Good assessment. I’d be tempted to throw a shit ton to anyone selling a C. Like say Elias Petersson. End our drought of missing a top 6, attitude be damned.
Also for a right D, that’s an obvious hole. I don’t care about accumulating a ton of prospects anymore, sorry to say. The big ones we have will be enough for me.
I don't know about Petersson, TBH? But that has more to do with the 11.6M Cap hit, the rumours about a lack of engagement from Petersson and how it would likely take selling the farm to land him.
I guess that management can do their own research before making any offer for Petersson?
What would it take to land Petersson? I doubt that a bunch of draft picks gets it done and I wonder how many years it would set us back in our rebuild to sell the amount of quality assets it would take to land Petersson?
Petersson, alone, and as good as he might be, will not transform the Habs into a Cup winner.
That said, Petersson is a + player every season he has played, except this one where he is currently -3. He is not an offensive player that cheats to create offense. He is a legitimate play driver that keeps the team on the right side of the puck moving forward.
I certainly would love to see a duo of Petersson-Demidov, but Demidov might well be the ask for Petersson, along with Suzuki.
At the very least, Montreal would need to give Suzuki + for Petersson. A value contract to our C +, something like:
Suzuki + CAL 2025 1st round pick + MON 2025 2nd round pick? Would that do the trick?
Or, would Suzuki + Mailloux + CAL 2025 1st round pick do the trick?
Slafkovsky - Petersson - Demidov (off wing)
Caufield (off wing) - Hage - Bear (off wing)
Heineman - Beck - XXX
XXX - XXX - XXX
We are at least three years away from seeing if we really have a 2nd line, under this scenario, and it is a complete waste of time before we start being successful when we are currently in a situation to look to add elements that make us successful in the shorter term.
As an aside, whomever trades for Petersson, at least, truly gets an elite player for the bulk of his peak years and doesn't likely get any years where Petersson is on the decline since his contract runs through his 33rd birthday and not beyond (7 years left after this one).
