Player Discussion Ivan Demidov: Welcome to Montreal

His 1st year got burned the moment he signed it.
I would like explanation on this, as he ended up playing only 2 regular season games and 5 playoff games. My understanding is that the ELC slide threshold is 10 games, and regular season and playoff games are worth the same.

It's the timing of the year that he signed it, or something.. but it was burned the second he signed it.

Because he signed the contract the same calendar year he turns 20 it auto burns.

It is different than if he signed the contract last year for this season. Don't know why but that was the explanation provided in a bunch of articles.

If he signed the deal in 2024 it slides because he turned 19 in 2024. Because it was signed in 2025 he turns 20 this year it does not.

His ELC doesn't slide because he turns 20 before December 31st, 2025. There is no 10-game threshold.

If the Hawks-Jackets deal had gone through last draft, the Hawks would have traded the 3rd overall pick for Demidov, and the Jackets would have been able to draft a center without major injury concerns.

It would've been greatly worth it for both of them.

What was the deal

Hawks offered their 2025 unprotected 1st for CBJ’s 4th overall in 2024. I think they also offered their habs the same deal if I’m not mistaken. Their goal was apparently to walk away with both Levshunov and Demidov.

Thanks god we have Demidov. We are very lucky to grab him at 5 lol!!

This guy will change the forward group 100%, he already make great impact on the 1st PP unit haha!!

So we could have had either Misa, Martone, Hagens instead of Demidov.

No thanks. No one selected 3rd overall would have been worth Demidov this year.

And we would’ve ended up with friggin Cayden Lindstrom

Thankfully we had a guardian angel that day

Got to wait for a few more years to know.

I was higher on Demidov and Iggy more than Lindstrom. Lindstrom skating/size was attractive but I got Q Byfield vibes. Good but not that good. Then add the injury and that was a big red flag for me.

Iggy also got injured but did play 21 games (14 goals and 32 pts). I'm still a big Iggy fan but very happy we landed Demidov. Just didn't think he would be on the board at 5.

Speaking of the draft, could we get a top 5 draft pick by trading away our unprotected first for next year?

I would thing very few unprotected firsts in 2026 will be traded. You never know what can happen and risking a ticket in the Gavin Mckenna lottery could be a career-defining blunder for any GM.

I would take Demidov over any players of this year’s draft.

I would have taken Demidov ahead of any players of his draft not named Celebrini.

Demidov is special. Talent wise, he is ahead of all the players taken in front of him. Demidov would have gone 1st overall during Slaf’s draft. Ahead of Lane Hutson.
