The sad thing is he's better than Severson. Jarmo made that bed and we have to lie in it.

Rare opinion, I know, but I don't think Provorov has outplayed Severson this year. Severson has been very good most games.

The way I look at it is that the CBJ have only one slot left for a big money/top 4 defenseman. Z and Severson take two of these slots. Mateychuk has a very good chance to be number 3. So the decision would be "do we want/need to commit to Provorov for 7 years at around $7 million/year"?

My answer to my question would be "no". Nothing wrong with kicking the tires and trying to get him to sign a lower money 3 or 4 year deal, but this is going to be his last big contract and it's highly unlikely that he'd bite. I sure wouldn't if I were in his shoes.

Our overall defense isn't at the level where there should be no/little room to obtain another good/large contract dman. Provorov doesn't fit the bill to me to fill the 4th slot. His play this year has been pretty good-but that's a common happening in a "contract year".

The CBJ will be best served by trading him for assets at the TDL, IMO.

I think the big decision on this is how LONG the contract needs to be. If they could get Provo for 3-4 years extended, I would do that in a heartbeat. Would give him one more contract after that to get premium pay and that would be about the time we'd have to actually pay Mateychuk. I personally don't want a 7 year deal with 5 more years of Severson after this one. Now, I guess if they could move on from Severson in another 2-3 years that might be workable. I'm just not sure those pieces are good enough to make us cup contenders.

Probably low. I think he wants it but I doubt Waddell does at the $ he'll ask for

I would assume that's not on the table. No picks before #20 are likely in play - if we're dealing with Utah then we'd be getting a prospect like Duda or a 2nd + 3rd type of trade.

And FWIW I'm fine with those 2nd+3rd type of trades, if that's what we get for Provy then that's fine. Take a couple swings.

Jackets and Provorov​

My understanding is that Columbus Blue Jackets general manager Don Waddell and defenseman Ivan Provorov’s agent, Mark Gandler, had a chat last week and agreed to talk again soon.

The pending unrestricted free agent is very open to signing an extension with Columbus. At least at the outset of these talks, there’s a mutual desire to see if there’s a way to get something done.

But I also think that Provorov, who turned 28 last week, will be seeking a maximum eight-year contract extension. I’m not convinced the Jackets would be comfortable with that, in part because of what they have coming up the pipeline. Provorov is earning $6.75 million this season and obviously will also be looking for a raise given the rising salary cap and his importance on the team. Provorov is second on the team in ice time behind only Norris Trophy contender Zach Werenski.

Which is also why there are several Cup contenders keeping an eye on where this is headed.

If the sides can’t agree to an extension as we get closer to March 7, and if the Jackets get a first-round pick offered for Provorov, I believe they would prioritize the bigger picture and deal him regardless of where they are in the standings and playoff race.

But again, both sides appear to have good intentions as their dialogue begins on a possible extension.

Well, that's the price of unrestricted free agency and the CBA when it comes down to it since no other team can offer an 8 year. Paying him big money when he's 36 is not ideal but how many of these deal signed at this age make it that far with the team that signed him.

If he can help us be cup contenders in the next 4-5 years do it and deal with those 2 years later. Other teams do it all the time. I'm not concerned with a cap hit 5-6 years down the road. I'm more concerned with winning before that time and I think he fits in with what is going on right now.

I buy the logic of what you're saying and I'd support 8 year deals for the right player. But I don't think Provorov is quite good enough to justify it. He's a solid step below that level of player for me.
