We're at the point of the spring/summer of "no Penguins hockey in X weeks" where people are trying to mental gymnastics Bergevin as a legitimate hire, in any capacity. Grim.

At least we can take solace in that whoever gets hired as GM and President won't be winning Cups here the next few years.
So really this hire will be about how entertaining the team will be during the core's twilight years, and how effectively he can start a rebuild, were he to last that long.

I wouldn't hate Botterill... younger guy that has a deep understanding of the cap and isn't turned off by analytics. Yohe paints him as some "hybrid" of old-school/new-school philosophy.

If they want some entertainment from hockey, firing Sullivan is a must lol, nonnegotiable

It makes me nostalgic in some ways. For back in the day when we were trying to rationalize him being a good defenseman for this team.
He was no Ric Jackman or Dick Tarnstrom.

All joking aside, those guys posted relatively silly numbers considering the teams they were on. Jackman had 52pts in 74 games with the Pens and Tarnstrom has 103pts in 174 games. I always find that funny.

I have no idea how to assess Boterill's time in Buffalo. That org was such a clown show. If you look at guys he targets maybe you can sort of get a glimpse of what kind of players he likes, two of his first moves were getting Scott Wilson and Conor Sheary. His big draft picks in Buffalo were Middlestadt, Dahlin, Samuelsson, Cozens - but no gems late round, which I guess doesn't really fall on him. Middlestadt is a bit disappointing, Dahlin was obvious, Cozens was good and Samuelsson was a 2nd rounder.

FSG want someone to enforce their delusion that this team's window is still open.
FSG has owned the Red Sox for 20 years and has 3 championships with them. They've owned Liverpool for 13 years and won it's first top-flight championship in 30 years with the best season in team history in 2020. I don't think we're at the point where we can say they are delusional about how to get the team competitive.

The Krueger hire was an unmitigated disaster. And he was the second highest paid coach in the league!
I forgot he hired that ghoul.

"Competitive" meaning what? Playoffs? Sure, very possible still.
Cups? No. This team is not getting through multiple beasts of the East and the West champion in the Sid era anymore.
If FSG are still owners when we're contenders again after a rebuild, many years down the road, they may win then though.

I don't think even Tulsky or whoever the best candidate is can win it all in the next 2-3 years here. To me it's all just pretending and wasting time that could be spent rebuilding.
Would be thrilled to end up wrong though, of course.
If you're still a believer then I'll respect your optimism.

Larry Brooks thinks the Penguins are going to engage in a bidding war for Hellebuyck this summer. Other teams mentioned were the Devils, Kings, Senators and Sabres.

But, it's Larry Brooks.

Brooks is a garbage writer and interviewer but he's got a good track record with reports. The man's connected.
But if what you're talking about is not what he's hearing and just what his opinion is, then yes it's worthless.

Seems like the latter, considering we don't have a GM yet. You'd think those kind of decisions would be made by him.

You said FSG was being delusional about the state of the franchise. I am saying there is no basis for that claim yet.

They are delusional in terms of what the foundation is here relative to the rest of the league. They think Crosby has a chance at more Cups here.
FSG has a representative who lives in Pittsburgh, Dave Beeston. He watches the games, interacts with the front office on a daily basis, and reports back to his superiors regarding the situation here.
He is 1.5 years into learning about the sport and the NHL. No prior experience.

As such, he doesn't understand that they're toast, from a Cup perspective. He has a sort of a child-like optimism for these next few years. Reality will sink in more for him when they miss/get eliminated next year. He just needs more time.

What exactly are we going to bid with? The 14th pick, Crosby’s 30 year old jock strap, and Jiri Slegr’s turtleneck?

If the Jets are moving Hellebuyck - which they probably are - it'll be because they're looking to strip to the studs and build out....so yeah, the 14OA starts it, followed by whatever futures or fodder sitting in the minors they value. Again, within reason.

Dude would probably love Pittsburgh.

Coming from Winnipeg, just about anywhere is an inprovement. I don’t see any way the Pens could even sniff some of the offers that other teams could make. Buffalo and Detroit are overflowing with young talent and need a goalie to help the team take the next step. Similar for NJ.
