame, but the hit was not nearly as insane as some (including fans in Vancouver) are making it out to be.

It's obvious that Johnson and the USA are going to cheer for Canada over Russia. After last year's semifinal, American players were telling the Canadians to beat Russia because of the taunting, etc. Johnson was not on that USA team, but he surely heard all about it. He says his reasons for cheering for Canada are because Canada plays with class and he has teammates on that team. That sounds pretty legitimate to me. Further, if my team was booed for an entire tournament for basically no reason, I wouldn't be too quick to cheer for Canada either, but he obviously did not let any of that behaviour bother him. That is something that is worthy of note, whether you like the guy or not. Now, whether he is overall a classy individual, I have no idea, but the statement itself was pretty classy in my opinion. Further, anyone who is a good friend of Sidney Crosby's has to be classy as a requirement, no? :sarcasm:

I feel the same way as Johnson, which is why I found myself cheering for the Americans last night. It wasn't as bad as last year when the Russians were openly taunting the US bench after every goal, but I think there are still some hard feeling left over from that game. It's a shame so many of these Russian players lack sportsmanship, because they are very talented. I'll guarantee Sutter wouldn't allow that kind of behaviour on the Canadian team.

That doesn't count as any type of fight. This stuff happens...I think Johnson's more upset with the fact that the Russians put an exclamation point on their wins. I also agree that it's kinda sour grapes on Johnson's part mixed in with a little damage control. If I was an American I'd be a little miffed but I don't think it would really be justified, Canadian fans may be a little irate if we get the same beating but as far as I'm concerned all the kids have exhibited a lot of class. Melees are a minor intrusion on the games but there could have been much worse ones with the level of officiating in this tourney.

That was a classy comment by Johnson? Classy!?

It was the comment of a pathetic loser who just got his behind beaten silly by the russian and he goes whining like a baby.

I dont know if u were watching but it certainly was not a brawl everyone paired up but no one threw any punches. And it was not for no reason either, the Norwegian player took a minor run at Pogge and the Canadian players responded as expected with a minor scuffle. No big deal. But i agree the Canadian team is the most dirty team at the tournament a lot of their hits are late or charges or at the head.

The point I think is that Canada was not showing any malice towards Norway, they were trying to stand up for what they believed was an attack on their goaltender, and it escalated into a melee where misconducts were handed out to both sides. You obviously disagree with the motivation and actions that led to the misconducts, but it still has nothing to do with the subject of this thread which is whether or not Jack Johnson is "classy". Whether Jack Johnson's opinion that Canada is a classy team is correct or not isn't the subject of this thread.

Doesn't count as a fight? What is it then? Christ dude, wake up.

And the Russians put an exclamation point on their wins? Team USA ran the score up on Norway. Neither teams are saints, and getting 5 goals isn't a classless act, its a reasonable score.

The only thing that wasn't right was putting Malkin on the ice with minutes left, I'll give you that. But still, the cheap play by the American's was just begging for trouble.

I never said Russia was classy, just that Canada isn't exactly a team to root for on the basis of "class"

It's a valid sub-topic. Its a thread about what he said in the USA Today article.

A non-Canadian did something bad at the WJCs, it will NEVER be forgotten, definitely not around these parts.

Can you imagine if Malkin actually has the audacity to PUMP HIS FIST tomorrow after scoring a big goal? Man what an unsportsmanlike act that would be.

I hope he points at the Canadian bench again this year. It'll be hilarious and get guys like P-Mac and Cherry all fired up. :biglaugh:
