Player Discussion Ivan Demidov: Welcome to Montreal

Somebody should remind MSL that Demidov just played in the playoffs in another pro league. I've always been an MSL supporter, but if Demidov plays 10 min a game in these playoffs, and he starts acting like all the other failed coaches before by relying only on vets, then I'm off the MSL bandwagon.

These playoffs are gravy... they're meant to be a huge learning experience for our young players. Give them experience in important roles.

Caufield had a prominent role in the playoffs right aftet jumping in from college. And it paid off.

Demidov is our wildcard. Play him and reap the rewards. If he fails, it's still a huge learning experience.

Agreed. Demidov has his feet wet. If you want to be a bit conservative game one…sure BUT even then if Demidov forces his hand and hits the ground running…play him.

If we’re down 2…pull Monty. If Savard can’t bring it don’t hesitate to bring Xhekaj back in. Strategic substitutions can change the tide of a series, MSL should know this

There's no chance MSL gives Demidov any ice time. The guy doesn't know how to adapt. He's an ex hockey player who lived through routines.

In april 11th before the game when they asked him about Demi's arrival he got upset and "said im trying to clinch here, i haven't thought about Demidov"
The guy doesn't have the necessary experience to deal with superstars.
Now its his first time experiencing NHL playoffs as a coach, in his mind he's thinking i gotta win the first game.

I wont be surprised if he scratches Demidov at some point

He's thinking he needs to win....no shit he's thinking that lol. What is he supposed to be thinking about?? This isn't rec hockey, YOU PLAY TO WIN THE GAME and he'll put the guys out there that he thinks gives us the best chance to win, not to appease fanboys. We might not like some of his decisions, but he's being paid to make those decisions and we have to live with it.

Come on you guys, this is not fantasy hockey.

Caufield had a prominent role but he was never on the ice late in games protecting leads.

Demidovs ice time will fluctuate depending on whether they need a goal or need to keep a lead. Especially when his line carries Laine.

Demidov's line is bad defensively, so if that line wants to get more ice time, they need to produce offense. Prior to Demidov's arrival, that line wasn't good defensively and wasn't producing much offense, so they weren't getting much ice time. If Demidov can make that line good offensively, then that line should play more than they did the last few weeks.

I think in the future Demidovs spot is beside Slafkovsky and Suzuki. We need to get Caufield on his own line with a good 2C. I think the hope was Dach being that guy, and I still have hope he can, but we can no longer bank on that happening. We need to acquire a stop gap 2C that will age into a top end 3C. Horvat sounds great but the contract is a tough one.

I think a Demidov-Caufield duo would be dynamite. Just put them with a responsible 2-way center. Suzuki can carry his own line.

Next year perhaps...

Just because you want to see the shiny new toy play more doesn’t mean an nhl coach has to agree that it is the best way to win games.

Should we rank them by beauty or is that going too far in 2025??

I'd wait to see which Laine comes out game 1, he usually steps up for big games. He was a stud for Finland at the 4 nations.

But if he comes out flat again, a line with Heineman finishing Demidov's setups looks appealing, with Evans as the defensive presence.

I think he would have if not for the complete lack of back checking on the Chicago goal against the night before. He was having an unreal debut until that moment. That probably had Marty a little hesitant when the playoffs were on the line.

Newhook was also losing every single faceoff and is utterly useless out there. Wasn’t surprised to see the line get limited minutes.
